In 1994, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first GMO, Flavr Savr tomato, for sale on grocery store shelves. Uninformed, the people continued buying and consuming the “normal” grocery store products. However, as the number of GMOs in markets increased, the world noticed a higher number of cancers, food allergies, and antibiotic resistances. One reason for creating GM crops is due to the fact that big corporations gain huge profit. Franken-Fears: An Analysis of Chapter 6 in The Book “The Food Police” Chapter 6, titled Franken-Fears, in the book, “The Food Police”, discusses the hot button topic of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, and how they play an integral role in feeding the world. If one were to google “Genetically Modified Organisms”, they would immediately see that about half of the articles are vehemently against the use of GMOs and about half are enthusiastically supporting the use of GMOs. It is quite difficult to sift through all the so called “facts”, so Jayson Lusk comprised a whole chapter dedicated to the real facts about GMOs.

Professor Richard Lewotin said “An ecosystem, you can always intervene and change something in it, but there is no way of knowing what all the downstream effects will be or how it will affect the environment.” Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are not healthy and they shouldn’t be put in our food. Our nation does not know the full extent of GMOs. GMOs are used in almost all of our food, and for the most part there are no regulations for these GMOs that food companies are using now a days. They have been used for years without telling us the full background and side effects they could have. As a nation we need to take the right step in learning the facts about them and making our food truly healthy. GMOs should be made illegal due to the fact that studies have shown them to be unsafe and harmful to consume.

GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. The GMO debate has a huge gap just like the climate change’s ambiguous debate. Some people are for the consumption of it and have as arguments that GMOs will feed the future population of the world that is expected to double in the few years to come, or that scientists can build stronger crops that resist to pests, therefore less use of pesticides. Some are against these ideas because they think that GMOs represent a threat to the environment and that they can cause a lot of health problems. The goal of this paper is to look at two articles “The GMO Debate is Over Again” by Mark Lynas and" Seeds of Evil: Monsanto and Genetic Engineering" by Dr. Joseph Mercola, and see where the use rhetorical strategies are effective and where they are not.

Over the past few decades a new controversy has arisen in the scientific community: should Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) be used in modern society. There are generally two sides to this debate: one being in favor of GMO use and the other against it. Pro GMO activists believe that GMOs can help address hunger issues and help reduce use of pesticides/insecticides while Anti-GMO activists state that it is a threat to the agriculture industry, and should be banned. Both sides have several valid points, however GMO’s are even more complicated from initial glance, and may not be as dangerous as some believe.

I believe that the government should remove GMO’s and all genetically modified products off the market. A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering. Even though they are beneficial, they cause a lot of bad side effects. Some of the effects are harmful to environment and to human beings. The effects of GMOs can affect us long term if we don’t handle it now. I believe that GMOs were created for one reason which is to profit agriculture businesses. It 's not for the benefit of the consumer at all. Corporate business influence of the food supply that we eat is frightening.

Imagine a farm that produces all sorts of vegetables and fruits. Now imagine a little child about five years old with a food allergy of some sort. She is running out onto that farm wanting to eat a juicy apple but little did she know that this was a farm that produces genetically modified plants. They recently they manipulated all of the apples to have the food she has an allergy to in the apples so that they don't go bad as fast. She is all alone and she sees a perfect apple and she takes a bite and she is having an allergic reaction and she is having a hard time breathing. Her mom comes to find her and sees her struggling to breath on the ground this would be a devastating scenario, So this is why GMO is a No so we can protect people.

When it comes to the topic of whether Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO) are safe or not, most of us will readily agree that it has become an issue. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is it really safe to consume them. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are safe and improve the production of crops, others maintain that GMOs are not safe and should be eradicated. I disagree that GMOs are safe for human consumption because as a recent research has shown they can cause severe organ damage and fatal diseases. GMOs should be banned and remove from all food sources until they are proved safe for consumption.

The evaluation of research and studies was conducted in order to assess possible liberal bias in the media. Through consideration of studies within the past twenty years, certain implications and causes of media bias are addressed and explained. As there are multiple viewpoints surrounding media bias, many stances are observed. Media bias is justified through a matter of diversity, party affiliation, liberal expectations, and varying definitions of bias. The results of these studies show that while media bias may exist, it not significant. It is also found true that most journalists have left sided beliefs, but tend to claim moderate. The negative reputation of bias is ultimately defended, and it is found that this bias can be considered positive in some aspects.

Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their

farmers, and the reduced use of herbicides and pesticides. It is a completely different method

Most food allergies are protein based, like people allergic to nuts, milk, or shellfish. Since genetic engineering is based on proteins, most people assume GMOs will cause all kinds of foreign allergies. According to XiaoZhi Lim, writer for the Genetic Literacy Project, "Three main tests are conducted to ensure that any new proteins from GM foods do not cause allergies: in vitro test, in silico test and digestion." These three rigorous tests keep any dangerous GM products off of the market. Besides allergens, some people just fear large biotechnology companies such as Monsanto. Some Americans feel that the results of the safety testing are actually unsafe and the large corporations are paid off to say the opposite. Since America has no labeling requirements, there really is no way to tell if what you're eating contains GMOs or not. As time goes by, the amount of land used for agriculture decreases, farmers decrease, and the world’s food supply begin to decrease. Scientists decided to use GMO’s to help stop the decrease in food supply.
