Why Homework is Bad Many teachers in today's schools give homework out on a daily basis, and teachers assume that it is helping students learn the information taught in the classroom. However it is doing quite the opposite causing many problems for students. There are three major impacts that homework has on students, it causes more stress, it affects the student's family, lastly it affects grades and test scores as a whole. Homework has many more negative affects on students, families, grades, and goals. When a student takes homework home they will spend less time bonding with her family and more time fretting over the busy work they are receiving. When students are overwhelmed with homework social development drops dramatically, this causes poor social skills in the future for the affected student. Roughly three hours of homework each night is the average (Parker). With this much homework students are going to have less time with their family. The typical school day ends at 3:00pm, when you take into account the average of homework received by students it becomes very clear, most of a student's day is being consumed with school and homework. This leaves very minimal time to be spent with their family, leading to a weakened bond between children and their parents. “Giving students more homework is detrimental, there is almost no benefit to homework until senior high” (Wolchover). This means that homework is not helping it actually harming students. A major problem arising from the increase in homework is the decrease in family time. It has already been proven that it today’s world families spend less time together, add the time students spend on homework and we begin to see that families are being ripped apart by busy
Not only does homework help student but also it creates interaction between teens and parents. However, statics has shown that even though homework is a way to refresh what students have learned, it also create stress for students. Homework has shown its benefits for student but most of the time when student is given a homework it’s likely he/she will not do it. They believe it’s stressful,and when they can’t get the right answer, they gave up instantly instead of keep practicing. According to researchers, they believe that when student do more homework they get better grades and do well on the test/quizzes that were given. Even though homework has many advantage toward students, it also has disadvantage. Which include having too much homework and these things could lead to mental health issue toward students.
The first reason that homework is not helpful is that it limits students’ free time. Students look forward to school ending and being able to relax and enjoy themselves. As the seven hours counts down, they have the afternoon and evening to wait for. However, if they have homework that night, all of their plans are ruined. For all of the work that students do each day, they deserve time to relax. No matter what work students get, it’s really bad. It forces them to work longer, and possibly through the night, which leads me to my next point.
I believe, as a student, that homework is just a tool that teachers use to keep us busy. Being a student who has received homework for various years, I have found that homework causes me a lot of stress (Ethos). Homework causes kids to get very stressed out, it causes stress in their families, and studies show that it does not improve test scores. Harris Cooper, a worker at Duke University (Ethos), found out that, doing more than 60 to 90 minute of homework in middle school and more than 2 hours in high school is associated with much lower scores (Logos). The percentage reporting less than an hour of homework had risen from 41% to 57%. Loveless also found that 27% of 17-year-olds reported having no homework. The amount of homework given to students should decrease. The extensive amount of homework takes away family time that is necessary to child development. Also, stress that can can come with homework can cause health issues. The amount of homework given to students can cause students to cheat off students answers because they did not finish. Also, most of the homework that is assigned is not necessary in learning the material.
In The Battle 0ver Homework, Harris Cooper defines homework as, “tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried out during non-school hours” (27) Common homework assignments might include reading, writing, problems to solve, a school project, or other skills to be practiced. The purpose of homework is to assist in reinforcing what was taught in class. Sometimes the purpose is to gather extra information beyond what was taught that day. There are many teachers who don’t understand the meaning of homework and just give it as something to keep students busy. Homework should be given to students on a regular basis but only in reasonable amounts.
Late nights, eyes only kept open by ungodly amounts of coffee, and never ending piles of paper: these are all symptoms of the nation-sweeping homework epidemic. Students are assigned hours upon hours of after school homework every day — but is it really necessary? Oftentimes, homework causes more harm than good on the mental, physical, and social health of students; therefore, after school assignments should be limited to the four core classes, minimizing those loads as much as possible, because more homework does not necessarily lead to highly successful students, immense amounts of stress are put on students every day, and an eight hour school day should be enough to disseminate the information needed.
Heavy loads of homework can be shown more as harmful than good, not only for students but also for their families. As shown in Source B it says, “It is the primary arena in which children, parents and schools interact on a daily basis” (Gill and Schossman). Which I can totally disagree with from my experience, stating that every time I come from school to home, I always have to go straight to my room, turn my computer on, and either work on essays or have to search up problems for my algebra assignments, or just information for any class in general, which takes up a whole day of my life. Another reason is it is very time consuming! These homeworks are always getting in my way of either having activities after school or just time to spend with my family, which I hardly ever have a chance to do because of all the work I have, and might I also state that my mom is always worrying about my health since I usually don’t have time to eat too, also she is always asking me if I have time to read the bible with my siblings and father, which I automatically have to state I can’t because again of all this work. Another statement I have is how homework is mainly useless to our education, grabbing information from Source F, “Kids who wouldn’t dream of cheating on a test or copying a research paper think nothing of copying homework” (Chaika). Since doing homework is just such a waste for us we usually just copy it either from other people or from the internet, and since math class usually just gives a packet about what is going to be on the quiz, we end up using that to study which ends up being more helpful for the upcoming test rather than doing
High school students feel more stress than working adults, and children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative results can be improved by reducing the homework load.
To elaborate families have busy schedules like family reunions birthdays and funerals and kids don't have time to do homework.the effect is families won't be close as much before homework makes you tired and sleep and won't have there to hang out with family.to be sure home work would disrupt family business.
First of all,if students get homework then they going to stress out about it.This will lead to a big problem because then students will not enjoy their time back from school because they have homework.Students can not also enjoy their time with their family.Also students are wasting time on homework because after school is suppose to be a free time for students not a work time.This will affect the family because after a hard working day at school it suppose to be a family time where they can watch tv together
Students today are overwhelmed by the amount of homework they are doing. Schools are giving kids so much homework it's causing them to be stressed and lose sleep, lose their family and free time, and it's causing kids to have health problems.
Did you know that homework can be noneducational? Or even lead to students not being able to work? The first reason why homework is bad is because it can cause one to be extremely stressed. The second why homework is bad is because it can cause sleep deprivation. The third reason why homework is bad is because if the teacher is forcing the students to do lots of homework it will interfere with the students necessary free time.
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
It is a melancholy object to wander the halls of BB&N and see students half asleep, sluggishly meandering through the halls, trying to avoid other passersby. Or to see them scribbling through sheets of graph paper, finishing homework due in 10 minutes. I hear stories from other students in my grade of staying up until 3am, to study for multiple tests and finish other homework. One classmate, who takes an honors class and two AP classes, passed out at her computer at 2:30am, only to wake up at 5am and find out she hadn’t even gotten through the English reading. How can any of us focus in our classes the next day if we regularly stay up past midnight to finish our homework?
