INTRODUCTION:
“Domestic violence is abuse or threats of abuse when the person being abused and the abuser are or have been in an intimate relationship” (California Courts, 2014).
Domestic violence against men refers to being in an abusive intimate relationship such as marriage, co-habitation, dating or within the family. As with violence against woman domestic violence is considered a serious crime. Many men who report abuse to the police often get criticized and often face social stigma. People have trouble understanding why a woman who is being abused by her significant other does not simply leave the relationship. When the roles are reversed, then the man is the victim of the abuse; people are beyond clueless and are confused as to why he selects to stay. However, anyone who is in an abusive relationship understands that it is never that simple, to just pick up and leave. Ending a relationship, even an abusive one, is rarely easy. Domestic violence against men is believed to be nonexistent. According to Strauss (2003), he says, “There are many theories on the causes of domestic violence.” Some of those theories can be due to traumatic events in a man’s childhood and therefore it affects their thinking which in turn causes them to accept domestic violence. However, some of the few reasons men do not leave is for the sake of their children, they feel ashamed/embarrassed, they are in denial
According to “The United States Department of Justice” Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. This goal was met. Women stay in abuse relationships for a number of reasons. One reason many women stay is because they are afraid to leave because of the threats from their abuser. Whether the treats are directed at the victim, their children or other family members, the threats are serious. Another reason many women stay in abusive relationships is because they have low self-esteem and feel they have done something to deserve the abuse. For the client I spoke to, there were a lot of factors that kept her from leaving. Because she was completely financially dependent on her abuser, she felt she didn’t have the resources to survive without him. She also felt that even though he was abusing her, her boyfriend was the only person who loved and cared for
This part of the dissertation will cover the similarities and differences between men and women as victims of domestic violence. The first topic that will be discussed is reporting. It can be difficult to understand or grasp the concept that men can be abused by women and nearly near the rate that women are assaulted and abused by men. In the white paper (Home Office, 2003) domestic violence was mainly described in terms of violence against women, males were largely ignored despite being acknowledged. In the white paper (Home Office 2016) things appeared to be different as male victims were acknowledged which suggests that it is becoming widely known that there is violence against men and it is being viewed as an issue. The Northern Rock Foundation concluded from their research that some males did not report partner abuse because they considered the occurrence too trivial and not worth reporting. Their research also looked into the large differences between the experiences of males and females; it was found that females were the main group to ask for help and also communicate with services. DOJ figures indicated that males are 11 percent less likely than women to report any type of violent crime that they were victims in. Ivankovich suggests that there are a number of explanations why male victims are unwilling to report. Men suffer abuse in silence because they fear that they will not be believed and people may jump to worse conclusions such as he is the perpetrator. Males
According to The National Domestic Violence Hotline, the abused stay in domestic relationships due to fear, embarrassment, low self-esteem, love, and believing that the abuse is normal. For me, these are all true.
Domestic violence is aggressive behavior within the home, generally involving the abuse of a spouse or partner in order to gain control or maintain power over another. This type of violence can be sexual, physical, emotional, or even psychological in which these threats influence the other person. It is not only about physical abuse, it’s the consistent pattern of behaviors that are used to make the victim feel threatened and manipulated.
Domestic violence: a taboo issue in our society, where the discussion is shut down by fear of instability or vulnerability. A crime, hidden from plain view, behind closed doors, that harms up to half a million innocent individuals every year. Someone is experiencing some form of domestic violence as we speak as for every 15 seconds there is a woman beaten around the world, and for every hour as many as 115 children are abused. Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, is a violation of human rights. It involves violent, abusive or intimidating behaviour carried out by an adult against a partner or former partner to control and dominate that person. Violence of any form should not be accepted in our modern society it nurtures fear and hatred, and it should not be locked away as an allowable social norm. We should be better than that.
There are several characteristics of abusers. Abusers can be anyone from your parents to your children. Many times abusers have issues that haven’t been resolved. Some of the abuse results from being abused or it comes from social problems. Regardless of the situation abuse is never okay and should be handled accordingly. This essay will cover the characteristics of abusers of domestic violence and what roles substance abuse plays in domestic violence. One characteristic of an abuser is destroying an individual’s property and the things they care about. When an abuser feels like an individual is going to leave the abuse, the abuser will sometimes feel threatened and start trashing their items in their house. It is a way of controlling the situation and trying to make it work out in their favor. Another characteristic is the way an abuser controls everything in one’s life their money, who that individual talks to, and if that person works. Controlling behaviors from abusive persons can get to the point where the individual may feel that they don’t have control over their own life or allowed to do anything due to fear of upsetting the abuser. An abuser may not want the person to work or make more money than them. According to text “Controlling a person’s employment by trying to get him or her fired, making excessive calls to work, or creating scenes are examples of efforts to control the victim’s financial situation and force dependence”

Every year in the United States, One in four women are victims of the domestic violence; however, this is only based on what has been reported to the department of justice (Stahly 2008). While men are also victims of domestic violence, women are more often the victims. Moreover, 90% of domestic violence is male initiated. In severe cases domestic violence ends with victims being murdered. More specifically, domestic violence resulted in 2,340 deaths in the United States in 2007, and 70% of those killed were females (CDC 2012). Many people think that victims have the option of leaving and many people blame victims for putting up with the abuse; what many people don 't know is, victims of domestic violence have many reasons preventing them from leaving their abusers, these reasons include, isolation, having children bounding them with the abuser and lack of financial support. "It 's never pretty when you leave an abusive and controlling relationship. The warden always protests when a prison gets shut down," says Dr. Steve Maraboli (qtd from web). Whether a victim stays or leaves their abuser, the outcomes of both situations are not always as easy as many people predict. In some situations, the outcomes of leaving may be very dangerous for both the victim and her children.
