Introduction Looking at the nightly news, many would believe violent crimes are at an all-time high. There is no longer just one on one violent crimes or gang violent crimes. There are court shootings, school shootings, church shootings, theater shootings, mall shootings, workplace shootings, and others. Most one on one crime is committed with an illegal gun; whereas most mass shootings are done with handguns that are purchased legally. Although, violent crimes reported on the nightly news is hard to hear or see. It has become very common to encounter this information on a daily basis. According to Lott and Mustard the used data on the character of victims in homicide cases. Mearsuring whether a homicide victim knew the offender and is not a family member. Street and or in home robberies. This information can be obtained via the UCR. Keep in mind the information collected in these reports encompass those who own a gun. But the report does not includes the homeowner who has a gun under the bed or the store owner with the gun under the counter.
Secondary data using existing data, as related to new data that is being gathered or have been recently gathered. Information already exist on the topics that are being studied. In quantitative approaches, it is this knowledge that assists one with finding the hypothesis to be examined in the new research. It opens the door for the researcher to further explore and generate new questions for the study. This also allows the researcher to find gaps in the research process. No more fist fights, sticks and stones or knife fights, the nature of the crime has escalated to gun voilence. Violencne has motived many states to enact conceal to carry laws in an effort to reduce many of the violent crimes we hear and see on the nightly news. Many studies have been done. One done by John R. Lotts Jr. concludes carry handguns is not going to end gun violence. But it does makes them more vulunerable to being attacked. Another study done by Jens Ludwig suggest this does not reduce crime it increasess the adult homicide rates. There seems to be more research that needs to be done on this issue.
