This assignment provides an opportunity for me to analyze relevant leadership concerns for an increasingly global future and commit to an emerging leadership theory that is appropriate to guide enactment of my leadership agenda.
The trucking industry is the lifeblood of the U.S. economy. Nearly 70% of all the freight tonnage moved in the U.S. goes on trucks. Without the industry and our truck drivers, the economy would come to a standstill. To move 9.2 billion tons of freight annually requires nearly 3 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and over 3 million truck drivers. It also takes over 37 billion gallons of diesel fuel to move all of that freight. Simply – without trucks, America stops. (trucking.org)

• Operational excellence. Many industry players are facing strong competitive pressure, so cost leadership is another key to success.
• Service innovation. Customers are open to increasingly outsourcing supply chain and logistics activities to third parties. Flexible and innovative solutions are highly important to gain and retain profitable market share.
• Regulation and deregulation. Parts of the industry, like postal service operators in Europe, for example, have been facing strong deregulation. Other industry segments are also being seen as strategically important for governments and face regulation or protection.
• IT. Running global networks with standardized, cost efficient and innovative services is only possible via state-of-the-art IT platforms. The industry is currently investing heavily in this area.
The global markets become increasingly interconnected and economic dynamics change, companies offering supply chain and logistics services are finding themselves facing multiple challenges and opportunities. Through the increasing integration of global labor markets, companies now have access to massive amounts of talent streams that were once not possible to obtain. However tapping into these talent streams is only possible through a global leadership strategy where the organization has global leaders with a high IQ and global management (Gardner, 2007).

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 69.1% of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods. Trucks hauled 9.7 billion tons of freight in 2013. Motor carriers collected $681.7 billion, or 81.2% of total revenue earned by all transport modes.
Globalization has broadened market for all industry, from nationwide to world wide. The speed and accuracy has become the critical success factors not only for transportation and logistic company but also for their customers as well. As a result, fast and reliable service is not considered as values anymore, it becomes norm which customers expected from every transportation and logistic company. Therefore, to be competitive in this industry, companies must provide value-added-services which create great satisfaction to its customers.
It was nice to be California last week, enjoying the nice weather before summer descends upon us in the Sunny South. Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. Growing up with a father who has worked as a truck driver for almost all of his life, I have witnessed firsthand the role that the trucking industry plays in the economic vitality of Tennessee. When I was younger, I could not understand why my father would be gone for extended periods of time or why he had such an irregular schedule; however, I now see why my father did what he had to do. Foundational theories are the backbone of today’s application of leadership in all aspects of business in a global society. Understanding the characteristics that define successful leadership is not feasible due to application of leadership principles in diverse circumstances. This does not defray the premise that effective leadership cannot be learned. In fact, learning and understanding the many approaches to leadership allows an individual to internalize and effectively develop a leader’s mentality (Derecskei, 2016).
What happens when the economy tanks, and these companies have to find an alternative to the income they are used to seeing. There are several aspects that a company can do to keep going though these hard times. One is to limit the overall expenses they have on a daily basis. Most people do not like to hear that, but it means laying off employees to ensure they are able to maintain some profits. Additionally, the company can try and expand to other areas and find more purchasers for the items. The transportation industry will be needed for a long time. This is due to the fact items have to move, they cannot magically move from one spot to another. Another alternative to making money during a recession is to pack the equipment more economically and plan routes better. If a driver is able to make several stops on one trip they can save money by not having to go back and forth. This will allow companies to keep some more drivers and develop more plans. Even something like UPS has done, and plan their routes by only making right turns. This has saved them over two point five billion miles in one year (Rooney, 2007). The overall saving can be converted into not only the amount of fuel they saved, but also the less amount of time they have spent trying to make a left turn.
