Smoking, Not Only the Health Issue
Introduction
The prevalence of smoking in Canada The prevalence of smoking in Canada has decreased over past decades. According to University of Waterloo’s report “Tobacco Use in Canada: Patterns and Trends” (2014), in 1965 the smoking rate was over 50% but now the rate is only 16.1% in 2012. Compared the rate in Canada with other countries, the smoking rate of Canada is still lower than most of countries and the average smoking rate among world, which is about 21%. From OECD Factbook (2014), in 2011 Russia has the highest smoking rate which is over 30% and the lowest smoking rate appears in India, which is around 11%. The report also shows the decrease in smoking rate for all the countries except Czech Republic.
Canadian government policies on tobacco controlling The most important factors that contribute to the declining in the smoking rate in Canada are government policies. Tobacco Control Act has 3 main regulations. 1. It is illegal to sell tobacco products to people under 19 years old. 2. Restricting tobacco products display in store and promotion of tobacco products. 3. Limiting the establishments

For students the most direct impact of smoking is that smoking is negatively related to students’ school performance. The results of poor academic achievement dose not reduce students’ self-confidence, but also affect their future employment status. On the other hand, the opportunity cost of smoking is much expensive than other habit. Based on University of Texas’ calculation , the annual cost on smoking for pack-a-day habit is about 3720 US dollars, which includes insurance cost, health care cost and etc.. Nevertheless, the cost in Canada should be much higher because the average price for a pack of cigarette in the US is only $6 but $10 in Canada. Besides, the currency exchange rate and price index will grow up the expenses for
Although the negative roles of smoking are very apparent, the tobacco industry plays an important social role in the world. Many teens use cigarettes as a means for bonding with their peers. Adults also use cigarettes as a form of "ice breaker" when socializing with others. The tobacco industry also provides a great source of revenue for the economy. The federal taxes on tobacco products bring in billions of dollars into the government's budget for various programs. So while the ruling could pose devastating effects on Canadian tobacco companies, society will benefit in the
Tobacco is a very large industry in Canada, providing very large tax revenue for the Canadian government. This paper examines the two sides to the argument; should Tobacco be made illegal in Canada? Is smoking tobacco ruining the Canadian economy? Or should Canadians be given the freedom to chose, and current rulings upheld?
The “cave” in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” is a metaphor for human’s mind, in this document he basically said that human need guidance that help them to get out of that “cave” and the cave that we are in right now is our mindset and our perception. Get out of our cave meaning create for us a new perception, give us a chance to gain back our free will and more than that it help us take back our freedom to think, question, analyze about this world. When you living your old thought and perception, at first you will feel terrifying, scare and depress because you don’t know what to do or what to think , you will question everything you do, see, touch or heard. However, it’s worth it because when you gave up your old knowledge that enlightened
The governments of the United States and many other countries have chosen to regulate addictive substances, like cigarettes, via taxation; minimum-age purchase laws; restrictions on consumption in schools, the workplace, and public places; and stiff fines for
Tobacco consumption is the number one cause of preventable deaths in the United States. In the United States, cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year. That is around one in five deaths annually only because of smoking. On an average, the person who smokes dies ten years earlier than a non-smoker. These statistics are not mere numbers but speak about the gravity of the situation. The United States government should portray a more negative view on Tabaco to save the lives of many people worldwide (Centre for Disease and Prevention, second paragraph).
Australia is the world leader in tobacco control, as they became the first country that implemented plain package policy. Since December 2012, all tobacco products which are traded and brought to Australia must be in plain packaging in order to implement the National Tobacco Strategy (NTS) 2012 – 2018. (National Tobacco Strategy, 2012, p.27) The range of policies including health signs on packaging, mass media campaigns, bans on tobacco promotion, price increases, and controls on smoking and access to tobacco were implemented (ibid, p.1). As a result, 2014-2015 data shows that 14.5 percent aged 18 years and above were daily smokers (2.6 million adults), dropped from 16 percent in 2011-12. This reduction is a continuation of the trend over the past two decades. In 2001, 22.4 percent of adults smoked daily, while 23.8% of adults smoked daily in 1995 (Australian Bureau of Statistic, 2015).
Legalizing marijuana is a hot potato in the world. Many people think that marijuana is a drug, so it should be illegal; however, other people consider that marijuana should be legalized because it has less risks than other drugs. In spite of the controversy surrounding marijuana, Canadians seem to be tolerant of it; the current government of Canada is trying to legalize the substance like alcohol.
Tobacco is one of the easiest drugs to purchase and consume around the world. Available in various smoke shops and grocery stores tobacco is widely available to the public. But what are the effects of the drug on people’s health? What are countries doing to stop it?
Just as some people may emphasize diversification in their stock portfolio, I highly value the role that diversity plays in my education, social life, and career aspirations. Throughout my educational experiences I have come to realize that I have varied interests in both the fields of, engineering and business. My interest in these two very different disciplines has allowed me to participate in activities involving technical knowledge, communication skills, and creative thinking. Through various extracurricular activities I have combined my business based aspirations with my technical engineering knowledge to interact with my local community and make a positive impact on the lives of young children.
Both passages Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery and Cheaper By The Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey have father figures for the children. They are both very different on how they react around their children. For starters Matthew from Anne of Green Gables is confused, shocked, shy, and he avoids conflict,on the other hand Dad from Cheaper By The Dozen is confident, kind, orderly, has a sense of humor, disciplined, strict, hard working, and proud of his children.
Department of Health & Human Services 2000 report by the Surgeon General. Increasing the price of a pack of cigarettes by ten percent has been shown to reduce smoking rates by an average of 4.8 percent (a mean price elasticity of -0.48) as more smokers quit and fewer potential smokers start. This effect is greatest among youth and low income consumers, who are particularly sensitive to price. However, inelastic goods, such as tobacco, have fewer substitutes and a price change will not have a significant influence on the quantity demanded. In the long run, time may be the greater influece as it moves the elasticity of cigarettes to one that is more elastic, if the smoker finds he can no longer afford the $2 per pack and eventually begins to kick the
The tobacco industry is important to the economy. In 1991, worldwide tobacco sales exceeded $59.8 billion and in 1992 the industry was rated as one of the top one hundred advertisers (Pechmann and Ratneshwar, 1994). However, there are high prices to pay - socially, economically, and personally - as a result of this industry. Annual mortality figures indicate that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. An estimated 390,000 people die each year of smoke related illnesses, which is greater than the combined mortality for cocaine, crack, AIDS, homicide, suicide, and alcohol abuse (Botvin, G., Baker, Botvin, E., Dusenbury, Cardwell, and Diaz, 1993).
Smoking is one of the leading factors to death and illnesses among people around the world. Unfortunately about half of all American adults smoke. Research shows that more men smokes that women. Regarding consequences and complications of smoking, research shows that people who smokes have more chances of getting different types of cancers, such as esophageal cancer, lung cancer, throat cancer, bladders cancer, or mouth cancer. Other smoking complications are heart attack, COPD, asthma, and bronchitis. Regarding costs of tobacco use, research shows that there are many different advertisements regarding purchasing cigarettes (research shows that in recent years there were about ten billion dollars that was spend on advertising cigarettes) which
- The Increase of the Unit Price for Tobacco Product: this recommendation is based on an intervention that consisted in the increase of tobacco product price by 20%. With that increase, the overall consumption of products derived from tobacco was decreased by 10.4%, the use among adult was reduced by 3.6%, and finally it decreased the initiation of tobacco use by young people by 8.6%.Economic evidences also suggested that the increase helped save money in healthcare cost ranging from -$0.14 to $90.02 per person in a year. In the meantime, some studies showed an increase in healthcare cost because people were living longer than expected after they quit smoking. (Community Preventative Services Task Force)
Smoking is harmful and dangerous for American University in Cairo (AUC) students. Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year (“Fast Facts”) and this is a large number of smokers that should be decreased. In Egypt, there are 34, 000 deaths each year due smoking, according to the article “Smoking in Egypt | Egypt Independent”. However, the number of smokers in Egypt is increasing every day and especially among youth. AUC took a first step to protect its students from this danger by banning indoor smoking. AUC banned smoking10 feet from classrooms to maintain a healthier environment .However, it did not decrease the number of smokers on campus so AUC should ban smoking on campus. This essay will prove that smoking should be banned on the AUC campus for several reasons. Firstly, the number of smoking youth is increasing every day because Egypt is a smoking culture and they observe their parents smoking with few changes in health. Secondly, AUC should try to provide a healthier environment for the students and the working faculty because it is its responsibility. Thirdly, ban on smoking will set an example in Egypt to quit smoking and prevent others from this dangerous habit. Finally, AUC students are role models for the Egyptian people so they should become healthier to be more productive.
