Bill Cosby was born on July 12, 1937. He is an author, stand up comedian, and has had much success with his acting career. If a random person in the United States were to be asked who Bill Cosby is, however, their first reaction may not be simply the formerly described actor. Although Cosby is and has done all those things, he has also obtained the status of being a man who has sexually assaulted more than 50 women throughout his lifetime (Loannou). The first person to accuse Cosby was Andrea Constand back in 2005, stating that Cosby touched Constand sexually and without warning. Constand recalls a time where Cosby gave her some pills and wine that left her feeling as though she couldn't move. Cosby then began to grope Constand's body whilst touching his own genitals. Constand remembers waking up the next morning with her clothes rumpled and her bra unfastened. "The next month Constand filed a lawsuit claiming battery, sexual assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress and other claims. The case was settled in March 2006 after months of depositions that would come back to haunt Cosby” (Ginberg). Barbara Bowman was the second and a largely known figure in the Cosby scandal. The scarlet letter, also the title of the novel, is an important symbol throughout the book. The letter quite obviously represented the adultery Hester had committed. It also served as an outwardly public reminder to herself and the townspeople of what she had done. Because Hester was sentenced this punishment for the entirety of her lifetime, it quickly became apart of her identity. Hester’s community gained value in shunning her by forcing her to wear the letter “A” so others would not make the same mistake. Hester was used as an example for others as she felt shame for her
