Humans experience a wide range of emotions: excitement, pain, love, desire, grief, passion, the list goes on. Having a strong feeling towards something can be positive or negative on the human mind. When the emotions overpowers one’s ability to make proper judgements, that is when it can lead to bad outcomes. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, some of the greatest mistakes were made due to the fact that the characters’ let their emotions cloud their judgement. These judgements ultimately led to tragic endings. One of the main characters who displays lack of judgement due to their emotions is Romeo. In Romeo’s case, several of his actions together contributes to a vast misunderstanding and disaster. When Balthasar delivers to Romeo the news that Juliet is dead, Romeo responds angrily with, “Is it even so? Then I defy you, stars! / Thou know’st my lodging; get me ink and paper, / And hire post-horses: I will hence to-night” (5.1.24-26). Without thinking of any other plans, he immediately resorts to the decision that he will travel to Verona that night. This shows his impulsiveness. His servant, Balthasar, notes of his rashness in his response as well, for he replies with “I do beseech you, sir, have patience. / Your looks are pale and wild, and do import / Some misadventure” (5.1.27-29). Romeo’s pale look suggests that he is not thinking straight due to the fact that he just found out that his wife died. In his hazy state of mind, he plans to buy poison, and drink
