What is so special about 1776? You may wonder why I want to write about 1776. There is no special reason. I do a Google search for 1776 on impulse, and find out something interesting about 1776. The first thing is that the year 1776 was a leap year. 1776 started on a Monday. 1776 is a year of great importance to the Americans, since The Declaration of Independence was written and declared in 1776. 1776 is also the title of a famous Broadway musical. It ran for more than 1200 performances in 1969. This famous Broadway musical was made into a film in 1972. The title of the film is 1776. The musical and film were not based strictly on history. Some parts were fictionalized. It is so surprisingly that a random act of checking
1776 started off in Britain, giving a background of King George III and the start of the war. Then the book moved to the Siege of Boston in America. In the siege of Boston an account of both militaries moves and living routines were given leading up to the Continental Army taking Dorchester Heights. This forced the British to evacuate because Washington had sent for cannons and on Dorchester heights was close enough for deadly fire on Boston. From Boston, Washington left a small group, but the rest of his troops moved to New York; which was the British’s next target. At New York the battle of Brooklyn was disastrous for the Continental Army. Afterwards the British moved ships into the Hudson and unleashed the remainder of Washington’s troops who had yet to retreat. When they fled to New Jersey the Continental Army was once again bested. Soon after a brutal loss at Fort Washington was inflicted. Thousands of troops were captured because there were too many in the fort to defend effectively when they had to fallback. Finally Washington made a brilliant strike in the Battle Trenton that gave the Continental Army the momentum it so dearly needed.
The film 1776, directed by Peter H Hunt, produced by Columbia Pictures, and starring actors such as William Daniels, Howard Da Silva, Ken Howard, and more is a comedic and musical retelling of the events and struggles occurring in congress leading up to the declaration of the USA’s independence from Britain. The film takes place during 1776 in Philadelphia, mostly within the Carpenter’s Hall where the Second Continental Congress was held. While it only took place within Philadelphia, it was able to present the attitudes of the different colonies through the delegates.
David McCullough’s novel 1776 is a compelling story of America’s war for independence. We have all read chapters and heard the related history of the war of 1776, but David McCullough takes the epic story even further. The book covers the entire year of 1776 from the beginning of the war until the end. The author provides an extremely detailed description of both sides of the conflict both American and British. David McCullough is a renowned author and historian and has twice won the Pulitzer Prize for two of his novels; John Adams and Truman, and with reading 1776 you can see exactly why he is so celebrated. His
McCullough's book 1776. But after all research and reading I found that the thesis is that the year 1776 was the most important and valuable year in American History. He uses the battles and the primary and secondary sources to tell you but he doesn’t make it clear. This is why he goes into such a descriptive detail when it comes to the battles and the camps and training. He uses those examples and battles to tell us home important it was because if he didn’t we would still be close minded about the war and battles. We won and we lost but men still died trying to get us the freedom we deserve, and getting us to where we are in history. I have learned more about the Revolutionary Era in this book than I have ever learned in textbooks. We learn about the true meaning of the battles and he goes into talk about the concentration camps and the training camps. Mainly what is neat about this book is he has letters and journals from this time period and gets you to have a better perspective on how the soldiers’ lives were and how they would send letters back and forth to their wives but they couldn’t tell them the really important stuff. He also displays both the Patriot and the British sides of the different battles and war. He became bias when it came down to him discussing the Patriots and Great Britain. He leaned more towards the Patriots than he did the British. He also highlighted
Within Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda brings history back into the present through his musical. Originally performed at The Public Theater in 2015, the musical was quickly a popular hit and made its way to Broadway. Now performed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Hamilton has won 11 Tony awards and multiple honors. Director Thomas Kail and lead producer Jeffrey Seller made many of the final decisions of the production, and through them Miranda’s time and investments, the musical became a success. Now, the musical functions as a public history as it revives the importance of the past, as well as redefines the ways history is made and learned through the integration of rap and hip-hop style in musical theatre.
The document signed July 4th, 1776 was the most important document ever written in the United States of America. The Declaration of Independence is exactly that, Thomas Jefferson along with the Committee of Five came together to write the document for freedom and independence. The Patriots were serious and as the colonies together would not back down to King George who betrayed and treated them with treason and abandonment. This document changed the entire nature of the revolution in more ways than one. Without the Declaration we would’ve been under British rule longer and would have suffered the treason and abuse of the King of England.
From the late 1760s to July 4,1776, American colonists moved from merely protesting the decisions of King and Parliament to a Declaration of Independence and a Revolutionary War to overthrow that authority.
On February 17, 2015, the world of Broadway and musical theatre was introduced to Hamilton: An American Musical written by the young composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Hamilton is a musical, based on the book Alexander Hamilton written by Ron Chernow, which tells the story of the life and the tragedies of founding father Alexander Hamilton. This musical uses various styles of rap, hip-hop and R&B music that remain foreign genres when it comes to the average show tune that is heard (Piepenburg 1). Bringing in about 30 million dollars at the box-office and rising, Hamilton is right behind other blockbuster musicals such as Wicked and The Lion King for the title of one of the highest-grossing shows currently on Broadway (3).
Tickets to see Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway are sold out until mid-2017 and prices for a ticket reach up to $1,000. The hip-hopera sensation is sweeping the nation, from old people to children alike. “It is the story of America then told by America now,” explains its writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show brings up current topics set in old settings and makes them new again. One would hardly think a hip hop musical about a founding father would be something to be considered worthy of literary merit, but I would go as far to say that Hamilton is just as worthy as The Color Purple and Invisible Man. It combines the old with the new, is written very intelligently, brings the story to life, sharpens the audience’s awareness of life,

The American Revolution, which occurred approximately from 1765 to 1786, is also known as the American Revolutionary War and the U.S. War of Independence, for good reason. The conflict rose from rising tensions amid the people of Great Britain’s thirteen American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. Clashes between Britain’s troops and colonial militiamen in Lexington and Concord in April 1775 kicked off the armed conflict, and by the following summer, the rebels were waging a full-scale war for their independence. The American Revolution had tremendous consequences, and was not simply a victory of arms on the battlefield, but also a feat of economic and political ideals, and vital societal changes. This huge period of history set into motion greater changes in American life and created a country, demonstrating just how this revolutionary age in time more than earned its name. This battle of independence waged by the American colonies against Britain influenced political ideas and revolutions around the globe, as a young, largely divided nation won its freedom from the greatest military force of its time.
There are few shows in the history of Broadway and musical theatre that can claim to have ever had the popularity and mass intrigue as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash hit, historical musical Hamilton. The two-hour rap based musical tells the story of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton from his immigration to New York to rise in power amongst the first presidential cabinet and ultimate death at the hands of a former ally. Gaining support from celebrities and President Obama only furthered the popularity of the musical that continues to boast being sold out over a year in advance.
1776 is a film about the path to American independence. Specifically the actions and conversations that the continental congress took part in. John Adams is the first character that is introduced in the movie. He has proposed the Idea of American independence before the congress 23 times and has been rejected every time because Adams is perceived as obnoxious and disliked within the congress. Adams goes to Benjamin Franklin for help getting congress to listen to him and Franklin suggests that they get Richard Henry Lee to propose Independence instead of Adams, because the congressmen like Lee more than Adams. Richard Lee then proceeds to go to his home colony of Virginia to get approval for the resolution. Lee comes back to Philadelphia

The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, the nation’s most cherished symbol of independence, that same year on July 4. With education systems not going in depth of the year 1776, this paper is to show how this book has revealed so much of our country’s history in one year.
