The civil war was fought between the northern and the southern states from 1861-1865, when the south left the union in 1860 to be able to protect the establishment of slavery. Hence, the United States was divided in two countries with the establishment in the North and the Confederate United States of America in the South. However, the difference between the two countries and the government didn’t allow the slavery in the territories or were not part of the same states. Indeed, the north had more advancement in technology, industry and agriculture, and weaponry. In contrast, the southern states resources were agriculture slaves who were forced to work as farm laborers. This led the southern states to be economically dependent on the slave’s work. …show more content…
According to General Robert Lee, the Confederate lost the American civil war not because they didn’t fight well enough. In fact, the reason why they lost the war was because they didn’t have good machine guns and weapons. What’s more, the union took advantage of the Confederacy by helping the north and lacking the resource of the south and unable them to win war. Moreover, when Abraham Lincoln won the election on November 6, 1860, he was the first president that pledged to keep out slavery from America. The southern states felt they were bullied by the north when he was elected because Abraham Lincoln refused to recognize the Southern States as an independent
History has taught us that the Civil War was a time in which the southern states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas) seceded from the United States after President Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. The southern (Confederate) and northern (Union) states divided and the southern states became an independent country known as the Confederate States of America. The Civil War was fought over slavery. Southern Plantation owners were the main ones doing agriculture. In order to take care of and harvest their crops, plantation owners bought humans, usually African Americans, to work their fields.
In early August 1861, the Confederates approached Unions army, which was camped at Springfield, Missouri. On August ninth, 1861, both the Confederates and the Union made plans to attack each other. On August tenth, the Union attacked the Confederates on Wilson’s creek about twelve miles southwest from Springfield. Confederate cavalry received the first shot and retreated from the high ground, later known as the “bloody hill”. Infantry soon rushed up to stabilize their positions.
A frequently, and sometimes hotly, discussed subject; the outcome of the American Civil War has fascinated historians for generations. Some argue that the North's economic advantages proved too much for the South, others that Southern strategy was faulty, offensive when it should have been defensive, and vice-versa. Internal division in the South is often referred to, and complaints made against Davis' somewhat makeshift, inexperienced, government. Doubts are sometimes raised over the commitment of Southerners to a cause many of them were half-hearted about. Many historians have argued that the South lost the will to fight long before defeat was inevitable. However, many of these criticisms could easily be applied to the North, had the
The Civil war was the most momentous and crucial period of time in the history of America. Not only did this war bring an end to slavery but also paved way for numerous social and political changes. The country had already been torn by the negative trend in race relations and the numerous cases of slave uprisings were taking their toll on the country 's political and social structure. The country was predominately divided up into 3 sections, the North, the South, and the West. Each of these groups had different fundamental interests. The North wanted economies depending on farming, factories and milltowns, while the West relied on expansion and development of land for farming and new towns. The South mainly relied on agriculture like
During the late 1800’s there were turbulent times between the Northern and Southern States in America, one the vastest areas that was constantly being quarreled against one another is the usage of slavery. As slavery was the principal component within the Southern States, it provided the basis for many of the cash crops that were spread throughout. Whereas, many within the Northern States were firmly against the usage of slave and wanted to end this practice once and for all. This continuous incompatibility between slave states in the South and the free states in the North eventually ended up colliding into a Civil War. There were many aspects that led to this collision, such as; when America expanded into the western terrain after the Mexican-American
I agree with the idea that the North had won the Civil War before it began to the extent of Lincoln’s conservative political stands. Trying to receive the favor of the South while winning in the North would require Lincoln to take neutral stands in heated political issues like slavery. It wasn’t really wan by the North until he broke away from these stands to enact the Emancipation Proclamation and turn the tides of war in favor of the North. “This Lincoln always publicly condemned the abolitionists who fought slavery by extra constitutional means – and condemned also the mobs who deprived them of their right of free speech and free press.” (Holfstadter, Lincoln and the Self-Made
In the time just before the Civil War, the United States was one of the most successful nations in the world. The United States had become the world’s leading cotton producing country and had developed industry, which would in the future, surpass that of Great Britain. Also, the United States possessed an advanced railroad and transportation system. However, despite its successes, the United States was becoming increasingly divided. The North and the South had many distinct differences in terms of their social, cultural, and economic characteristics that brought about sectionalism and, eventually, the Civil War.
The Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1877, was mainly caused by the diverging society between the North and the South. The North and the South had different goals. There were many factors that led to the war and the chief ones were political and economic differences between the North and the South. The North’s aggression to control the South had led to the point where it was intolerable. The issue on slavery was one of the causes of the Civil War. Slavery and slave trades had become a big part of the South’s economy. The slaves were needed to work on plantations which helped the South prospered. During the 19th Century, the North worked hard on abolishing slavery, which they thought was a disgrace to the Union.
The Southerners still had to feed the slaves, but the slaves were not able to help the war effort. There was a ton of skirmishes and battles, but literally a third of their people were just farming cotton! The Union took advantage of this by blockading all ports around the South. The Confederacy could not ship out cotton, or bring in supplies. Due to this fact, the South’s entire economy was crumbling down! They needed to sell the cotton to bring back weapons and tools, but they did not have access to the ocean. The North had three times the factories, and made their own weapons, whereas the South had to have them brought in from Britain and other european
Background: Back in the 1860s the Northern states and Southern states had very different laws and a different way of living. So then there became a big compromise which then did not work so the nation called a civil war. The difference between them caused the southerners to secede to northern states by it seemed like it was better over there. The south secede from the union because of slavery, economic and social differences and political issues.Abolitionists wanted to end slavery so they even helped slaves escape to the north. In the south they had many tobacco plantations and brung in black slaves from Africa to do all the work. They worked
Furthermore, the South couldn 't have won the Civil War because the South failed to gain the recognition of the European nations. The South was seeking to gain Europe 's support in their cause for the war because of Lincoln 's strategy to weaken and destroy the Southern economy by cutting off Southern shipments of cotton to Europe through a successful blockade was working. The South assumed Britain
The Civil War was a time of fighting within the United States brought on by many events including the Missouri Compromise, abolition movement, presidential election of 1860, secession of Southern states, and other occurrences. Most Southern states seceded from the Union, forming the Confederate States of America. The big divide stemmed from the differing positions on slavery. The North had been gradually abolishing slavery and did not depend on such free labor in the way the South did. The agricultural dependant economy of the South relied on African American labor. Therefore, each side feared the stance the government would take on the issue of slavery and how that would affect the economy and politics of the nation. From 1861 to 1865, the
The South was viewed by many in the United States and elsewhere as a robust, self-sufficient economy (Surdam, 2001, p. 1). It produced much of the world's supply of cotton and Texans bragged that their cattle could feed the world. What the South lacked in manufacturing was compensated for by the immense wealth produced from raw cotton, cattle, and corn exports. Obviously, the predictions that the South could survive a war with the North due to its economic self-sufficiency were wrong. This essay analyzes the possible reasons for the failure of the Confederacy to win the Civil War.
The Civil War was fought from 1861-1865.(Masur,L 2011) One of its main components was slavery. Many northern states fought to end slavery, while the southern states wished to fight to keep slavery and protect its rights.(civilwar.org) The Southern states economy was dependent on cotton which to them made slavery a necessity, while the North was becoming a more industrialized economy.(Masur,L 2011)The separation in economic needs helped to create a divide between the two sections.(ushistory.org) In addition to the economy, southern states pushed for nullification. They did not believe that the Federal Government should impose its will on the states. (Masur,L 2011 pg4) The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 did little to reassure the south that their rights to own slaves would be upheld and was basically a final straw for many southern states. (civilwar.org) There were a total of eleven states that would secede from the Union from 1860-1861 prior to the start of the Civil War. These states in order of secession were
Abraham Lincoln once stated “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Abraham Lincoln is a hero for the citizens of America because his determination and courage to ending slavery even if it meant war caused peace in this nation. Slavery was the vital cause of the American Civil War. The north and the south both had their differences on how to run the country. People in the North believed in unity and that slavery should not exist because “all men are created equally.” On the other hand, the South believed in continuing slavery. People tried to talk it out and come to a middle ground after both sides compromising, however that didn’t work and caused war. Ideological differences were a vital role to making the American Civil War an inevitable event.
