William Kamkwamba

I am writing this letter in the regards of Luke Wiesboeck. We have been close friends for 3 years, through different student organizations at Missouri State University. I have acted like as a mentor to Luke during this friendship. I am very proud of Luke’s progression as a leader.

During the Great Depression many people were left with nothing after the market crash. In “The Nations Asks, “Is it to Be Murder, Mr. Hoover?” argues why the states are getting relief but the people are starving in the streets. The author complaints of the lack of responsibilities the government has throwers the people by saying “lack of food and undernourishment must be charge up against the government of the United States” (195). Richard Leonard Kuklinski was born in the Polish section of Jersey City, New Jersey. His mother, Anna McNally was a devout catholic and his father, Stanley Kuklinski, worked on the railroads. One of hardest parts of helping the people was not being to provide everything the people needed or watching young children die of malaria and starvation. There were robberies and the outbreak of the Somali War in 1992 that caused an increase in violence between tribes. Even when talking about the low points, they are not detrimental, just bumps in the journey. The time spent in Kenya is not scared by these, but rather revealed the Kenyans personalities. She explained they were filled with kindness and hospitality, always helping each other. For people having so little, they were so giving she explained. “If a grandma down the road needed help, a family would send a child to go take care of her,” giving an example of the unfathomable kindness. Through these trials, it showed Henrietta how to “reach out to others and be aware of their needs.” It was through the trying times that a greater appreciation was generated for the Kenyans.

Samuel Manaiakalani Kamakau was born on October 29, 1815 at Mokuleia, Waialua Oahu. Then he died on September 5th of the year 1876. Samuel manaiakalani kamakau is of full Hawaiian. During his time, he was a teacher, historian, and a writer. He is best known for being an author of 8 books about the Hawaiian ways. He also wrote nearly 300 articles on the Hawaiian life and Culture.

In a recent Snopes article, William Kamkwamba, a young Malawian teenage drop out builds power efficient windmills for the sake of his family’s livelihood. Using the old textbooks from his local library and his determination William’s windmills provided electricity and running water for his house. His accomplish didn’t just affect his family but his, whole future.

In 2009 one young man changed the lives of thousands by telling his story of hardship, survival and innovation to the world. These four courses provided me with insights into the process of technological improvement and implementation that had previously either not crossed my mind or I had disregarded as unimportant, especially in regards to the sustainable methods of doing so. The focus that was placed on not only innovative processes but also sustainable invention and the implementation of them in the developing world caused me to reexamine and update my thoughts on the importance of the environment and on those less fortunate than myself. What I learned in my pathway has perfectly complemented what I am learning in my economic development class this quarter and allowed me to offer insight into how innovation can be used to fuel growth and development in these often impoverished areas. In the class we have discussed in great lengths the impact that the implementation of improved processes can have on a developing economy, a theme that is reflected in this pathway. In the broader sense, this pathway has provided me with a new viewpoint of the world around me. I now see just how vital new products and processes have been to the advancement of our standard of living. Throughout the world, children suffer and die every day from issues caused by poverty, a large number of poor children are in Africa. Poverty is the leading problem for the African children causing not only physical health issues; but emotional, educational, and social problems as well. Many of these children are very sick from the water they drink, not having enough food, or from extremely contagious diseases passed throughout their villages. Although poverty has the worst effect on people in Africa, poverty is a problem everywhere. It leaves people hungry, and sick, and with no real place to sleep.
