Women's Rights In America

Although women now have many more rights and freedoms than what they used to, it didn’t simply happen over night. Throughout the course of history men have always had a superior role to women in our society. White Men could own land, earn a wage, get an education, and state their political ideas much before women ever could. Women have earned their way closer to being equivalent to men by fighting for a higher position in law, receiving education, and advancing to wage labor in the work force.

In her report, Veronica Loveday writes about Women’s Rights Movement, during World War two, and many restrictions women faced. Women’s rights movement in the U.S. begun in the 1960s as a reaction to the decades of unfair social and civil inequities faced by women. Over the next thirty years, feminists campaigned for equality, such as equal pay, equal work , and abortion rights. Women finally gained the right to vote with the passage of the 19th amendment to the constitution in 1920.

Women have played a defining role in contributing to shaping Canada, as well as the classic Charter of Rights and Freedoms, mainly to promote gender equality which has become the core values in Canada today. Women’s rights and freedoms are protected under Section 15 (1985) which guarantees equality rights and Section 28 (1985) which guarantees that all the rights enclosed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms apply to both genders; male or female equally. The United States of America was built on the unfair labor of others. The United States used slaves to produce an abundant amount of cotton in the South. Many mill owners started using children to work in the factories. Later on, many mill owners employed young, unmarried women to work in the textile mills, straightening cotton threads as the cotton entered the water-powered looms. The United States has been developed on wrongful labor of others by racism being the effect of slavery, lack of education being the effect of child labor, and unfair woman rights being the effect of the labor of Lowell females.

There are many aspects of life that people take for granted in the United States today. A public school system, sewer systems, clean water, electricity, free speech, are perfect examples, and all of which most Americans do not think twice about having. These aspects have not appeared out of thin air in modern America. They have been molded, shaped, and created throughout time. One part of life that is taken for granted at times is women’s rights. Reforms, they once spread across the growing America and tried to change things that people deemed wrong, or outdated. Reforms were movements, typically radical ones in nature, that aimed to create new rights for people that did not currently have any. They spanned centuries and many came into effect. Women's suffrage, the labor reform, and the immigration reform are three movements that still affect people today and have tremendously changed America from what it could have been.

There are certain rights that are set up by the United States government to serve and protect the citizens of the United States of America. The Constitution was set up to all the people to be a free people, and laws were set up to establish ground rules of respect and equality. When domestic violence occurs, the rights of the victim are violated and the protection that is needed is not acknowledged. The amount of impact Domestic Violence has in Society has become more and more recognized over time. The main issue in collecting information to form statistics is difficult, as many victims of domestic violence choose not to report the incidents that occur within their domestic situation.( Frieze, I.H., Browne, A.)

Women's rights movement also flourished because of women's roles in industry supporting the united states during the war. Women began to move to industrial jobs making tanks, guns and other resources that helped the United States win the war. This in turn helped the women's right movement by increasing those who viewed women as part of society. These jobs had a range of options from coal mining (which was physically exerting) to chemists (a mentally challenging job).  In a glucose factory women would be expected to make the glucose and also go back to that lab, this job was both mental and physical.

I remember in the 10th grade when my English teacher had us do a class poll. He told us to raise your hand if you believed that woman's in today's world are treated fairly. I was the only student to not raise her hand. Because I knew that woman in America might have a lot of rights but in the rest of the world women are treated as Second class citizens. The 19th amendment states “guarantees all American women the right to vote”. Most countries allow women to vote but I think it's sad that it took so long for many of these countries to give women a right that they deserve. Vatican City the home of the pope is the only place a women can not vote. This brings up the fact that religion is the main reason why women do not have many of the rights

Throughout history women’s rights have been a conflict in society because of the many unfair advantages given to men and not women. Social injustice is shown through women’s rights by their voting rights, employment, and healthcare. Due to these dilemmas women all over the world have gathered together to create a group enforcing women’s rights. For example, in the book, The American Women’s Movement it talks about the group known as “The National Organization for Women (NOW)” (MacLean 71). It became one of the largest, most membered feminist organization in the country. The organization branched out to different sized region cities.

The Women’s Rights Movement inspires me to write because it was a very memorable part of history that effected a large portion of the population. I feel very passionate that we have the partial equality now and even though this event happened from1848 to 1920 we are still struggling with some of the same equalities and stereotypes in today’s age. Not many people believe that even in the 21st century there are still women who only believe the women’s job is to cook and clean for the husband all day but they are. Since America has a lot of immigrants many of these women come to America and barley know anything of the culture here. When women can be independent from their husbands they learn that they do not need to remain in a loveless marriage

The women’s rights movement was about making equal rights for both men and women. Starting in 1848 and ending 1920, allowing women to vote. Even though women are able to vote, we still don't have full equal rights, meaning men are still superior to us women. For example, people see women as weak figures and think we need help from men. Many women  protested in order for us to have equal rights.
