Orthodontist Peruse to Happiness Orthodontics is a branch in relations towards dentistry that specializes in the field of treating patients with improper positioning of teeth when the mouth is closed; they also treat and control facial growth and the shape and development of the jaw. Orthodontics was once called orthodontia, which is originated, from the Greek orthos, meaning “straight, perfect or proper”, and dontos, which mean “teeth”. I want to become an orthodontist because I want to enhance people self-esteem levels by helping them feel better about themselves by improving their teeth the way an orthodontist did for me. To be an applicant to dental school, I must earn a bachelor’s degree from a college or university. Future orthodontists major in biology or chemistry. Toward the end of their junior year, with the intention of applying to dental school one must pass the DAT (Dental Acceptance Test). The DAT scores help determine whether he/she is accepted to dental school or not. Dental school lasts four years, and it is broken into two phases of class work, lab work and supervised clinical practice ("American Association of Orthodontists."). The first two years of dental school include coursework in anatomy, periodontology, radiology and local anesthesia. The final two years, the students practice hands on in clinical settings under supervision of licensed dentists. When graduation is near from dental school, future orthodontists are given the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, or DMD.
