“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his view …until you climb into his skin and walk around it” quoted by Harper Lee introduces Atticus Finch as one of the most steadfast honest and moral character in the novel “To Kill a Mocking Bird”. He is depicted in the novel as a very efficient lawyer with the qualities of being fair, by not holding grudges and by also considering situations from different perspectives. More than a lawyer he is also described as a very understanding and loving father. Your wealth or race does not make you a human but your kindness and positive attitude is what makes a living thing a real human and Atticus has been described as a human with a great personality which provoked me in choosing him as my subject for this essay. I admire this character not only because of his great qualities but also because I intend to be a skilled lawyer like him one day and I believe his …show more content…
In chapter three Atticus explains Scout to stand in another person’s shoe and view things from his or her point of view. He explained that if she could do this her first day of school might have not went wrong or the situation could have been made better. Another case of Atticus restating his point about seeing things from someone else’s perspective is when Jem makes a snowman to look like Mr. Avery in chapter 8. Jem is very proud of his creation and considers himself in a perspective of a great artist while Atticus sees it from the neighbor’s shoes who might be offended to see his caricature made out of muddy snow. This shows how Atticus is always considerate and understanding of everyone, perhaps an aspect to him which makes him such a great
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it,” (Lee 30). This opinion was unpopular during the time of racism, but not to Atticus Finch. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces a character named Atticus. Throughout the novel he tries to understand people by the way they look at things. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Atticus Finch is proven to be a caring, courageous, and trusting person.
The book To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, has many characters who demonstrate a variety of good traits. One of these characters is known for his moral character. This character is a poor lawyer named Atticus Finch. The character Atticus Finch embodies the qualities of understanding, humility, and integrity in a time when many lacked a good moral compass. All of these characteristics are shown in a variety of ways.
Undoubtedly, one of the most controversial subjects in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, would be whether or not Atticus Finch should have defended Tom Robinson. However, in order to understand this controversy, a person must first be able to understand Atticus Finch himself. Atticus as a character is a very intellectual person who possesses the fortitude to stand up for whatever he believes is right and will not let other people’s choices affect his own. Furthermore, it is also important to understand that Atticus is not a racist, nor does he approve of the idea that one group of people are better than another based on their appearances in general, and because of this, a person can generalize that Atticus’s characteristic traits are why he did not complain when given the task of defending a black man, Tom Robinson, who had been wrongfully accused of raping a white woman. A man that he, as well as a small group of other people from town, viewed as the picture of innocence. In their eyes, Tom was no more than a mockingbird, “[and mockingbirds] don’t do one thing but make music for [people] to enjoy” (Lee 119). Knowing this, anyone with a reasonably strong sense of what is right and what is wrong can conclude that it does make sense for Atticus Finch to have taken the case due to his belief that it is a sin to kill the innocent as well as his courage that allows him to stay true to his ideas, even though when taking the case, he was inevitably going to be putting his
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a prominent character throughout the book. He will always do what he believes is the right thing to do, no matter what the consequence. Despite the long held feelings of his community, Atticus stands as a sterling example of a man of principle who is willing to practice his moral values. I will address my thesis in multiple parts.
Many people have some role model in their life. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, a lawyer named Atticus Finch displays a true role model to all in Macomb County. In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee portrays the real role model that all should recognize and desire to follow. When in the courtroom or with his family, Atticus Finch resembles a good-natured man by heart. With his self-sacrificing nature, Atticus shows Macomb county residents what it means to give wholeheartedly to others despite who they are. Along with his self-sacrificing nature, Atticus displays a peaceful attitude despite any difficult circumstances he may face in his daily life. Finally, Atticus shows Macomb county how to think with a positive mindset. Weather
The book we read in class, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, has a very interesting character named Atticus. He is a very intelligent lawyer who takes a case to defend a black man. This man’s name was Tom Robinson and he supposably raped a young woman named Mayella Ewell. Her father, Bob, is a drunk and has a tendency to beat his children. The amount of racism in Maycomb county makes it nearly impossible to defend a black man against two white people, buf Atticus still tries. In doing so, he upsets Bob Ewell and he targets his children to harm them as payback. Many people say Atticus made a mistake when taking the case because he put his own children in danger but he was just doing things for the greater good, plus no one really got hurt. I think that it makes sense for Atticus to have defended Tom Robinson despite the dangers and risks it came it with because he just wants to
First, Atticus Finch is a genuine, moral literary character because he knows that you must understand a person and know them before you can judge them. "Scout," said Atticus, "when summer comes you'll have to keep your head about far worse things... it's not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down—well, all I can say is, when you and Jem are grown, maybe you'll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn't let you down." (ch.11 pg.120) Atticus tries to explain to Scout the importance of understanding someone and getting to know the person before she does things. Atticus can take time to know a person, watching their actions, and seeing how they act. He then understands them and their position better than before, which can help him to better comprehend and
Sometimes it’s hard to understand why people say or do the things that they do. It can also be hard to consider their viewpoint based off of the natural prejudice and bias each of us has installed in ourselves. From birth, we are indirectly told how to feel and view other people. Throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, we are exposed to a father during the 1930’s, Atticus Finch, who spends time trying to teach his children about walking in another person’s shoes. Walking in another person’s shoes is an important concept and lesson for many to learn and understand.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view— until you climb in his skin and walk around in it,” says Atticus Finch. This iconic quote from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird highlights the compassion for others that shows up several times in the story. Empathy is a prevalent theme in To Kill a Mockingbird and is displayed by several characters. Atticus Finch is one of the most compassionate characters. He sets an example for his kids, who also learn to empathize. Several other characters besides the Finch family show compassion for each other. The title of the novel itself symbolizes empathy for the innocent and accentuates the role of compassion in this novel.
Atticus was a good father. He protected his children against anything. He lost his wife when Scout, his younger daughter was very young, and the children had to grow up without a mother. Atticus Finch did his best to keep the children happy, though he couldn’t play football with Jem as the other fathers did. The one thing he was adamant about, was getting Scout and Jem their coveted air rifles. Everyone agrees that Scout was a girl. Some say Atticus should have given her a gun, while others say he shouldn’t have. Atticus should have given Scout a gun for these three reasons; to use in self-defense, to satisfy her longing, and to learn responsibility.
In recent literary history, perhaps the strongest contender for the one character that has had the greatest influence on a generation is Atticus Finch, father of the protagonist in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Both as a father, and a lawyer, he has served, and still today serves as a pillar of righteousness and morality. The ability for his morality to translate to all people, across ages, races, and cultures, is a feat preformed by Harper Lee in her masterpiece, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. She establishes Atticus Finch as the moral center of the novel by juxtaposing his actions and the relationships with those of the majority of Maycomb. In doing so, she has made him a cultural, and oftentimes personal icon.
All the symptoms that are associated with end of life care are of great concern. They all in one way or another affect the quality of life of the patient undergoing that journey. I would have to say that to me dyspnea would be of the most bothersome. I think of the instances where perhaps you may be choking on food, having an asthma attack, or any other situation which can lead you to be short of breath for a short period of time and reflect back on how uncomfortable and anxious you feel at that moment and apply it to attempt to form a picture of how the patient may feel undergoing this problem for an extended amount of time. Not only does being short of breath increase anxiety, but it also affects so many other aspects, such as not being able
Just like his career as a lawyer, Atticus shows us that his perspective on others is “innocent until proven guilty.” He likes to see the best in people at all times, that is until they do a distasteful act to tarnish this view. Atticus believes in this because people never know what another person’s circumstance is. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (Lee, pg. 39) Atticus really understands and believes what he is saying, he represents that when he restates this principle in a way he know Scout can understand it, by saying “climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Showing that he understands Scout’s point of view while he is saying this statement. What Harper Lee is trying to tell us here is just what it is telling you, people have reasons for doing what they do most of the time, so try not to judge them right away, you never know their reasoning.
Atticus Finch is widely regarded as one of the most influential characters in modern literature. His pivotal role in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee exemplifies this influence and demonstrates his positive effect on his children, Jem and Scout. Throughout the novel, Atticus leads by example and provides lessons and teachings for his children to follow. His wisdom proves to be an instrumental part in the maturation and development of his children, and helps them to grow, learn, and adapt to the changing world around them. Atticus Finch teaches his children important lessons by forcing Jem read to Mrs. Dubose, remaining pacifistic, and defending Tom Robinson; therefore, he is a beneficial father and role model for his children.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents Atticus Finch as a principled lawyer, committed but single father to Scout and Jem, and a law-abiding citizen. Atticus is a respectable gentleman in society and a role model for his children. Throughout the book we see evidence of his honorable intentions, though he doesn’t seem to reap the rewards. He is morally upstanding, even-keeled, and daring. Because of these things, Atticus is a man who deserves great respect and admiration.
