Did you know that 64% of students go to bed later than 10:00? Schools around the world start around 7-8 o'clock. Which is extremely early for students. In a recent survey students took the majority said they wanted school to start at 9 am. Many students are tired when they get to school and are more likely to not to pay attention in class. They also don’t have time to eat breakfast. And finally students are usually late because they have slept in.
Students are not all awake in the morning. In recent studies students brains start to normally function around 10am. According to Kyla Washtrom she states “Once these school districts change, they don't want to go back.” This shows that when the districts keep their hours and starting time they will not change, but they do not understand the consequences of the times. Students are not awake for their two classes so they will not be able to focus and pass. If school started later students would be more focused and more awake for the two periods. They will have to do without or eat school food, which is disgusting. If school started later students will have more time to eat and get ready. If students don't eat they will be hungry until lunch. Breakfast is the most important period of the day and many students don't eat because they don't have time. You can say students that students should wake up earlier to eat, well 64% of students go to bed after 10:00 and students won't wake up earlier. School breakfast is usually 10 times worse than not eating. Also schools have paid breakfast, not free. “Not getting enough sleep is common among high school students and is associated with several health risks including being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance.” according to the CDC. Schools all around the nation have starting times for school, that are too early for the students and teachers alike. Schools starting times should be 8:30 in the morning or later, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sleep loss has become more common in children due to early start times which only gives them 6-7 hours of sleep a night when growing children should have 8-9 hours a night. children suffer the chronic loss of sleep due to the hormonal roller coaster that you call puberty, which only lets them begin to go into a REM sleep around 10 p.m. . It’s also been proven that adolescent children suffer from highers risks of physical health problems, mental health problems, lower test scores, missing school, substance abuse, and being in a car crash due to sleep deprivation. Students end up having to get up before 6:30 to get ready and catch the bus or walk to school, but when you have to study for hours after school, eat, clean up, participate in extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, and do chores in less than 4 hours to get the sleep they require to be healthy mentally and physically it’s almost impossible. School should start later to better our future generations, with more sleep we could have more positive members of societies.
Have you ever been really tired when you wake up for school in the morning? Sleep is very important to all teens, or it should be. Young adults should have 8.5-9.25 hours of sleep every night, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), in Sarah McKibben’s article “Wake Up Calls”. Unfortunately, two-thirds of teens are getting less than 7 hours of sleep each night, according to the NSF’s chart. This is causing a large number of schools and scientists to think that schools should start later in the morning. I fiercely disagree with this. Schools should not start later because starting later for high schools would cause too many negative consequences.
The first reason why schools should shift their start times to later in the day is because getting more sleep improves standardized test scores. For example, a study from Wake county, North Carolina found that,
Students and teachers won’t be rushed in the morning to get ready. Students have to gather homework, backpacks, binders and lunchboxes. Students could forget their supplies when they are rushed. Students sometimes don’t even have time to eat breakfast. When kids skip breakfast, they don’t get what they need to preform their best in school. On top of not being rushed, you will not be as stressed whether you’re a parent, teacher or student.Even though students would get out of school later in the afternoon, students would more sleep, wouldn’t be rushed in the morning, and would be able to focus more at school.If school started later in the day, students wouldn’t be stressed or rushed.
To begin, Ben Franklin once said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” So as long as we sleep earlier, then there will be no need to start schools later, right? Wrong. According to Newsweek, kids our age are biologically programmed to fall asleep at 11. Waking up for school around 6 in the morning, this leaves us with a mere 7 hours of sleep, as opposed to the 9 hours we need. It’s no wonder that even those students who drink gallons of coffee every morning are still exhausted during class.
When I went to high school, class would start every day at 7:45 am which would require me to get up at about 6 am every morning. As a result of that, I would go to school feeling restless, exhausted, and I cared more about getting through the day more than actually learning in class. This lead me on to feeling poorly almost every day and made it difficult to balance catching up on sleep and getting my school work done. If you were a teen once you might be familiar with this struggle. Even though this a reality that most teens including myself have faced, it has been discovered that it has more negative effects than you might think. Not everyone would agree, but I believe if school start times were later, it would highly benefit the students academically.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. Do you ever wake up and feel like you haven’t gotten enough sleep? The reason is because in reality you probably haven’t. Studies show that schools should not start any earlier that 8:30 in the morning due to teens suffering from sleep deprivation. There are many negative effects this condition can have on a teens body including a direct effect on one’s physical and mental health, public safety and excelling in the future. In the Ted Talk video, " Why school should start later for teens" by, Wendy Troxel. Ms. Troxel explained why school should start later for teens.. Students are very drowsy in the morning and are usually rushing to get to school on time which limits breakfasts times and healthy food options. Schools should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for several reasons but sleep deprivation is the most important. Sleep deprivation can cause a direct effect to a child’s general health and behavior, public safety and potentially future success.
On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. Many students are running out of time to get ready in the morning due to sleeping in, and this is having an affect on their grade, so I think that the start of school should be moved forward to about 10:00 in the morning. Since the brain is not fit to take in information until about 10:00am, the early morning classes are being neglected. Everyone loves that extra couple minutes of sleep every once in a while. That extra five minutes can always make people's day a little bit easier to handle.Yet we are preventing student, our future, from relaxing and readying their minds to learn. This is why all schools should begin at 9:00 am because, a later start time improves student health, and starts improving student attendance, and test scores.
We as high school students, are tired of waking up every weekday at 5am just to get ready for school. We can’t concentrate and get an education if we are half awake. You can tell when students come into class and just sleep through the lesson, or when you start to see heavy bags under their eyes before they sleep.High School students should start school later in the morning, because scientific studies shows that the young teens academic levels are decreasing. High schools around the nation begin around seven in the morning causing students to fall asleep in classes. For years this has been occurring, but now it is time for change. All high schools should start later in the morning to improve the overall experience of schooling.
Being a teenager there are many things I blame school for, but there is one thing that has been proven to be caused by school. Did you know that according to Stanford Medicine more than 87 percent of high school students in the United States get far less than the recommended eight to 10 hours? To many teens they must choose between playing a school sport, doing homework, or getting a good night’s sleep when coming home from school. “A National Sleep Foundation poll reported that 28 percent of teenagers have fallen asleep in class at least once due to lack of sleep. Negative effects of sleep loss include impairments in mood, attention, memory, behavior and executive function…. Finally, this study found that sleep-deprived teens are at a higher risk of car accidents” (NEA). Imagine how much better students could do in school if school started later. Could it possibly profit teachers and parents also? If schools began later students would focus more resulting in better grades and test scores for students and could also be beneficial for parents and teachers.
One of the leading reasons why schools should start later is restlessness. According to one of the articles, “teens are often still seen as the root cause of their own chronic sleepiness” (Lewis). It is said that the circadian rhythm shifts during adolescence, resulting in the ability to stay awake later. This decreases the number of hours of sleep a teenager receives daily, so tiredness during school occurs. Also, technology has consumed the lives of many young adults and may contribute to less sleep (Lewis). Personally, my parents used to take my phone before I went to bed because they wanted me to be able to function the following morning. Although I hated that back then, I understand their reasoning today and thank them.
