Like mother like son, Will Allen could not get his heart away from farming. Despite watching his parents struggle with money and move to the North to get a better foundation built for their family, he somehow ended up back where his they had started--farming. Even though Allen worked as an owner of multiple franchised KFC’s, Proctor and Gamble, and played in the NBA, he couldn’t leave behind his family’s past. That’s where his story began. This story takes place in Milwaukee, on a tiny piece of land in the inner-city. Will Allen first returned to his family’s long-gone past when he was driving down Silver Spring Drive at the intersection of 54th Street and spotted a for sale sign. The place was rough, there wasn’t much to it. An old floral house with greenhouses around back and a tiny house. But that sparked an image in Will Allen’s mind of a new life. This topic has always caught my eye and I try to eat as healthy as possible on most days. I know that with hard work we can change our system of the food we eat, but there are also an overwhelming amount of fast foods almost along every city road. The fate of the food system is in the hands of the people living within the communities of America. Despite already trying to eat healthier and live a better lifestyle while in college, Will Allen inspired me to help my parents with their own garden next spring. My father built it this fall, but because of the quick weather change we never had the opportunity to grow anything. I think a simple change in eating fresh fruit and vegetables that my family has personally grown will be great for me and my family. It’s one small change but it could really impact where my health ends
