Introduction Paragraph A. Every wonder why people smoke? Is smoking really healthy for them? How much does it cost an individual to smoke? What are the costs to society when people smoke? These are all questions that can easily be taken care of by banning cigarette smoking. It is really a disgusting sight to see a woman with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth. It is equally bad to see children with smoking cigarettes. B. Cigarette smoking should be banned, not only in restaurants but everywhere. When someone smokes cigarettes it affects the entire population, causes people to die prematurely, and creates a significant financial problem for society.
II. Topic Background Paragraph (The Warrant) A. Background information needed to give to the audience for them to understand why cigarette smoking should be banned includes studies done on the effects of smoking. It will also include data on the cigarettes themselves. Background information will also include an analysis of the cost of cigarettes. Effects on health insurance will also be examined. B. The backing sources where the information will come from include the Food and Drug Administration and the Social Science Research Solutions under contract with Harvard School of Public Health. These studies and others will provide the necessary information to provide a very effective argument for banning cigarette smoking.
III. Key Definitions Paragraph (The Warrant) A. Key terms that will need to be defined for the audience
For both the pro and con sides these facts are presented in order to support each paper's opinions. One opinion of the pro side is that the market of cigarettes is a market for disease and death. At one point the paper states, "Outrage at an industry that has made billions selling sickness and death" the paper enforces this opinion later by saying, "For decades, Big Tobacco has made a profit by selling the instruments of disease and death." Another opinion is that tobacco industries are the only companies that manufacture a product which causes serious illness and kills. The pro side quotes Edward L. Kaven, author of Smoking: The Story Behind the Maze as saying, "the only industry which produces a consumer product that is likely to kill and render human beings seriously ill when used as intended." I believe that these opinions are exaggerated ones. First of all, the tobacco companies are not the only companies that sell a product that is unhealthy and even has devastating affects on people.
Consumption of Tobacco is a worldwide phenomenon. Nearly every country is planning to raise more restrictions around the consumption of Tobacco. The awareness about its ill effects is rising through the corridors of Parliaments of many countries with the help of governmental and non-governmental organizations. There are some internationally recognized organizations like the “World Lung Foundations” that are striving hard to reduce the consumption of tobacco to a bare minimum. There are numerous reasons that support the argument that tobacco should be completely banned from the United Sates.
Many drugs are used, misused, and abused in American society today. Some of these carry stigma in the general population, forcing users into an underground drug subculture. Others are accepted and almost promoted under certain circumstances. Tobacco is one of those drugs. Tobacco will be discussed in the context of cigarette smoking. This is not to undermine the existence or danger of other forms of tobacco, but instead to have an exhaustive discussion of cigarette smoking and its societal impact. Cigarettes are a means of inhaling tobacco, where it enters the lungs and is absorbed through the blood vessels, traveling to the heart, from which it is finally pumped to the brain (Hogan, Gabrielsen, Luna, and Grothaus 2003:76). Cigarettes are detrimental to society because they not only affect the user who chooses to smoke; they impact people around them through second-hand and residual smoke. The damage done by cigarettes is not impossible to address. Successful prevention measures are already in place, but this paper intends to suggest other more direct measures, especially related to statutory regulations.
Tobacco has existed for long as we have known about history, but due to the negative effects of it to the broader community Tobacco has sparked greater controversy across the globe. Many people argue that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the individual but on the contrary some disagree and believe it’s up to the individual. This essay will elaborate above mentioned aspects and lead to a logical conclusion.
B. With intense and thorough research, I have seen that smoking in public does not only affect the person, but also has an impact on the surrounding people and environment.
For years cigarettes have been known to cause cancer, emphysema, and other horrible illnesses. The deaths of over 420,000 Americans this year will be attributable to cigarettes. With some of the other causes of preventable deaths such as, alcohol, illegal drugs, AIDS, suicide, transportation accidents, fires, and guns, cigarettes still account for more preventable deaths than those do combined, as stated by Lonnie Bristow M.D. of the American Medical Association at her speech to Indiana University. Some researchers have also found that smoking by pregnant women causes the deaths of over 5,000 babies and 115,000 miscarriages. The best way to get rid of the suffering and loss of life by cigarettes is to ban them. We can no longer stand aside and watch fellow Americans die because they smoke cigarettes. Thousands of smokers try to rid
Now, more than ever, more and more people are beginning to look at tobacco use as a major public health concern. It is nineteen ninety nine, and the number of smokers is rising while the average age of smoking initiation decreases. There are those that believe using tobacco of any type should be illegal, or at least restricted. Others believe it is up to the person to choose whether to use tobacco products or not, however most of these people believe tobacco companies should warn their customers of their products harmful affects.
illegal. We must also consider the thousands of employees who will be left unemployed if such a
One of the largest and most problematic health issues in our society is smoking. Smoking is currently the leading cause of death in our country, due to its harmful and addicting contents, such as nicotine and tobacco. Although millions die from it each year, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death as well. Without smoking, a tremendous amount of money and lives will be saved. I think that our country should ban smoking and the production of cigarettes in order to maintain a healthier nation, help save the environment, and prevent the almost 1000 deaths that they cause in fires each year.
The use of tobacco places a financial burden on the society that we live in. The amount of money that is spent each year for health care for the smokers is alarming. If they chose to ban tobacco, than the country wouldn’t be put in as much debt. Spending $170 billion each year on a problem that could be diminished is a no brainer. It should be put to an end. It is understood that our country didn’t know what they were getting themselves into with the production of tobacco back in 1612 when it was first grown, but now we are aware of the health effects it causes. (“History of
Cigarette addiction drives the sales of cigarettes, as a result; doctors as well as the government benefit from the sales of cigarettes. Doctors get paid for treating people suffering from diseases and cancers caused by smoking. Hence the quote, “A cigarette a day keeps the doctors in pay”. In addition, the government benefits alot from the heavy sales tax on cigarettes. Smoking is known for reducing stress and it is proven through many scientific studies. This stress relieving factor contributes to its addiction as well as nicotine. Another reason a person might smoke is to ensure that don’t become obese. Smoking is known for reducing risk of obesity. Also, researchers discovered smoking decreases the risks of Alzheimer's disease but by doing that it increases the risk for dementia. Additionally, smoking is known for reducing aggression; therefore, smokers have more pleasure throughout their daily lives. As a result of this research, other researchers can obtain the information provided throughout this paper in a many ways. For instance, if a researcher is completing a paper of their own with a topic similar to making cigarettes illegal, , they can use the information I found to strengthen their own
Smoking is an expensive habit. People who smoke cigarettes can spend as much as $2,500 a year on them. Smokers’ claim that it helps relax them and it releases stress but the negative aspects of smoking outweigh the positive. Smoking is a health hazard for smokers and non-smokers. Smokers should have the right to choose what to do with their own health but they should respect non-smokers. Many people believe that there are good and bad outcomes from smoking. I believe that smoking is bad and that it should be banned.
My research paper is over the negative effects of tobacco and the ban of it. There are many negative effects of the use of tobacco. Not only is it bad for the person that’s smoking it but its bad for the person that’s around the user of it. In conclusion to that statement I feel like the use of tobacco should be banned or made of a safer substance. Not just for the community, but for the users their self. They do not understand the negative effects that are happening to them because they are addicted and it’s hard for them to stop.
A. Second hand smoke causes just as many of the same health issues to those around a smoker and as could be produced in the smoker. As reported by the Center for Disease Control, illness from smoking ranges from lung cancer, ischemic heart disease, and chronic airway obstruction as well as shortening a person's lifespan averaging 13.2 years for me and 14.5 years for women (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion). These are risks that many smokers know may just be regurgitated facts, but is not hearing them once more another chance to decide that health is better than a cigarette? Much of the health issues that society deals with today would be greatly decreased if more and more people began to quit smoking.
Smoking cigarettes has been a huge public health issue in America for many years. They should be banned for they’ve caused many people their lives. The United States government along with other countries like the UK have moved towards a ban on cigarette smoking in public places. Defender of this approach argue that smoking cigarettes cause health risks for non-smokers. This may lead to a major economic consideration for Tobacco is the second major cause of mortality in the world. “[Tobacco] imposes a terrible toll in health, lives and dollars on families, business and government. Tobacco kills more than 400,000 people annually — more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined.”
