Why Guns Should Be Banned In Schools

Imagine a world where school shootings did not exist. Parents could send their children to school without having to worry about them being shot. In 2013, thirty school shootings took place in the United States. The most devastating school shooting in U.S. history was the Bath School shooting. On May 18, 1927, Andrew Kehoe entered the Bath Elementary School killing thirty-eight people and injuring fifty-eight. Kehoe then returned to his truck, and committed suicide by using explosives. School teachers would have a better chance, in high risk situations if they carried guns.

Guns have been accepted in society for many years now, even before the second amendment provided U.S. citizens the right to bear arms. Conflicts can arise with having the ability to carry around a gun. Guns should not be encouraged tools in a college setting. If students try and bring guns on campus it could cause fatal incidents to happen. If someone has a disagreement they could possibly shoot someone. Educational campuses should be safe and gun free especially when it comes to the youth. Also there is no need to have a gun on hand if there are law enforcements on campus.

There have been many pieces of legislation on the state level and on the congressional level regarding guns on school property. A very polarized piece of legislation was introduced in the Nevada Senate. Nevada Senate Bill 286 was created in response to several violent acts involving school shootings (Taylor, 2008). The bill would have given teachers the right to possess and carry guns on school property regardless if the school is a gun-free zone as long as the teacher possessed proper permits the bill specifically required the teacher to possess a concealed weapon permit along with a proof of completion of a specific firearm training program (“SB286,” n.d.). The bill did not pass in the Nevada Senate, but the bill did help to start the much-needed conversation about the ineffectiveness methods of the prevention of school shootings.

Guns and schools just don’t mix. Of course, this could be arguable from both sides. Only nine out of our fifty states allow guns on campus. Most private universities have the choice to decide if they want to allow concealed weapons on campuses. As for public institutions with the law in its state, they have no choice. Public institutions only have control of what buildings are limited. There are numerous reasons that it could be beneficial, but it can also be a complete catastrophe just waiting to happen. In today’s society, people feel the need to be more protected because of what’s going on in the world. There have been many reported incidents in regards to guns being abused on school grounds. Guns end lives, so it’s imperative that we understand the rules and why they’re so important. In order for people to really understand the pros and cons of having guns on campus, they first must began to understand its safety hazards, retaliation and prevention mechanism.

The difference on perspectives has been a major issue especially after President Obama’s constant effort to pass more gun control laws. In contrast, the presumably and deeply Republican state of Texas, which has very few restrictions on guns, has just passed a law that makes concealed carrying on college campuses legal. Such law has been a controversy and had divided reactions from Texans all around the state. Throughout its history, the United States has had a fascination with guns. Americans have used guns in times of war, for protection, and for hunting. Americans also use guns when they are intent on killing people. When violence happens in school shootings, drive-by shootings, assassination of public officials, or in the workplace and shopping malls, Americans demand something be done. This demand fuels the debate between gun rights and gun control activists. It fuels the debate over the interpretation of the Second Amendment. Allowing teachers to carry guns will allow teachers to prevent school shootings on the grounds of preschool through college campuses. Everyone has their own opinion about teachers being able to carry guns including other teachers, parents, and government officials. Depending on what state the teacher is teaching in determines if they can carry their gun now, if they are in the process of being able to, or if their state is not passing a law to allow them to carry their gun while at school. Teachers would not stand out like police officers or security officers would while in the school which would allow for other teachers and all of the students to have normal days if schools did not have officers before. Research shows that allowing some teachers to carry guns in their school promotes school safety, protects the teachers and students, and promotes gun safety while still teaching their students.

HB 910, better known as the Open-Carry Bill is a bill that was passed on May 29, 2015 and signed into law by Governor Jim Abbott after it cleared both chambers of the Legislature. The Open-Carry Bill allows licensed holders to carry concealed handguns on public college campuses. Abbott claims that the bill will not only strengthen Texans second amendment rights, it will secure them (The Associated Press, 2015). However, the bill has raised questions regarding the safety of students and faculty on college campuses. Texas, along with several other states signed a bill allowing concealed carry of firearms on campus, believing “that mass murderers target gun-free zones, including colleges and universities that ban firearms on campus” (Defilippis & Hughes). Furthermore, it is stated that gun advocates not only believe that firearms could obviate massacres on campus but also prevent sexual assault. Over the past several years the topic of gun control has been very relevant. With the increase in crime and the school shootings, everybody felt the need to have a concealed weapons permit. They wanted to be able to protect themselves and their children. No where is safe in this day in age everybody is fighting and angry. The one place you wouldn't think to worry about, the one place you trust your children to go to being "school" is now a dangerous place. Why would someone want to target a school with innocent children you may ask? Because these people are sick. This reason being why the teachers need to be allowed to have their concealed weapons permits and be able to carry a weapon on school grounds so that they can protect our children

The campus carry bill is a controversial bill that has been passed in many states and in August 2016 it will be enforced in Texas. States like Colorado, Idaho, Kansas and Mississippi have all approved the bill allowing private colleges to follow the law or not, however public colleges are only allowed to choose areas on campus that will be gun-free. The campus carry bill states, individuals 21 years of age, which obtain a handgun license, will be able to carry a gun on campus. The idea of the campus carry bill is to increase the people’s safety and decrease the number of mass shootings and other cases in the United States. There have been many questions brought up by both sides of the issue; there are many pros and cons on the issue that will go into effect with the campus carry bill. Twenty States in the Unites States have prohibited the law for carrying concealed guns on campus, but many others will be passing the bill to give students the right to carry a gun on campus.

The recent state legislation and the rulings in courts, eight states allow students to carry concealed weapons on postsecondary campuses, with Texas being one. The question exists, am I for or against campus carry? Due to the experiences of my previous military career, as a former marine, I understand some may think my views are myopic because of that part of my life. However, I will also focus on past and recent active shooter incidents that initiated the argument on methods for future prevention. In addition to exploring the counter argument against campus carry, I will also present my rebuttal of those arguments. In closing, I will amalgam on how my arguments and actual incidents reflect on my theory on behalf of campus carry.

Although people may say that school administration should be able to carry concealed weapons on school campus for protection of themselves and their students, it is a very bad and dangerous decision. Bringing concealed weapons into schools could cause many tragic things to happen such as a child or teen to possibly pick up the weapon and harm themselves or others, having an unintentional discharge occur in class and it could also cause an increase in violent behavior. So, no administration has no business carrying concealed weapons to school for any reason. It's a bad idea and would just cause heart ache and a lot of unneeded stress.
