Why Is Abortion Ethically Wrong

If you were to look up the definition of abortion online, your results would be something along the lines of “the deliberate termination of pregnancy.” It is estimated that one in three women will have an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45. Some of these women will end up having multiple abortions. Over half of all abortions are due to unintended pregnancies and abortion being used as a form of birth control. 88.6% of abortions are done in the first trimester, 10.2% in the second trimester, and 1.1% in the third trimester. In 2011, the state of California was the number one state in total abortions, having reached 181,730 abortions in a year. Abortion has been a part of our culture and is a very controversial topic because of its history, procedures, and questionable moral values.

Merriam-Webster defines abortion is defined as the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. Quite predictably, abortion has been one of the most heavily debated topics of our generation and will likely continue to be for the foreseeable future. Abortion is now legal in the United States because of the Supreme Court case of Roe vs. Wade. There are several different opinions on whether it is morally permissible to terminate a pregnancy, ranging from abortion at all stages is immoral to abortion is moral only before the 20th week of pregnancy. In my opinion, American moral philosopher Judith Jarvis Thomson has one of the best stances on abortion.

Ever since the case of Roe v. Wade in 1973, abortion has been one of the most contentious issues in our society. In some cases people think abortion is murder, in others, it’s reasonable for some cases. Then there are people who use it just to take advantage of it. The legal stance of abortion is a hot topic in today’s society.

Currently, with the Texas Senate Bill 5 declaring unconstitutional, there are fewer rules on abortion. However, many women cannot have abortions due to procedural and procedural restrictions.

Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in society. Many people believe it is immoral while others believe it is a personal decision. An abortion is the “removal of of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy” (dictionary.com). On January 22, 1973, the U.S Supreme Court declared abortion legal due to the landmark Roe v. Wade court case (OBOS Abortion Contributors). The Supreme Court declared that women have a right to have abortions under the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.

Tietze used New York City as a basis for his study and the data he used was based off of estimates for the first two years after abortion was legalized (Tietze, 1975). “According to the author’s estimate, about 70 percent of the legal abortions (50,000 per year) obtained by New York City residents during the first two years under the new law replaced illegal procedures” (Tietze, 1975, p. 123). The estimate implies that the total number of induced abortions, legal and illegal, increased about 40 percent (Tietze, 1975). The number of live births in New York City declined by 25 percent and, Tietze’s (1975) study estimated the increased number of legal abortions were responsible for about half of the decline in births.

How would you feel if your life were to be taken away without a choice? It’s unfair and unjust to end the life of any innocent human being. Babies have no say in whether they get to choose a future for themselves. Every person deserves their right to live, and no one should have the ability to take that right away. Abortion is harmful and wrong because it is immoral to kill an innocent human being, carries out many risks that affect the mother’s health physically and mentally, and is selfish for many reasons.

Abortion is the ending of a human pregnancy. Most women choose to have an abortion because they think that they are not ready to be a mother. They think the best way to get rid of their baby is the best way to get rid of their unborn child, but there are always other choices. Just because something is legal, it doesn't make it right to do. Abortion should be illegal, because: it is the same as killing someone, it's better to give a baby up for adoption instead of taking his/her life, the baby is innocent and is not responsible for others actions, and due to the fact that most females regret having an abortion and require psychological help afterwards.

The practice of abortion has been around since the beginning of time we have evidence of abortions performed as early as 1550 BC by Egyptians. At this time abortion was a respected choice and a normal thing for a woman to do. The practice of performing abortions spread rapidly and eventually America adopted this practice too. Women could freely get an abortion until the early 1800s, at this time people began to question if abortions were morally right. In 1821 Connecticut became the first state to oppose abortions

Abortion has always been a strong topic for me, my family has dealt with that situation of deciding whether my cousin should get an abortion or not. I strongly believe that abortion is wrong and I am against it. I have had to research both sides and have come to understand that women suffer a lot and don't know what to do so they come to the conclusion of thinking that abortion is the only choice for them. Although it is allowed in many states, I personally think that abortion is not the last or only choice. There are many other options for mothers that do not wish to keep the child.

Abortion is a procedure performed when a mother wants to dispose/ kill the baby. This procedure can be done at any stage of pregnancy. The procedures are not only immoral but also brutal. Abortion is wrong and needs to be stopped.

It all comes down to it being moral or immoral and what you yourself think.
