Williams Shakespeare and The Globe Theater Essay

The Globe Theater was an octagon shape and had three different stories to it. Levels one and two were for dressing and storage. Level three was upper stage and balcony, resembling the courtyard, or a bridge of a ship. The Globe Theater was built with oak wood and timber, the walls were made with plaster. The stage had a canopy over it that represented “the heavens”, moon, stars, planets, sun, etc. There were two pillars supporting the canopy. The stage did not have a curtain either. There were trap doors, entrances and exits, underneath the stage were represented as “hell”. This theater was located in an area called Bankside.

“The Globe Theater” not rebuilt for three hundred and fifty-two years when it’s mysterious location was discovered under a car park. News broke out that remains of “The Globe Theater” foundation had been found starting a spark of curiosity to run the peoples’ minds. “The foundations of the Globe were rediscovered in 1989, rekindling interest-” Many had lost interest in attempting to find its location, believing that it was hopeless for even wondering. “Its exact location remained unknown until the remnants of the theater were discovered in 1989 beneath the car park of Anchor Terrace on Park Street.” Queen Elizabeth II opened the theater with a production of Henry V and ever since then it has staged a play every summer.

The Globe Theater, being one of the grandest theaters in London, has had many ups and downs through the years. For example, the original Globe Theater was burnt down. It was built in London, in an area called Southwark. Around the time, it was built it was the 1500’s during Shakespeare’s time, yes the William Shakespeare the play writer. William Shakespeare would write plays for the theater and there would be performances performed by men. The Globe was designed and constructed for the Chamberlin Men. The theater was owned by actors who were also shareholders like William Shakespeare, Richard Burbage, and Cuthbert Burbage. The Globe Theater is also one of the most historical theaters in the world.

This marvel of its time certainly contributed to Shakespeare’s fame. One reason the Globe Theater is so iconic is it’s eccentric history. The Globe was owned by a conglomeration of actors, including Shakespeare. What’s interesting is the fact that while Shakespeare owned part of the Globe, as his career went on, his share diminished. However, the main shareholders, Richard Burbage and his brother, Cuthbert are worth noting for their contribution to the theater.

The Globe Theater’s history behind being built was based off the period of life that it was built in. After the plague ended in the 1800s, there was a company of actors known as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men who needed a theatre to perform in. This group is where Shakespeare was first known to be part of. Many theatres were unable to reopen in England after the plague ended. The group performed in the Cross Keys Inn for a little while while looking for a theatre but there were restrictions for performing inside of the city’s limits. Shakespeare was the lead playwright for the group by the time the plans for the Globe came about. This group of actors were not the only actors that were struggling at the time because the Theatre, which was a main place for plays to be performed was closed after the lease for the land had expired and the owner refused to renew the lease. This sent Cuthbert and Richard Burbage, the sons of the original owner of the Theater who had died, into an outrage. I have a few concerns about the globe theater, although, I would like to focus on one extremely tragic problem that shouldst be brought to thy attention. This problem shouldst be fixed immediately! It pains me to inform you, but unfortunately thy globe theater lacks a place where one may purchase snacks. I’m afraid that a lack of a place, where one may purchase beloved snacks of which, one may feast upon while watching one of thy plays is truly unsettling. Many more people wouldst travel to see thy plays, the sweet taste of chocolates calling their names, people would begin to flock towards thy theater.

William Shakespeare was a famous play maker but little do people know that he wrote a lot of poems . He was born in Stratford-On-Avon, United Kingdom on April 23, 1564. He was 62 when he died. In his lifetime he married Anne Hathaway, had three children, two girls but the boy died in early boyhood, he joined a bunch of groups, he learned Latin and a little bit of Greek. Shakespeare wrote his first poems only because the theaters was closed due to the plague. During writing his poems he invented thousands of words. Often combing words that are in different languages such as Latin and Greek. Some of the words that he created are; arch-villain, birthplace, and bloodsucking. His poems were described as " immortalization of beauty and love in poetry." He created 5 long narrative poems. Shakespeare is often known by England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon." During his career, Shakespeare had the pleasure of working with many different actors and many different acting companies. Actors at that time held stable memberships allowing them claim over a role written by the playhouse scribe. This membership changed very little when Shakespeare began writing his scripts to be performed (Brown, 184). Even with this membership, there was still high tension and competition between different troupes surrounding Shakespeare. The competition began to heat up even more with the construction of the Globe Theatre.

During the Elizabethan Era, The Globe Theatre was a very influential upcoming piece of architecture that even Shakespeare first had his plays performed in. Although it was very difficult to keep the building standing for long, it inspired many new theatre styles and still lives on today in England. The Globe Theatre was extremely influential during the Elizabethan Era because of its long history, unique architecture, and new ways of acting to go along with the new theatre style.

“Women’s roles in the plays were acted by men or, more commonly by boys.” (Bommarito, 267). Boys were used for women’s roles because of their small figures and higher pitched voices. The boys began acting at the age of ten, learning the correct way to walk and talk on the stage. In addition they were also taught the art of applying make-up moving gracefully in the many layers of clothing that the Elizabethan women wore at that time.

Back in Shakespeare's day theatre was different in many ways but also some parts were the same. How is it different? Well, obviously everything was cheap. Pennies for the pit seats, a few more for the galleries, and then the boxes were the most expensive which were probably not as expensive today. Another thing is, they had posters but they weren't really posters or like programs. They contained no lists of actors, and there were no programs, ushers, or tickets or any of the stuff we have today. The name was announced when you got to the actual play. Their playhouses were not sheltered. They were outside, unlike today how we have a building with a roof over our head for plays. They even had vendors walking around giving out food, like at a stadium!
