After reading both passages, I believe that children should use ''screen-time'' in moderation. It is true that overuse of electronic media can lead to some mental illness or developmental retardation, depending on the content veiwed and the amount of exposure. Yet for some, electronic meida can be used to encourage learning through educational programs. Does this mean that all media is beneficial? No, of course not. Too much screen-time can lead to children becoming lazy and lethargic, preferring to stay inside and tune out reality rather than do something more productive. As a child all of my surrounding peers had alot going on throughout the day, this made it hard to have friends to play with in a small town. I never wanted to play by myself, hense the reason I was in the house more than I was outside. This meant being in my room in front of a TV, pushing all my family out and pulling all the nonsense from the TV in. I was diagnosed with severe depression by the age of ten. Now I'm not saying the screen time has the full blaim, but it took its part. "Spending time in front of screens also fractures viewers' attention and saps mental energy. Depression has also been linked to screen viewing before sleep at night." (Screen Time Limits Are Vital for Children).
According to some research this is another reason to reduce screen time. Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a non-profit research and production institute, suggested that little ones spend less than half the time in front of screens watching educational material between the ages of 2 and 10. We can only assume that statistic will deplete in time. Family income cannot be helped but is also a determining factor. According to the center lower income families had their children doing better with watching educational screen activities then higher income families. I take that as less means leads to more interaction and attention to the better educational route and more leading to lack
Some people say that too much screen time for children is bad for their health. Others argue that it's perfectly fine for children to enjoy some time with the TV. I personally believe that in moderation, TV isn't that bad. In the article, It's Time to Let Go of Screen Fears, it states that kids who watched telvison with parent showed signs of decreased anger and fear. In my own experience, I've seen the positive affects that TV has on children. Although it can be a good thing, if you don't limit your time with the TV it can be harmful.
Statistics show that screen time negatively affects children’s learning abilities and development. “The effects of so much screen time can include speech delays, aggressive behavior and obesity.” (Lavey) Since parents play a role in how much television their kids can watch, they can minimize the chances of their brains not developing correctly. “The first 2 years of life are considered a critical time for brain development. Dunckley states, “…interactive screen-time is more likely to cause sleep, mood, and cognitive issues, because it’s more likely to cause hyper arousal and compulsive use.” She lists six reasons how electronics alter our moods.

There have been a multitude of studies in recent years on the subject of screen time and the effects it can have on children of all ages. Previously, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that children from 0-2 years of age not be exposed to any screen time at all (American Academy of Pediatrics, [AAP], 2016). This included television, video games, smart phones, tablets, movies and computers. The AAP has recently changed its recommendation, though, stating that “Some media can have educational value for children starting at around 18 months of age, but it 's critically important that this be high-quality programming, such as the content offered by Sesame Workshop and PBS.” (AAP, 2016). Spending to much time in front of screens can have negative affects on a child. To much screen time can take a physical and mental toll on chirldren. Lights from these screens can confuse chirldren's body clocks and disrupt sleep. To much screen time can also fractue viewers attention and sap mental energy. Depression and obesity have aslo been linked to to much screen viewing.
With all of these studies, it can be difficult to make a decishion on screen time and what's best for our children. We all as perents only want the best for our children. Because of all the information it is difficult to say if it is the screen time is the factor that causes these negitive effects, or maybe there were other factors.
Kids who get too much "screen time" -- from watching too much TV, surfing the Internet and playing video games -- tend to perform poorly at school. Researchers have found the brain releases dopamine, a chemical related to attention and focus, when kids watch TV or play video games -- something that gives the child a "stimulus surge." With too much screen time, kids get desensitized and can't focus on something like a book without that super-stimulating effect.
As a matter of fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages too much of screen media exposure for children. There is proof that extended and regular exposure to screen media may lead to reduced concentration among kids.

Along with a resistance to change, many educators fear the negative affect that screen time can have on a developing child.
