Most people would not complain about athletes making a lot of money. After all, we pay to watch them perform. We root for the ones that play for our teams, and root against the ones that play for the opponents of our favorite teams. The athletes earning the league minimum in a variety of sports are among the top 1% of wage earners in the United States. The problem is, a number of them don't know how to handle money. Among NBA players, 60% file for bankruptcy within five years or less of retiring, according to Wyattresearch.com, and the percentage of former NFL players filing for bankruptcy within the same time frame is even greater--78%. Could part of the reason be their extravagant, some might say dumb, purchases? Following are ten athletes who made some of the dumbest purchases ever. …show more content…
Golden State Guard Jarret Jack may have not made the most expensive purchase of all the athletes on this list, but after all, he spent $375,000 on a shoe collection. Shoes? That's right, he spent almost $400,000 on 1,500 pairs of sneakers. It takes 2,000 cubic feet of space to keep the shoes, and if he wore a different pair every day, it would take him four years before he would wear the same pair twice.
9. Okay, so nobody knows how much Detroit Piston Small Forward Danny Granger has paid for his bat cave. We can't criticize him for spending a lot of money. What possible useful purpose could a subterranean bat cave have in a home in Albuquerque have, however? If he ever wants to sell the house, who would want to buy? On the other hand, if you're a fan of Christian Bale movies, or the old "Batman" television show, maybe it isn't such a bad idea after all.
8. Actually, $500 may seem like a small price for a NFL lineman to pay for something he may have always wanted. On the other hand, why did Darnell Dockett want a pet alligator anyway? Why would anyone want a pet alligator? Dockett admits his pet, "Nino," almost bit his hand
The issue of great sport stars going bankrupt is a very common thing in the present time they are just spending way too much money on things don’t need and not putting any of their money to save as most of them are fresh out of college and some could of come from an extremely poor background and for the first time being able to spend money on what they want it never goes well.
There are a lot of athletes that have this problem. Unfortunately there are athletes that have this problems that fall deeper than others. Like NBA all-star legend Allen Iverson his salary was right under 21 million .But overtime he developed spending habit purchasing .Purchasing jewelry, clothes , and also use different luggage carriers to avoid carrying bags. This partially was the cause of him picking up debts and financial issues. He not the only one though. One of the most pound for pound boxers Michael Tyson .He is known for buying the most. After the upcoming years he finally declared bankruptcy, most athletes have spending habits, purchasing unnecessary expensive
College is the most elite of all education, bringing together the most intelligent people to become the next generation of citizens. Out of all the people who go to College; athletes have worked the most to get there, countless vigorating hours of practice and dedication to a sport. Along with getting a scholarship to go to college, they should receive a check for playing for the college of choice. Though you may say that they get money in the scholarship what other money do they get to rent or buy other essentials.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and major division one programs are reeling in millions of dollars from the performance of students at their respective institutions. The athletes are compensated with scholarships in tuition, books, housing, and meals. Even though the athletes are receiving compensation from their universities, student athletes deserve to be paid because of the time devoted to being an athlete, the business behind the NCAA, and the profitability of the athlete’s own image.
Sports happen to be tremendously popular in college, especially the sports of football and basketball. For college students, athletic events are temporary domes that thrive from exuberance and livelihood that was once suppressed by the monotonous nature of “The School” and “The School’s Work”. Students are finally free and unfettered by the dominating homework chains. They lose control at these events. Pretty much, most of these students will return broke, empty handed, with no traces of money whatsoever.
Jimmy Garoppolo will make 42.6 Million dollars more than Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield was voted the best player in NCAA football and Jimmy Garoppolo was a 2nd string QB at the beginning of the year. Jimmy Garoppolo make 469 times the average american male’s salary. Baker Mayfield is going to college for free but he still deserves a portion of the money that the college makes. Colleges can make a upward of $100 MIllion from 1 sport and what do they do with all that money? Yes they may have expenses but they still have money left over. NCAA athletes deserve to get paid because for the most part their statistics are better, they make money for the college, and they are the future.
The NCAA is an organization, founded by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, led by a group of board members who’s goal is to have college players succeed both athletically and scholarly; coined the term ‘student athlete.’ The sport of football was having many problems in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s and President Roosevelt said, “reform the game or it will be abolished.” Thus, the birth of the NCAA was formed and rules were set to make the game safer to the athletes. The NCAA currently has three different divisions: Division I, Division II, and Division III. Each division has its own set of rules on what restrictions are placed. Division I is said to be the most competitive division where the top talent goes and where a lot of professional teams pull from. The NCAA is the main headline for all college sporting events and “runs the show” telling what people can, and cannot, do. The
Jake martin was a student athlete in college. He are ready pay thousands of big bucks to get to college and his barely getting by.Jake play football and was getting a lot of hype!He needed money. He´s in magazines, jersey sales, commercials and etc and not getting an penny! Many athletes like Jake should get pay in college in these reasons. They should be paid to take care of expenses, because they worked hard on the court to earn the money and because the colleges are making a lot of money off of them.
Lamar Jackson, John Elway, Julius Peppers, Tim Tebow, Herschel Walker, and Bo Jackson. What do all these guys have in common besides the fact that they were college football players? It’s simple, they never got paid. They’d go out and play football on Saturday for all of us to watch on ESPN, but they never got one dime from the television company or their colleges. All they received was a scholarship, but is the scholarship really worth enough anymore. This has split college athletes and colleges forever due to the impact of the value scholarships, the effect on little schools and the potential ways pay the athletes.
Around eight million high school students participate in athletics within the United States, and more than 480,000 will progress to compete as NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) athletes during college. However, a study from ESPN found that male basketball and football players at a major university who were deemed criminal suspects were either not prosecuted, had charges dropped, or never faced charges at all– 56 percent of the time. These players were treated better than others and therefore have an advantage over them, thus is preferential treatment. Many coaches and athletic administrators believe that athletes are treated equally compared to their peers, but that is not true. Athletes receive preferential treatment by receiving higher grades in school along with
other millions of athletes that go on to have to pursue other careers. To be in debt with
Student athletes have been disrespected their whole career, even though College athletic is considered a money maker of a business, the athletes don’t even get paid, some say it is because paying them will reduce the amount of competitiveness, some say they aren’t employees so they shouldn’t get paid. Even the full scholarships they are getting has flaws. Overall the colleges are just too greedy.
How would you know what you are really good at if you don’t try everything? You would never know what you are really good at until you have tried everything. Although some people believe that limiting extracurricular activities will help you to stay on track, I think it is better if I decide how I want to spend my time because no one knows what I am really capable of better than myself and because some people are looking forward to getting athletic scholarships for college.
Imagine a workers boss getting paid from his or her success while the worker gets nothing in return. If you have not realized already that is a pretty basic definition of a pimp and that is exactly what the NCAA does to their athletes (Latham). The NCAA should pay their college athletes for their hard work.
College athletics is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States. Games are often broadcasted on prime time television, and the athletes are not paid a cent. So how is that? Recruitment is the answer. The student athletes are promised an education and facilities in return for the athletic ability on the field or court. And the same goes for any business, except money is the exchange.
