Why Is Charlie Gordon In Flowers For Algernon

For being such intelligent doctors they should have known better than to put him through the surgery knowing all the risks. Charlie should not have gone through the experiment even though it was a major brake through for science. The doctors who performed the surgery were being very selfish when they decided to use Charlie for the experiment. Because of this experiment Charlie has lost all of his friends and his job and his feeling for miss.kinnian have grown rapidly just to get shot down.

Imagine being three times smarter than you already are through a simple, painless surgery, but there’s a catch. The effects of the surgery that can make you a genius could be temporary, and have not been studied and may be dangerous. Flowers for Algernon, a short story, describes a character who is intellectually disabled. He has to make a choice between having doctors conduct an experiment that involves surgery on him to make him three times smarter or staying the way he is. Charlie Gordon should not have the surgery because it is highly experimental and theoretical, as well as the negative social effects.

Ever since he was a boy, his life goals were to be smart, have friends, and be respected. All of this was hard for him, as he only had an IQ of sixty eight, so he agreed to an A.I. surgery that would hopefully triple his IQ. Charlie Gordon’s life was much better and easier after the A.I. surgery. After the operation Charlie finally had an imagination, experienced adult emotions, and had a second chance to contribute to the real world and science.

However, that's still not acceptable for doctors to do, especially with experimenting certain tests and operations on the patient. Also, Doctor Nemur and Strauss did proceed with the operation, but later gave him an unstable limbic system and failure in the nervous system. Which shows that the doctors weren't thinking of any future conflicts that would put Charlie in a harmful state of mind. They also kept Algernon dying confidential to Charlie since they both got the same operation, and the doctors weren't thinking ethically if they couldn't even share it to Charlie (Dobrin). Overall, Doctor Nemur and Strauss did motivate him to start making himself smart again in the end, but they should've thought about future conflicts that the operation would put on Charlie that would effect his mental health.

Charlie shouldn’t have had the surgery because it was dangerous. To begin with, the doctors didn’t even know what all would happen with the surgery, which is dangerous. They only knew that the surgery should triple IQ, and it could ware off. The surgery killed Algernon, which is obviously a sign of danger. The surgery could’ve been dangerous to the rest of the world if Charlie’s smarts would’ve reached to the outside world more.

Charlie had two key things, which is why the doctors chose Charlie. The two key things were Charlie's motivation and Miss Kinnian. Miss Kinnian could teach Charlie after the operation, and the doctors Charlie's motivation showed that Charlie really wanted the operation. The doctors chose Charlie, without considering the benefits and harms for him, but only of those key things. The doctors only saw benefits for themselves.

With an IQ of sixty-eight, the scientists altered him and tripled his IQ. However, this operation has not been ethical because the procedure was abstruse to Charlie, the doctors were rushing, and Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss were acting selfishly.
