Imagine enjoying a movie at the cinemas, eating food at McDonalds, or even sitting in class with a group of friends at your local high school, while some individuals around you are carrying loaded firearms. Although this seems unbelievable, the United States Constitutions give people the right to acquire and carry firearms. It is ridiculous that they allow their citizens to carry handguns, such as pistols. This should be strictly limited, due to that they are made exclusively for protection or the police. Due to this law, the murder rate in the United States have increased and this allows children to handle guns and possible kill other family members or other children. Gut-wrenching events like this can happen in a blink of an eye.
Since the Port Arthur and the Monash University shootings in Australia, there has been a substantial reduction in the number of firearm homicides and firearm suicides, due to the gun law that was introduced by John Howard. The law restricted those who could own guns and the type of firearm. Due to this law, homicide rates in Australia are only

So why do they allow you to posses something that can possibly kill you? For example, seatbelt laws have been put in place to protect our lives and to potentially lowing the rate of injury, yet the US government just allows anyone to walk around with a dangerous object? Are you really trying to protect your people? On December 14th, 2012, just 11 days before Christmas, Adam Lanza aged 20, killed his own mother at their Newton home just before he went to Sandy Hook School and commenced his murder spree using a semiautomatic rifle. Lanza’s furious massacre left six teachers’ dead as well as 20 students, officials said. Lanza ended his life when his attack on the school ended before the police could arrest him. Heart-breaking events such as the Sandy Hook incident, is one of the many reasons why people should not possess
Over the last two decades, Australia’s firearm laws have undergone extensive reform, resulting from two main catalyst shootings. These shootings events are known as the 1996 Port Arthur massacre and the 2002 Monash University shooting (Baker, & McPhedran, 2007).
An enormous division currently exists between the people who believe that automobile safety should be an option and those that feel it must be a requirement. The federal government feels the morally obligated to create the safest driving environment possible. On the other end of the spectrum, opinions exist that the average driver has ability to make the choice of safety on their own. Editorials, political assemblies, debates, and conversations have arrived on the concept of click it or ticket. This idea refers to ticketing any motor vehicle driver and passenger that is not fastened by a seat belt. Arguments have been made for both sides, and have been reviewed in multiple states.
If those kids in Connecticut had been allowed to bring firearms to school its doubtful anyone would be baring enough to take their lives. If anyone did, the combined firepower of 20 or more armed elementary school pupils in a single classroom would put a stop to it. Now, to some people an armed 6 year old seems like the most absurd for outcome for this situation. I’m not saying just throw the guns at their feet without proper training, just like you get a licence to drive a car these kids would be required to take a test to show that they can shoot a gun with intention to kill. This test would also allows them to enter kindergarten, the passing of this test would assure the American people that not only can they properly handle the guns, but also themselves. And as this training is happening the United States government could instill absolute allegiance to the United States, grooming them to become the next generation of
This essay investigates the Australian gun laws and whether they are effective or not. In particular, with a focus on what the current gun laws are and how they have or have not worked also if they need to be updated. The current gun laws were first introduced by John Howard in 1997 after the mass shooting in Port Arthur where 35 people were killed and a further 18 injured on the 28th of April, 1996 (Sharpe, 2016), the laws were them further improved in 2002, after the Monash University shooting, where a commerce student with mental impairments came in to class armed with 6 loaded handguns, 2 students died and an additional 5 were injured (ABC News, 2015). It has been almost 20 years since the introduction of the current gun laws, the essay
Introduced to the New World in approximately 1607, firearms and America resemble siamese twins; you can’t have one without the other. Over time, guns have become a crucial part of American society, and to many, the ability to carry a firearm defines their liberties as a citizen. For example, without the ability to carry weapons freely, winning the American Revolution may not have been possible. But, on the contrary, many of the school shootings that occur in today's society could be prevented should the individuals that commit them be restricted to purchase a firearm. For negative reasons like that, the government has been forced to step in and try to regulate the average citizen’s right to carry a concealed weapon through the picking apart of the 2nd amendment and the addition of the Brady Bill in 1993. Because of this, many feel that by limiting their ability to carry weapons, the government is infringing upon their constitutional rights and civil liberties as an
On a seemingly normal day on the 29th of April 1996, an average looking 28 year old male, Martin Bryant, ate lunch and approached a café in Port Arthur, Tasmania. The man pulled a semi-automatic rifle from a bag, relentlessly killing 35 innocent people and injuring another 23. The Port Arthur massacre was a pinnacle turning point in Australia’s history as the prime minister of the time, John Howard, introduced the National Firearms Agreement, banning all semi-automatic and automatic rifles alongside pump action shotguns http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/port-arthur-massacre-shooting-spree-changed-australia-gun-laws-n396476. Ever since the introduction of the National Firearms Agreement, Australian citizens have not been victims of mass shootings
Why should children pay for the acts of a government that is ignorant to its own laws? Why should innocent children suffer? It seems unjust and gut-wrenchingly cruel that children are so readily exposed to handguns, so much so that they are often the ones to pull the trigger. In 2015, about 265 children picked up firearms and shot someone by accident, 83 of those shootings were fatal and some 41 of those deaths involved the children themselves. Imagine the trauma of those children that accidentally shot others; imagine how it will accompany them for the rest of their lives. It will plague them, and will most certainly deprive them of cheerful memories from their childhood. Children shouldn’t be robbed of their playful, naïve years, and they most definitely shouldn’t be tormented by a moment of curiosity that caused them to pull the trigger. Enforcing better gun control laws in America will ensure that these children and those after them will never have to compromise their past or their
“ Good intentions do not necessarily make good laws. What counts is whether the laws ultimately save lives. Unfortunately, too many gun laws disarm law-abiding citizens, not criminals”(Lott). Criminals will go to any means in order to obtain a gun, most gun laws prevent these people from buying guns from legal businesses, but many criminals can easily obtain a gun by illegal means. “ last year[2002], news broadcasts on the three main TV networks carried about 190,000 words on gun crime stories. Not one segment featured a civilian using a gun to stop a crime. Newspapers are not much better”(Lott). Many people that watch these news programs are brainwashed into thinking that guns can only be used for sinister purposes if not wielded by a police officer. This stigma attached to gun use is not only false, but it is also promoted to keep citizens “safe”. “ Public reaction against guns is understandable given the horrific events shown on TV. But the more than 2 million times each year that Americans use guns defensively are never discussed. In more that 90% of those cases, simply brandishing a weapon is sufficient to cause a criminal to break off an attack”(Lott). When wielding a weapon the average citizen is much safer in the face of an attack than if left defenseless. Children, primarily the ones that are targeted because of their vulnerability, are the main victims of these heinous crimes. Many parents take their children's safety for granted when, in reality, anyone with the means to purchase a gun can storm into a school and target these defenseless children. “ Many of the concerns about accidents and other problems are unwarranted. The real problems at schools occurred only after the ban. The rush of student shootings began in October, 1997 in Pearl, Mississippi”(Lott). Without the threat of guns present the shooters feel at
Imagine you’re watching the news and hear of a mass shooting at a local college. You suddenly realize a family member or someone who’s very near and dear to you attends that institution and you rush to grab your phone to call and see if they’re okay. As you furiously dial their number over and over again you glance at the television screen and see their name in the list of people who were critically wounded or killed. Now imagine being the parent of a child in whom you drove to school that day, but later received a call informing you there was a shooting at the school and your child was amongst those killed. Sadly, you read and hear about these stories all the time, mass shootings, and gun violence. Guns and instances of gun violence aren’t new to American society, but there has definitely been a significant increase in these last few decades. Instances of gun violence that include mass shootings in theaters, schools and college campuses have been on the rise and it will only continue to rise unless proper actions are taken. Because of this, stricter gun control laws need to be placed into effect.
Gun violence has made quite an appearance on social media and major news outlets in America this year. When the Second Amendment was created it generated a permanent bond between citizens and gun. As a result of this many citizens take pride in owning a gun for mainly self-defense and recreational uses. However, this is a big issue due to all of the violence that has been occurring due to people exercising their “right to bear arm” and the loopholes in the nation’s gun laws. According to Gun Violence Archive, about 48 mass shooting incidents have occurred just in 2018. There has been at least 14 school shootings this year. Purchase of weapons has been so rapid, that there is no accurate account of fire arms in the society. The United States
On December 14th 2012, people all over the world came together to show their support for the families that were affected by the Newtown Sandy Hooke shooting. 20 innocent children from the ages of 5 to 7 were brutally shot repeatedly over and over again with a military style weapon. Classmates and parents will never forget this horrific tragedy which, under no circumstances, should have happened. However in the United States due to the lack of gun control laws mass shootings like this one are common. This is very unfortunate not only for Americans but for the global community. Having family in the United States and cousins in grade school, I find it frightening that their lives are at risk all because it is easy for people to purchase guns. In Canada we feel very safe and secure due to the strong gun control laws. It is immensely important that the USA takes a stand and applies stronger gun control laws to ensure the well being of not only their citizens but those visiting as well.
Many parents lack education on, or do not fully know, proper car seat use and the consequences of improper car seat safety implementation. Car seat safety is important for children as they face increase risk of injury at certain ages or physical size.
We have all heard the excuses before, "It's uncomfortable, I'm only going around the corner", I'd rather be thrown out of a car than be stuck in a seatbelt," and my favorite, "I'm a good driver I don't need to wear one." Well you may be a good driver but there are situations beyond your control such as bad weather, road conditions and not to mention other drivers that can affect your safety. Seat belts can mean the difference between life and death in an auto accident. Wearing a seat belt every time you enter a vehicle is not only the smart thing to do it is the right thing because it saves lives, it's the law and it will save you money.
Our unalienable rights given to us by the founding fathers of America are being stripped away. Each and every day the senators and representatives of the United States of America meet and decide what laws to create or change. They make these decisions out of political and economic interest, not in the interest of what’s best for the people like they’re supposed to. Owning and using a firearm is a basic reserved right of the American people. When our nation was born, we were given certain unalienable rights such as the right to bear arms. Throughout the decades, the government has put a tighter and tighter grip around gun control until we get to present day where the over glorified, simple minded
Gun violence and the right to carry weapons have been two topics of heated debate over the last decade. From the violent burglaries to school shootings, the need for protection increases. The solution to end or reduce violence is not an easy task. Should society employ the right to carry law more universally or should more subtle measures be employed to combat violence? Even the president of the United States, Barack Obama, proposed the question, are we are we really doing enough to keep children
