Why It Is Important To Go To College

Attending college for the first time is an important, rewarding decision that I made for a good reason. I learned a lot about myself that will help me in my future. Setting goals, having expectations, and reflecting why I am in college is incredible to think about.

When first reading this article it made me really think, “Why is college so important?”. Then I thought about all the benefits. The author in this article discusses how successful you can be without going to college. She is forgetting the reason college is so important and why so many people get a college education. This article makes a lot of points but leaves out a lot more. I agree with the author on the idea of college is not for everyone. It all depends on the person and what career field you are going in to.

In life, people ask why college is necessary when it is possible to get an entry-level job and work up the ranks. When thoroughly thought about, people begin to realize the countless reasons a college education is essential to society. College paves the way for a sense of responsibility, freedom, financial stability, and most importantly, without a college education, many of the professions that are most needed would be easily obtainable by unqualified personnel. Before one is on their own, they never have to worry about their responsibilities alone. In high school, parents were there to make sure they woke up and made it to school on time every day.

Why is college so important? A few years ago, most people only obtained their high school diploma and would receive any job in the market, but colleges have become the twenty-first century key to success. Jobs are now being given to those who are more educated and college provides this extra education. It is not the same as high school. High school education consists of a more general knowledge, which is a small amount of information about all the topics, but college is focused on the major. College graduates have more comprehension in their area than those with a high school diploma. As President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.” (Chicago Tribute). His point is that the more educated a person is; the higher goals they can obtain. College is the best way to succeed because it provides more education about deeper knowledge and moral value. It also opens up more job opportunities, and practical knowledge about the discipline and enlightened understanding.

Is college really that important to spend thousands of dollars on and years after high school? People are often debating whether college is a logically decisions, and also debate the importance of college. College is important because it provides many opportunities, more independence, and a great investment.

The necessity of a college degree brings controversy to a new generation between those who want to develop their education and those who get into the society without obtaining a higher education. Throughout getting a college degree, people can develop themselves in educational ways and physical ways with intensive education. In contrast, some people believe a college education is not necessary in order to achieve what they want, because real life experience and knowledge are better than a formal education. However, current rapid technology development needs knowledgeable and professional people. According to news, “As the economy becomes more technologically complex, the amount of education that people need will rise” (Leonhardt). Education could be main solution to economic problem and main invest to develop technology. Educated people look forward innovation, and that innovation brings modern life. Even though many people believe school and college do not support substantive work experiences, I believe a college education helps people to get organized and standardized in order to help students get high quality jobs, build up relationships, and challenge their maximum value of their talent.

A college education in the twenty-first century is easily one of the most crucial things that can make life cruise by at a much more comfortable pace. College prepares you for a “real world” job by connecting you to college related internships, forces you to gain organizational skills, creates a self-worth and independence, and finally the experience is simply worth it.

Most people would argue that college is quite the profound milestone in our society today. Individuals often coin the phrase “the best time of their lives” when referring back to their college years. That being said, the argument can be made that during that so called “life changing experience,” it is crucial to focus on one’s area of study to either expand one’s academic career, or live prosperously out in the real world. After all, why invest all that money and time in a college education, without possessing strategic and critical thoughts towards the future? Also, generally speaking, people tend to focus in on academic aspects like grades, grade point averages, and test scores when selecting a seemingly efficient candidate for a graduate or even a job position. In those terms, there is practically no exaggerating the fact that grades are essential in order to be of high regard in the academic community and possibly be eligible for more job opportunities. Thus, to secure a beneficial future, one should dedicate themselves to curricular/academic activities during their time in an undergraduate program.

It was only when I had my son that I realized just how important it is to have a college education. Despite working more than forty hours a week at a daycare, I was struggling to pay bills and provide for my family. Pawning and selling valuables to make sure we had enough food to eat for the week was a regular occurrence and knowing which days of the month the nearest food bank was open became a regular calendar event. Qualification requirements limited opportunities outside the daycare and jobs that did not ask for a degree did not pay enough to be able to afford daycare while I worked. Many times, I would lie awake at night trying to figure out how to make ends meet, wishing I could give my son more, and cursing myself for not getting an education and having a career. Becoming a single mother was what pushed me to go to college at the age of 33. My overall goal is to provide a wonderful life for my son, where he will have everything he needs and more, by working in a field that I believe in and that provides the type of salary I need to support him. The educational goals and objectives that I have set for myself include attaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at UTEP, doing an internship through the Criminal Justice Department, and taking full advantage of the resources that UTEP offers to hone my skills and gain valuable knowledge that will set me up for success as a crime and intelligence analyst for law enforcement, a career that will help me carry out my

I would like to acknowledge my entire family for their help and for never giving up on me. I have to thank my parents for tirelessly encouraging a son who didn’t seem that interested in getting a degree for a very long time. They also shouldered an enormous portion of the financial burden involved in attending a university. I would also like to thank my younger brother. Ironically, he has been a role model for me, and has been an example of how to be a better student as well as a better man. Both of my grandmothers have been wonderful and patient with me, while making sure that I understood that they were both expecting a graduation at some point. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge my wife, who has supported and encouraged me during this last stretch of going back to school after a long hiatus. Without her love and support on a daily basis, I am quite sure I would not be completing my degree in December.

Best selling author Peter Heller once said that “a high school education is no longer substantial enough for an individual to succeed in today's job market, and that receiving a college education is paramount”(Heller). Heller states here that many jobs in the United States today no longer higher a majority of workers with only an high school degree too their name, and that the only way to succeed in today's economy is to obtain a college diploma. A college education is essential in order to succeed in today's economy because of companies selectively hiring, differences in salaries, and overall quality of life.

Ever since I was a young girl, I have loved learning. I used to read anything in front of me, even the Spanish labels on shampoo bottles. Naturally, I was set on not stopping my education at a high school diploma. Therefore, going to college has always been a goal of mine, and I’m finally able to fulfill that goal. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to expand my mind and discover new information. However, as I’m getting older, I realize that fulfilling my college goal is not the only reason I chose to pursue a college degree. New reasons have arisen. For instance, I need a higher education to work in a medical field, and going to college is something that feels obligatory. How apathetic are these reasons, though? Growing up so often steals curiosity and passion, which I find disheartening. So, I have decided to fight that, and I will fight by reflecting on not only the economic reasons I started college, but also on remembering my enthusiasm for learning, my desire for self-improvement, and the eternal implications of my decisions.

But with the increasing dropout rate today, students seem less interested in learning at college and their priorities change from their original goal of graduating.
