Why I Chose Healthcare

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. With the new presidential administration and different changes in policies, people are putting more focus on hospitals and health insurance companies to make sure they give people the proper care that they need. I want to major in Health Administration because in a world with growing uncertainty and fear of the future, I want to make sure that people aren’t afraid and can afford to get medical care when they are sick or injured. The Bloustein School is the perfect place to help me achieve my goals and start my career in the professional world.

I’ve always known I wanted to help people, but I didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it. My sister has influenced me to pursue a career in the healthcare. At the young age of 20, my sister was told that she was in stage 3 renal failure. At the time I was only 16 years old and still trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, getting news like that was difficult to absorb. The constant doctor visits made me realize a health profession is what I was going to do. The incredible doctors and nurses who have been a part of my family’s journey have left a huge impact on me. I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. I feel it is important to have a goal in life, and it is important to me to show my daughter the value of goals, and achieving them as well. I love meeting new people, and being able to lend a helping hand in any way I possibly can. What better way to help the general population then to have a profession in the health care industry.

While growing up, there are innumerable decisions to be made and paths to take. As I am approaching the ending point of my high school career, I have finally found the correct one for me. I have known from a surprisingly young age that I wish to pursue a job in the medical field, and have taken a number of steps to help achieve this dream. I show tremendous passion for both my educational and career goals, and how to reach them. My future is incredibly important to me because through doing my job, I will also be achieving my biggest goal: saving lives.

As a child, I loved going to work with my mother during my days off from school. She worked at a nursing home, and I was amazed by all of the health care employees I was surrounded by every day. I watched, in admiration, as the nurses gave the elderly their medications, while the nursing assistants made sure they were comfortable and healthy, and while the doctors checked in from time to time to give routine check-ups. As soon as I turned 12 and was old enough to start volunteering at this nursing home, I signed up to do so with excitement pouring out of me. To this very day, I am still active in volunteering at the same nursing home that prompted me to pursue a career in medicine in the first place.

Every year in my elementary school, I was asked what I wanted to become when I “grew up.” Portrayals of doctors were an easy find and I remember telling my parents and teachers that one day, I was going to be a doctor. As I prepare to start my family nurse practitioner school, I am overjoyed to tell my family and friends that I am finally on the road to becoming a primary health care provider. I remember always wanting to be in the health care field but never fully knew what that entailed. I graduated high school with the intention to become a nurse and I was naïve to think that I was prepared for what was in store.

The reason I wanted to be involved in the health field is because I wanted to pursue a career that gives back to other people the blessings that I received when I first entered this world. I was born prematurely and my mother often reminds me that it was the dedicated hard work of the physicians, nurses, and other health-care workers who saved my life when I was born. Throughout my life, this has always been an inspiration and motivation for me to help others. Having a profession in the health field should not be treated as just a career to earn a salary or a paycheck, but as a career where you will be helping to make the world a little healthier and better.

As an adolescent, I envisioned that I would pursue many different careers. I dreamed of becoming a firefighter, a police officer, a marine, and even the future president of our nation. I changed my mind plenty of times on which career path I wanted to pursue. After enrolling in classes that allowed me to realize who I am, I came to the realization of what I am passionate in. The question was posed, “Why Health?”, and my response is based on my intense passion for helping the individuals in my life and more so in my community.

Furthermore, this experience inspired me to enter the healthcare field. I recognized that there were many that shared similar circumstances – possess health issues, and lacked the necessary funds to cover the cost – but were not as fortunate as me. It's really important to be in a health career in today's society, today's society is rough are economy is getting rough also pricing are becoming ridiculous high soon people that are working lower class jobs won't be able to afford to live so i find it important to be in a  health career because you're making a decent amount of money. In today's society people are continuously getting hurt not being careful with out doctors and nurses there would be no one to treat the hurting people.

The goal of the Health Sciences Internship program is to get seniors out into the world of medicine as a taste of what might be in their future. I chose this class for many reasons. One of the reasons is the fact that it will help me in the future to have this practice and have it put on my resume for college and other job opportunities. I also hope to get some excitement from this class by seeing things I am not able to see at this young age and without a degree. The reason I chose this career path option is because my original goal was to be a doctor. Being a nurse practitioner is the next best thing seeing as it has less liability and less schooling. I hope to get experience and insight on what my future could hold.

Thus, I hope in the future I can do more for those living in poverty aside from doing community work. From such experiences, I am assured that I want to be in the health care system to make an effort for others.
