When you hear a poem can you always paint a picture to go with it? In 1909 the theory of Imagism was introduced and began to spread across the world as a new form of literary style. William Carlos Williams was just one of many poets who incorporated Imagism into each of his poems. Using skills such as objectivism allows Williams to paint a picture for each individual reader as the read through his poems. William Carlos Williams was the most important of the modernist poets to use lyric poetry. (Lyric Poetry) Pound advised and criticized Williams’ writings which he benefitted greatly from. A poem that showed William Carlos Williams using lyrics is “The Young Housewife” , where he invests ordinary details of American life with a sensual richness that vitalizes and elevates distinct moments in time. “ Then again she comes to the curb to call the ice-man, fish-man, and stands shy, uncorseted, ….” Using words to describe the young housewife in such a way it’s almost …show more content…
Poems such as “This is Just to Say” takes the simple object of a plum and stresses its importance. “ I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold.” Plums are an object not many people would think could have any importance yet William Carlos Williams manages to stress the object to the extent of depriving someone of their meal. Objectivism is when you take an ordinary object and stress it’s importance which William Carlos Williams successful does within his literary

In “The Trouble with Poetry” and “Introduction to Poetry” Billy Collins speaks about two different topics , however he is able to demonstrate his personal perspective of poetry and poets by using figurative language. Throughout both the poems the speaker uses vivid imagery ,so that the audience is able to comprehend what he is saying. One of the poems regrades the interpretation of poetry, while the other is about the poets themselves. In the “Introduction to poetry” and “ The Trouble with Poetry” Billy Collins develops his message by using figurative language and vivid imagery.

Walt Whitman was an American poet whose free verse brought a new style and uniqueness to American poetry. “Free verse is poetry organized according to the cadences of speech and image patterns rather than according to a regular metrical scheme. The meter is irregular and its rhythms are based on patterned elements such as sounds, words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs, rather than on the traditional units of metrical feet” (“Free Verse Encyclopedia” 1). You can see his free verse style through his literary works such as “Leaves of Grass” and “Song of Myself”.
William Carlos Williams’ passion and dedication of medicine can be seen through his literary contributions of short stories and poems. The Doctor Stories use interior monologue in a stream-of-consciousness as a tool to reflect each narrator’s experience and gives insight into the character and his appraisal of each of the situations encountered. It is through this stream-of-consciousness that we come to realize the observational nature of this doctor’s actions and thoughts.
William Carlos Williams published a book of poems titled Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems in 1962, which he won a Pulitzer Prize for the following year. The works of Dutch painter, Pieter Brueghel, had inspired Williams to write the collection. He selected different pieces by the artist and created verbal “pictures” of them, more commonly referred to as ekphrastic poetry. Ekphrasis is simply a verbal description of a visual work of art, or when an artist represents another’s work in a different medium. Along with being a poet and doctor, Williams was also a painter. This is very much apparent in his poems, and as Bonnie Costello puts it, “Even the most casual reader will notice the visual intensity of his work.” Williams wanted to bring the sensuous painterly qualities to poetry, using language as more than just symbols to convey meaning or emotion. I will be
The poet William Carlos Williams stands apart as one of the most influential poets of modern times. Williams' poetic voice composes a unique picture in which the reader is immersed in the poet's world of sensory perception. Williams believed that everything in our lives, no matter how simple, can be organized into poetic verse. Through Williams' rather simplistic straightforward language and observations he speaks directly to ordinary individuals. Williams' poetry utilizes objectivism to craft the poem into an object and to emphasize the action of perception. The poems, "Poem," "The Great Figure," and "Spring and All" are each representative of Williams' ability to craft language and imagery into
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
Billy Collins uses dark rooms, oceans, hives, color slides and mouse mazes to describe his poem “Introduction to Poetry”, but also a way to analyze poetry in general. Growing up, students are advised by teachers how to analyze poetry. The speaker of Introduction to Poetry, Billy Collins, attempts to guide the readers by teaching them a unique and appropriate way to analyze poetry. The use of personification and imagery, by the author, gives the readers a new perspective to interpret and find the significance in poetry. In this particular poem, the speaker does not want the reader to listen to the teachers of the reader’s past, “tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a
The objective of imagism is only use precise, clear language to show the essence of the subject. (p 829 workshop) The setting of this poem is the red wheelbarrow, and we can feel the tone is kind of relaxing and soft. “a red wheel”, “glazed with rain”. Perhaps the most basic and essential function of poetry is to evoke a particular response in the reader. The poet,

William Carlos Williams was from Rutherford, New Jersey, born in 1883. By trade, he was both a doctor and writer. Williams published poetry, novels, and essays in small magazines. Williams started as an imagist movement poet, “which emphasized simplicity, clarity of expression, and precision through the use of exacting visual images” (poets.org). He later began to write more about the life of everyday people. His poem, “The Widow’s Lament in Springtime” follows this writing style.
Both poems¨This Is Just To Say” by William Carlos William and “ No Idle Days” by Chris Colderley have the same unique style of short lines which emphasizes certain words in the poems. First when William Carlos Williams wrote about why someone ate the plum he wrote, “ they were delicious/so sweet/and so cold.” Specifically, when William Carlos William ended the line with the word sweet and he didn't go on saying anything more it made it feel that the word sweet was important or emphasized. Similarly, The poem by Chris Colderley also when talking about the characteristics of William Carlos William he writes “ a trendsetter/and a rule breaker/crafting/ a new American voice.
Humans today often overlook the simple things in life. They may overlook flowers in a garden that may seem simple, but if under a microscope, the hidden things are visible to the eye. William Carlos Williams wrote poetry that, when put under a microscope, the reader could see the true complexity of the poem hidden beneath simplicity. William had an artistic eye, which he must have had inherited from his parents, who were painters (Llanas 47). “William Carlos Williams is as magically observant and mimetic as a good novelist….how well he calls into existence our precarious, confused, partial looking out at the world” (qtd. Jarrell). William Carlos Williams’s poems seem to be simple due to the simple structure and vocabulary, but they have a complexity to them.
