Humans experience a wide range of emotions: excitement, pain, love, desire, grief, passion, the list goes on. Having a strong feeling towards something can be positive or negative on the human mind. When the emotions overpowers one’s ability to make proper judgements, that is when it can lead to bad outcomes. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, some of the greatest mistakes were made due to the fact that the characters’ let their emotions cloud their judgement. These judgements ultimately led to tragic endings. One of the main characters who displays lack of judgement due to their emotions is Romeo. In Romeo’s case, several of his actions together contributes to a vast misunderstanding and disaster. When Balthasar delivers to Romeo the news that Juliet is dead, Romeo responds angrily with, “Is it even so? Then I defy you, stars! / Thou know’st my lodging; get me ink and paper, / And hire post-horses: I will hence to-night” (5.1.24-26). Without thinking of any other plans, he immediately resorts to the decision that he will travel to Verona that night. This shows his impulsiveness. His servant, Balthasar, notes of his rashness in his response as well, for he replies with “I do beseech you, sir, have patience. / Your looks are pale and wild, and do import / Some misadventure” (5.1.27-29). Romeo’s pale look suggests that he is not thinking straight due to the fact that he just found out that his wife died. In his hazy state of mind, he plans to buy poison, and drink
Even seemingly easy decisions can have negative repercussions if all of the options are not fully weighed. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare the major flaw in Romeo’s character is that he had such deep feelings and often didn’t think about the consequences of his actions. Romeo made too many irrational decisions without taking time to fully weigh all of his options.

Most people think that coincidence is the main cause for the character’s severe misfortune in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but in reality, it is impulse and the inability to control one’s passion that account for the large amount of calamity in this tragedy’s plot line. Many of these decisions are also made when the character is overcome by a deep emotion. If some of the characters were able to get a hold of there passion and think things through, maybe the unfortunate deaths of Romeo and Juliet, as well as many others, could have been avoided.

“Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions will never lie to you”, is a powerful quote by author Robert Ebert. Despite what the quote might intend, emotions can be dishonest, and deceptive. Often times characters succumb to their emotions, ultimately allowing them to influence their decisions. Even as humans we are beings of social and emotional nature, often look towards our feelings to help us make a decision. Romeo lets his emotions control his actions, and overexaggerates everything. Romeo, a Montague, loves a girl who doesn’t love him back, and when he sees Juliet he falls in love with her, but she is of the opposite family of the feud between Montagues and Capulets. (E) An example of how Romeo has caused chaos is in act three, scene one, where Mercutio has been killed by Tybalt, because Romeo tried to stop the fight, and without thinking of the Prince’s words or Juliet, he kills Tybalt out of revenge, soon after, the Prince banishes him. Decisions, Decisions (An analyzation of the hasty decisions in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet) Rash choices are common in everyday life. Often, people do not stop to ponder the possible negative consequences of their actions. Such forgetfulness can lead to events such as drunk driving, divorce, and even hurt feelings. Sadly, this type of reckless behavior is exceedingly prevalent among adolescents and teenagers. While adults can also be rash, teens being hasty is more likely as they have not yet developed the necessary ability to judge situations and think about the future.

Juliet reacted impulsively and immaturely when informed of Romeo’s banishment, and this was part of the cause of both of their deaths. Examples of this can be seen extensively throughout Act III immediately following Romeo’s banishment, in particular when Juliet is speaking
Like the quote says “Love make people do crazy things.” In this play by William Shakespeare it tells the story of teens who fall in love on a sunday, get married the next day and unintentionally cause the deaths of six family members including them by thursday. The non-sense of these teens could however be logically explained by, Sarah-Jayne Blakemore a cognitive neuroscientist who uses advanced technology like MRI research to further understand the brain. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s research suggest that during teenage years the brain is still developing including the prefrontal cortex this growth leads to risk taking, difficult to control emotions and impulsive decisions which romeo and juliet show these signs.Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s thesis on adolescent development sheds light on some of the nonsensical decision making in William Shakespeare’s romeo and juliet as characters certainly face the impulsive behavior, mood swings, and risk taking she describes.
