Why Is Slavery Bad

In the average American’s eyes, there is always assumptions made about slavery and the nature of slavery. Slavery was something that many people relied on for centuries. It is not something that can be easily forgotten and the importance of it cannot be understated. Slavery was simply the bondage of peoples who were then forced into labor on farms or in the city. Believe it or not, slavery did exist outside the standard cotton plantation and tobacco farms in the South. Slavery was all over the southern part of the country whether on a farm or in the ever-expanding cities. Slaves could also be found in small farms and towns.

Slavery was essentially an institution in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. The southern states would rely largely on slavery for their agriculture such as the cultivating and tending of their crops. The Thirteen colonies were originally founded in 1607 when the Puritans settled in Jamestown. Many other colonies were later added & that is where the Americans lived away from the British. Many of the things accomplished by the Americans could not have been done without the help of the African Americans brought into slavery. It is wrong to think that people needed to be enslaved for America to be what it is today, but it is key in the history of the United States.

An article entitled “Slavery” defined slavery as “social institution defined by law and custom as the most absolute and involuntary form of human servitude” (“Slavery”). Slavery is when a person is forced into labor without pay and usually slaves face inhumane and cruel conditions and punishments. Slavery is thought to be one of the greatest disappointments in human history as humans forced each other into serving them. The article then goes on to explain how slavery was against the Declaration of Independence but was still very prominent in America in the 1800s. Many Northern states had abolished it in their individual states but there were still millions of slaves being forced to worked in the South.

" I hold that in the present state of civilization, where two races of different origin, and distinguished by color, and other physical differences, as well as intellectual, are brought together, the relation now existing in the slaveholding States between the two, is, instead of an evil, a good a positive good." ... During the early years of the United States, there were major problems with racism and segregation amongst other things. Whites were seen as the superior race, and anyone who didn’t fit that description were seen as inferior. Because of that, slavery became a thing across the country (mostly in the South) and with it came a series of troubles. The act of slavery left a strong impact on the southern economy by allowing it to grow, but negatively affected those doing the hard labor not only physically but mentally as well.

In the mid 1800’s the use of slavery was growing really fast in North America. Most of the use of slavery was much more focused in the South than in the Northern part of the U.S. While cash crops such as cotton, tobacco, rice and sugar were highly produced and very popular in the South, slavery was still a number one priority. From 1820 to 1860 the population of the slaves drastically climbed from 1.5 million to almost 4 million. In 1845 James Henry Hammond who was a South Carolina planter and politician, wrote a letter to an English Abolitionist to show his opinions on what slavery really meant to him. In this letter he stated that the use of slavery was not a bad thing, he even mentioned translations from the Holy Bible and the Holy Scriptures. For example, he mentioned in the Holy Bible Leviticus Chapter twenty-five that says, you cannot deny that a “BONDMAN FOREVER” is a “SLAVE”; yet you endeavor to hang an argument of immortal consequence upon the wretched subterfuge, that the precise word “slave” is not to be found in the translation of the Bible. This example was used to help show how he used both Holy Scriptures and the Bible to help backup his statement on his own opinions toward slavery. Slavery was a dark time in America’s past. Not only did slavery separate millions of families, it destroyed the white man’s reputation to African people. Many slave owners treated their slaves well, many did not. They forced their slaves to live in deplorable conditions. Malnutrition and overworking often led to death. If you were a slave, would you risk it all and try to run away? You might not have a choice if you wanted to stay alive.

It is bad for slaves because they aren’t getting enough food and some get beat pretty often. It also shows what kind of person the Slaveholders are. Slaves are separated from families and kids are raised to see people getting beat and treated badly. Frederick Douglass wrote the book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and he told us how it was being a slave and talked about his slaveholders.

Slavery is a bad thing because no one should get treated the way African-Americans were treated during the 1600s. Most people understand that slavery was a terrible thing, but most might not fully understand the struggles that free colored men and women endured as well. While slavery was legal, free men would often be kidnapped and forced into slavery, and sometimes slaves actually escape to freedom. If an African American was considered a free man, he or she had to get official documentations stating so. Even after the documents were given to them, some of them still found themselves as slaves. There are many different stories about slavery, but just because a slave escapes from slavery, does not mean he or she is free from a slave’s mindset. Although they were in different positions in life, slaves and free African Americans experienced the same hardships, fears, and daily struggles.

In the land of the free, saying slavery is a dark part of the United States’ history would be an understatement. From the early 1600’s until the abolition of the practice in 1865, slavery would be a common sight amongst plantations. The slaves would not stand idly in their predicament, learning how to improve their situations and sometimes reaching compromises or rebelling against slave masters. Slavery during the antebellum United States encompassed the ideals of whites in the North and South, the influential relationships between the whites and blacks, and the controversial lives the slaves led.

For many years, slaves were worked to death in harsh systems. They worked hard jobs from can’t see to can’t see. Slaves were seen as property rather than human beings. They were treated badly by their masters. It was a super abusive lifestyle. It’s obvious that slaves didn’t like the type of life they lived. So over time, they realized that the only way to become free was by revolting.

Slavery is a bad thing because the victim would have no control over their life. The victim would have no freedom to do anything, and if the “master” wanted to hurt them there would be nothing they could do. The “master” would make them believe they need them, because they might make them think that no one would except them if they tried to go back to their old life, or they might tell them that no one would want them to come back because they are terrible at everything. These and more are ways to control the slavery victim.

Even though the slavery was introduced in the early 1600s, it had no doubt that the abolitionist inaugurated the movements about the slavery actively from early 1850s. The slavery became the essential part of industry in the South more than in the North because of the large plantations and slave trades. So in the Southerners’ perspective, the slave flourished the businesses with their inexpensive labor forces in order to profit; they argued slaves were by and large a culturally inferior, child-like people who were treated well by whites and thus content with their status in life. However, Uncle Tom’s Cabin described the slavery as an evil institution that must be abolished accurately from the historians today.
