When two people plan a crime together, they’re equally guilty regardless of who does more. The story is about two men who are name Dick and Perry who murdered the Clutter family from a book called In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote. It was a big deal because this was the most brutal murder everyone had ever done. The murder started at a small town of Holcomb, Kansas on November 15, 1959. The main conflict is that both men committed a murder by killing the Clutter family who they thought had a safe full of $10,000 cash inside. But truthfully the Clutter did not have a safe in their house. It made them …show more content…
Alvin Dewey was happy that they caught them since he’s been trying to catch these guys for a month. Later, the KBI were assigned to their suspects and interrogate them in separate rooms. Dewey was interrogating Smith and asking him all this questions about what happen. Smith tells him how it started. Perry Smith says that “The door was unlock. A side door. It took us into Mr. Clutter’s office” (Truman 236). This shows that Dick and Perry went inside to Mr. Clutter office, they were waiting in dark and looking for the safe but the safe was know where to be found. When they encounter Mr. Clutter, they took him to the office and ask him where the safe is. Mr. Clutter said that he didn’t have safe. It made Dick yelled at him and had a knife towards Mr. Clutter. Mr. Clutter gave them money that was about thirty dollars but they wanted more so they went upstairs to see who is awake. Mrs. Clutter keep saying that they don’t have a safe at all and saying that Mr. Clutter was telling the truth. Then Perry told Dick that your friend Floyd Wells lied to you about the safe. But Dick was too ashamed so he decided to tie them to their bed. After the KBI had interrogate them and they found their story to be similar but there was one information that was told differently. In the book In Cold Blood it says that “The only serious discrepancy being that Hickock attributed all four deaths to Smith, while Smith contended that Hickock had killed the two women” (Truman 245). This shows that both of Dick and Perry blamed on each other for the crime they committed to the KBI. Dewey could not forget the suffering they been through. He hoped to see them
On November 15th, 1959, Herbert Clutter and three of his family were murdered in Holcomb, Kansas. At first, the killers were unknown, and the neighborhood suspected each other because they were terrified that the killers could be among one of the people living in Holcomb. So, the KBI was asked to solve this mission even though they were struggle a lot with finding who were the real killers. Nevertheless, eventually, the KBI had found two murders who were known as Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. After a long period of trials from the quan tòa, the two killers were sentenced to death.
Capote used evidence he gathered himself from the investigation and also evidence that he got from others who were also heavily involved, including townspeople and investigators. During the investigation, Dick and Perry go through the murders, including what led up to it and everything that happened inside the Clutter family’s house, “He was counting the money in Mr. Clutter’s billfold. It was about thirty dollars. He threw the billfold on the bed and told him, ‘You’ve got more money in this house than that. A rich man like you.
Part three of In Cold Blood uses foreshadowing and strong, pathos diction to create a sense of finality in the chase for the elusive murders. Dewey displays a foil exemplifying relief and finality when he tells his boy, “Pauly, you remember those two fellows we've been looking for? Well, now we know where they are, and Daddy's going to go get them and bring them here to Garden City.” In these two sentences the diction he uses is light-hearted and jovial, letting the audience exhale in this moment of final relief. Dewey is also the center of a foil when in his dream of the two men in the diner he saw the two murderers in a café, ‘‘Sharing the table were two young men, and Dewey, recognizing them, nudged Agent Duntz. ‘Look.’ ‘Where?’ ‘The corner.’
In Cold Blood is a true story based on two men, Dick and Perry. The two of them had very serious psychological issues, with Dick being a psychopath and Perry being a sociopath. Dick and Perry served time in prison together, which is where Dick heard about the Clutter family and that’s where he created the whole plan to murder them.
The KBI, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, was given the information that would eventually solve the Clutter case, by a man named Floyd Wells. Wells was listening to the radio one evening when he heard about the quadruple homicide, and he vaguely recalled an incident that had occurred a few months prior. The informant, is a prisoner in the Kansas State Penitentiary, who was cellmates with a man named Richard Hitchcock. Wells recalled that the two convicts were conversing one evening about their lives before prison. Floyd informed Dick that he once worked for Herb Clutter. He went on talking about how wealthy his former employer was, his ranch, and a safe in his office that contained $10,000 dollars. Hitchcock seemed to be fascinated by Mr.Clutter
After the murder a group of Mr. Clutter's old friends go to the house and help clean up. The KBI starts to investigate the murders, a man named Alvin Dewey is in charge. He has absolutely no clues except for one footprint and a radio that went missing. He does not know the motive but suspects there was more than one murderer and that they were close to the Clutter family. All four of the Clutters were tied down and shot, Mr. Clutter's throat was slit as well, Nancy and Mrs. Clutter were shot in their own beds. Paranoia is rapidly spreading through Holcomb and everyone is suspecting everyone else. Dick and Perry are in the town of Olathe eating dinner, Perry has almost no appetite and is very anxious that they are going to get caught.
Although Perry commits a ghastly offense he still contains another compassionate side to him, Capote’s importance is to tell readers Perry can be sweet too, therefore; he contends even though a person commits a crime doesn’t mean they are inferior.
Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are two remarkably different characters. In the beginning of the novel, they’re known only as the murders of the Clutter family, but Truman Capote tells their life stories in such a way that they become more than that. Even though these two men are basically introduced as murderers, they quickly become relatable and interesting characters. So much is learned about their feelings and lives that one can not help but almost look past their reckless ways. Both of these men have unique character traits that amalgamate in an intriguing way. Throughout In Cold Blood, Capote includes many instances that show how Dick and Perry, when combined, make the perfect murderer.
We see two heartless, cold blooded killers that slain the innocent family of the Clutters with the intent to leave no witnesses and to rob them of their hard earned money but Capote deceives the reader's emotions throughout the entirety of the book to humanize straight killers and make them likable. We often see a murderer as a psychopath without any emotion but it is hard to label Smith and Hickock one because Capote brings the reader into their lives in a way that we would feel sorry and have pity for them. Capote makes the reader relate to Smith and Hickock by describing their families and showing insight into the killers’ dreams and aspirations so we could perceive them as people and forget that they ended the future of the Clutters. Perry was a lonely child growing up and had a drunkard mother that forced him into foster care where he was abused and bullied

Capote expresses his idea of nature vs. nurture in Dick Hickock and Perry Smith and whether killers are born or made. With this in mind, he writes, “Dick became convinced that Perry was a rarity, ‘a natural born killer,’— absolutely sane but conscienceless, and capable of dealing with or without motive, the coldest-blooded deathblows” (205). This makes apparent Perry’s instincts to kill and Dick’s desire to manipulate Perry’s instincts to do so. Dick uses Perry as an image of who he wants to be, even though Perry feels shame and embarrassment. Capote inspects their motivations for the killings based on their backgrounds.
In Cold Blood, written by Truman Capote, is a book that encloses the true story of a family, the Clutters, whose lives were brutally ended by the barrel of a 12-gauge shotgun. The killers were 2 men, each with 2 different backgrounds and personalities, each with his own reasons to take part in such a harrowing deed. Capote illustrates the events leading up to the murder in sharp detail and describes its aftermath with such a perspective that one feels that he is right there with the culprits, whose names are Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. They had very critical roles in the murder and how they themselves were caught, and in many ways they were foils for one another. Through Capote's extensive descriptions
For centuries, men and women have murdered each other for greed, lust, revenge, etc. However, in 1959, Truman Capote traveled to Holcomb, Kansas to discover the other side of murder. Truman Capote, author of In Cold Blood, offers a close examination of the horrid murder of the Clutter family. He explored how two men of different backgrounds, ethnicities, and personalities joined together to kill an innocent family for riches. Capote provides different points of view through each of his character’s eyes for his readers’ better understanding of the murderers. The use of juxtaposition compares and contrasts Dick to Perry, the murders. Capote succeeds with using juxtaposition to reveal the murderer's how he perceived them.
Although Dick and Perry may both be killers, Capote uses language to portray Perry as a victim of Dick;therefore, Perry is seen through the eyes of the reader as an innocent man who was simply taken advantage of and molded into a killer by Dick.
In the book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, the Clutter family is murdered with apparently no motive and the killers leave almost no evidence. In order to figure out who the killers are, the KBI, or Kansas Bureau of Investigations, follows an order of operations. First, they look for physical evidence at the scene of the crime; then they talk to people who knew the Clutters and/or lived near them at the time of the murders; next, they take tips called in by various citizens; and finally, they systematically track down and interview anyone who had ever been employed by the Clutter family. By doing all these things, the KBI tracked down the killers and apprehended them in the end.
