Everyday, at least 274,000 animals are tortured worldwide; that is about one hundred million a year. Ever since animal testing was first performed for biomedical research by Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) it has sparked up much controversy. There are many that believe animal testing is abuse and evil, and there are many authoritative organizations that dedicate every day to fight for animal rights. For example PETA, The Humane of the United States and Cruelty Free International. Although, there is another side that believes that animal testing is important because it can contribute to finding cures and making sure vaccines or beauty products are safe for humans. In Animal Testing 101, PETA says, “Examples of animal tests include forcing mice and rats to inhale toxic fumes, force-feeding dogs pesticides, and dripping corrosive chemicals into rabbits’ sensitive eyes.” This proves that animals are being tortured and being treated like they are objects, not living things. In About Animal Testing, Humane Society International says, “Here is a selection of common animal procedures: Forced chemical exposure in toxicity testing, which can include oral force-feeding, forced inhalation, skin or injection into the abdomen, muscle, etc. Exposure to drugs, chemicals or infectious disease at levels that cause illness, pain and distress, or death. Genetic manipulation, e.g., addition or “knocking out” of one or more genes.” This evidence proves that animals are being severely harmed in testing labs around the world. According to Live Science, “A 2008 study in the journal Alternatives to Laboratory Animals showed that more than 80 HIV/AIDS vaccines successful in nonhuman primates failed in human trials.” This proves that animal testing not always accurate. According to Northern Star, “One example is the failure of animal testing with the drug thalidomide that happened in the 1960s. According to the organization ‘Animal Friends Croatia,’ scientists had created thalidomide to help stop morning sickness for pregnant women. Even though it was tested on many species of animals before it could be purchased, ‘it caused an estimated 10,000 birth defects and thousands of fetal deaths worldwide.’ Many of the babies suffered from phocomelia, a disease that does not allow their limbs to develop correctly.” This shows that animal testing can result in failure and that can sometimes become fatal.
