Why to Become a Vegan
A vegan is a person who chooses not to consume any animal byproducts, including: flesh foods, dairy, eggs, and any other products made from or tested on animals. Vegetarianism, however, which can commonly be viewed as the same thing, is far from it. Vegetarians chose only to not consume meat, but they continue to eat other animal byproducts. Most vegans believe that “Being a vegan is definitely more of a lifestyle choice and a philosophy that a diet” (Medical News Today). Although many people are starting to eat vegan for a week as a diet, they are not being true to the vegan philosophy; respecting the earth and all living things, promoting non-violence, and sticking to it. “The average protein intake for a vegan ranges from 52-63 grams per day,” the Vegetarian Resource Group States. As stated by the Wildflour Vegan Bakery Cafe, “The average American eats twice as much protein as necessary for a healthy diet and much of that is from red meat. Getting protein from beans and grains is much healthier and reduces the risk for osteoporosis”. Basic needed vitamins like Vitamins B and D lack in a vegan meal plan. Most vegans take a B-12 supplement, because the vitamin is usually only present in animal products. Vitamin D is added to cow’s milk and some non dairy milks, but it also comes from the sun. Vegans can get a healthy dose of this vitamin if they make sure to read labels or take a supplement. Although it may be hard to get some of the basic vitamins needed, most all of the food that is being replaced, is getting substituted for a healthier option. Some people may immediately think margarine is worse than butter, but when comparing nutrition facts, margarine is actually better. Comparing 100 grams of butter and 100 grams of margarine, they both have 717 calories and 81 grams of fat. The difference is what types of fat. Saturated fat and polyunsaturated fat are bad for your body, and in butter, 51 grams out of the total 81 grams is saturated fat. VFW Post 9528 in Buckhead Ridge recently elected a new commander, and in doing so, became one of only seven posts in the state of Florida to ever elect a female commander. Patricia Yount is not only the first female commander of Post 9528, she is also the first in District 11, which includes Lake Placid, Fort Pierce, Jenson Beach, Vero Beach, Sebring, Stuart, Hobe Sound, Sebastian, and Okeechobee. The Veterans of Foreign Wars opened its membership to women in 1970, but men still outnumber women by a huge number. Commander Yount explains that her post has 313 members, and only four of those are female. She is working on ideas to attract more women, and hopes to implement them in the near future.
Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Eating Animals” was extraordinary. As a former meat buyer for a large food distributor, I had visited kill floors several times, and I had made some assumptions about the book before I read it. But the meat business has changed radically since I was a buyer and I found the first-hand accounts of extreme animal abuse Safran Foer employed in the book not only to be controversial but also repulsive. It was very difficult to read about some of the regularly used techniques that factory farms use in the name of efficiency.
Hey Gina, I really enjoyed reading your post. “Iyanla, Fix My Life”, is a show that I watch quite often so I was very impressed that you used a moment in her show as your research concepts. For this exercise, Iyanla used the items that were put in the suitcase as a test to gain insight on the husband and wife troubled past. Because each item held a bad memory Iyanla was able to get a reaction from each one of them as they put the label on each item. The reaction caused a question to be asked about the item that they were holding. This opens them both up to discussing the memory. I think this was a wonderful way for a couple to discuss things in their past that they have never talked about or wanted to discuss. Do you think this method helped

Vegetarians are people who do not eat meat, and for some, do not consume any animal products at all. Vegetarian has been along for a long time and with time has grown the controversy over the topic. The reasons that vegetarianism has grown into a controversial topic are mostly the human beliefs and health reasons associated with it.
According to vegansociety.com, “ Veganism represents a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, other animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, other animals and the environment.“ People that follow this way of living are called vegans. The vegan diet is more a lifestyle choice and a philosophy than just a diet. The vegan life is the best way to live because it’s healthier, helps the environment, and is kinder to animals.
Veganism to me it's a lifestyle where a person chooses not to consume, wear, nor use any animal products. Even though going vegan helps million of animals around the world; which is so inhumane and I don't know how people, like my family, can claim to love animals but pay to kill them, it also helps and improves many more things. For example, our health; the article says that our energy would increase if we consumed a plant-based diet, which is very interesting because if we were meant to be eating a animals then that would increase our energy but since they take so long to be digested, they are actually taking energy that we could use for other things. The first thing that usually comes to one’s mind when they hear the word Veganism is healthy. However, many points would debate against and for this very statement. There are many researches that prove the vegan diet is a healthy one and that this diet is better than a normal animal product eating one, however none proving that it is better than all the other diets, like some people claim the plant-eating one to be. Being a vegan means that you miss essential nutrients on a day to day basis such as vitamins, iron, zinc and calcium just to name a few. It involves a strong commitment and can also restrict certain fashion statements in some way or form. Vegans avoid any consumption of any [animal related food or fabric that has been fabricated with animal skin]. Although many, do not see the vegan choice as a reasonable way to a healthy living, many Americans have seen their diet change being influenced by popular artists, such as Beyoncé, who endorse the idea of veganism.
The summer before my junior year one of my friends and I decided that we wanted to try out going vegan, just for fun, and just for that summer. I'd given up meat before for lent and I didn't think that was too difficult, and I just liked the idea of a challenge. When I started this I had no idea that it would change my perspective and my view on the world. Throughout that summer I began to educate myself on the reasons that many people go vegan, those who don't just do it for fun. I was horrified by the cruelty that I had been consuming, and how terrible it was that no one knew about it.

Some would not be able to live without eating any animal products in their diets, such as, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, and honey. For vegans, however, this is a normal way of life. Vegans are frequently misunderstood as either people who have eating disorders, or an unnatural passion for animal rights. It is time for people to realize that veganism, a challenging yet rewarding lifestyle, goes way beyond being skinny or caring for animals.
