Discuss your reasons for choosing to seek a BSW degree. During my teens as a young Hispanic male, I found myself accepting the negative stereotypes of Hispanics, and began associating with other Hispanic youth who had also accepted the negative stereotypes of Hispanics, and were involved in gangs, drugs, and criminal activity. As time went on several of these individuals including my closest childhood friend had passed away due to gang violence, and many more wound up incarcerated. I too had found myself in a juvenile detention center. In this painful time in my life while sitting in a center block cell with a steel door, I knew that it would later try and help youth to find alternative routes in life. In trying to make sense of these issues, I continued to wonder why nobody had ever attempted to reach out to my friends, or me but felt it was their place to tell us how bad we were. These thought followed me through my teens while living with my father, an immigrant from Honduras, who sold cocaine for a living. As the trials of life continued to play out, not only did I continue to question why nobody ever asked me how I was doing, or attempted to reach out to me, but I was also able to see the affects of drugs first …show more content…
This is where we fall short. There are external factors in our lives that determine our outcomes before we are able to choose. These factors are the context of our personal realities. These realities include: mental health, marginalization, substance use, and abuse. Though I am no one to say the lives of those who have lived these lives or are currently living these lives are any better or worse than mine, I can see that at times it is a painful and difficult reality for them and their loved ones. If we as people were to get what we deserve in life, these realities would exist to extent that they

Choices are like investments, they can be short term or long term, expensive or cheap. However, the consequences are beyond one’s control. In America, we have something many countries don’t have that is a greater freedom to make choices. This freedom is what enables people to reach great heights in success, but that same freedom can also lead people to despair. So while this freedom to make a choice is done ultimately by you, the consequences—whether positive or negative—are something that one must confront and move on.
We live in a world where we are only doing harm to ourselves, until we open up to connections with others. We live in a world where we are quick to judge before even wondering what its like to live in someone else’s shoes. How can we ever make smart decisions when we don’t know all the possibilities there is to know? Truth is we cant. As individuals we all have emotions and feelings and a voice in
Why go against the grain? Why do you need to stand out? Why cant we live in a society where everyone and everything is the same? Which is best for us? Why do we even care? We all have had our share of trying to fit in or be unique. Society does not permit people who are different a easy life. In the odds of society's views, the differences individuality brings help the improvement of society. People bring more value when they are unique then when they try to fit in. They bring more value because if we fit in we become uniform. If we live in a society where everything is the same then we would die.
The struggles of Steve Rogers as a sick, poor, orphaned son of immigrants led to who Captain America became as a hero and the ideals he stands for. “Not anyone could have just become Captain America, it was what was inside of Steve Rogers. The fact that Steve Rogers had this morality, these ethics, this health, this empathy, was something that got enhanced even more so by the formula.” (Jeph Loeb, 75HY). Steve’s father died in WWI when he was young.
With a focus on the University of Pittsburgh’s MSW program, I anticipate a curriculum that will give me tools and unique procedures to analyze and understand clients’ different life situations. This program will provide me with the knowledge to evaluate and apply research methods. I will become more activity oriented to the prevention and alleviation of social problems. Upon completion of master degree, I would have demonstrated empathy along with a genuine desire to improve the quality of the lives of others. The University of Pittsburgh’s MSW program will not only offer a path of
And it is the individual who will choose the best possible outcome of all possible outcomes for her life. For God wills it so.

So, why not build my foundations with a degree in Criminal Justice. With this degree, I have so many options in a field that is precisely there for social dilemmas. Just think, I can go to law school and become a defense lawyer, I can become a Police Officer and then a Detective because I’ll have a four year degree, or I can even go into social work and help the less fortunate. These are only some of the opportunities out of a plethora of jobs that one, with a Criminal Justice degree, can obtain and help
I decided to get this degree not being certain of exactly what I wanted to do, but with the intention of in some way being able to better the lives of children. This degree required many health classes, child and family studies classes, and other classes such as substance abuse and prevention. I think that the knowledge I acquired while earning this degree will help me make good judgment calls as to what is going on in the situation around me, and be able to assess if it is a healthy one or a harmful one. Also, throughout high school and college I worked jobs dealing with the public. I have worked at retail stores as a customer service representative, and as a waitress for many years. These jobs have given me the skills to interact professionally with people, even in situations you may have feelings of anger or frustration. I have also learned through these jobs that I absolutely love working with people, and my ideal job would be one that requires interacting with those in the community around
Choosing to pursue this education to become a Social Service Worker has been a life long passion; living a so called “roller coaster” of a life and being subjected to many things, enjoyable and regretful has helped me in many ways to comprehend what it is to truly have human empathy and compassion for others. A veteran at life in its lowest and highest forms, and feeling completely alone and hopeless at times; being subjected to sexual and physical abuse, seeing what alcohol and drugs do to families, how poverty effects children and loved ones. Fortunately there were a few individuals that reached out, bring me up out of the darkness. This is something that I feel in my heart that needs to be given back, for me to provide someone the empowerment that others have given me, to show that there is hope and give reason to keep going, individuals who feel desperate, help to raise their chances, dreams and the basic needs of life. Having the knowledge of education to give these resources for expert referrals to assist people in desperate times, so they can live the life that is deserving and fulfilling to them, therefore this is my ultimate goal!
Growing up in a low income family and observing the struggles we faced on a daily basis, was one of reason why I attended college. This wasn’t a choice I made out of high school that many teenagers decide. For me, getting a feel for different areas in the human services field was the path I took. It was important for me to explore different options to see what I would want to spend the rest of my life doing. I loved all the different areas in which I explored, but wanted something more.
Also, I have been a volunteer in the community and have worked with people from all walks of life. I am certain this has played a role in my educational path as well as my course of study. I know that my purpose in life is to help others and that purpose has been transferred to my educational route. The graduate degree program will be beneficial to me to fulfill my purpose to change people’s lives. I want to be a positive addition to my future career choice, and with this opportunity to further and better myself I will be able to achieve my
One of the reasons that I run is because it brings physical and emotional benefits to my life. Even though running could be boring, lonely, it could hurt your feet like crazy and above all there are not immediate results for losing weight, I love it. Running makes my life complete, when I don´t run my days are longer and I get tired very fast. My days start very early in the morning when is very dark and I go to the gym to warm up. As the sun comes out, I go to the park where there is a beautiful lake that could go as far as to Kendall Drive from the Tamiami Airport. Sometimes is cold, sometimes is hot depending on the day but when it rains the only place to go is under a bridge which are many. Music is a most for me, especially if is Latin,
