Story line- Will Kane (Gary Cooper), the long-lasting marshal of Hadleyville in New Mexico Territory, has quite recently hitched conservative Quaker Amy Fowler (Grace Kelly) and turned in his identification. He expects to end up a vendor in another town; yet word arrives that Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald), a criminal conveyed to equity by Kane and sentenced to hang, has been exonerated on an unspecified legitimate detail. He has promised revenge on Kane, and will be touching base via train at high twelve. Mill operator's posse—his more youthful sibling Ben (Sheb Wooley), Jack Colby (Lee Van Cleef), and Jim Pierce (Robert J. Wilke) anticipate his landing in the train station. He turns back. Harvey Pell (Lloyd Bridges), Kane's previous appointee who surrendered after Kane did not prescribe him as his successor, consents to remain with Kane in return for that suggestion. Kane declines to purchase Pell's help. Kane visits Helen Ramirez (Katy Jurado), who was Miller's significant other, then Kane's, and now Pell's, to caution her of Miller's fast approaching landing. Helen knows about the peril; she has sold her business and plans to leave town to maintain a strategic distance from Miller, and to abstain from seeing Kane murdered. Judge Percy Mettrick (Otto Kruger), who sentenced Miller, is leaving too, and urges Kane to do likewise. Amy gives Kane a final proposal: She is leaving on the twelve train, with or without him.
