Most people would not complain about athletes making a lot of money. After all, we pay to watch them perform. We root for the ones that play for our teams, and root against the ones that play for the opponents of our favorite teams. The athletes earning the league minimum in a variety of sports are among the top 1% of wage earners in the United States. The problem is, a number of them don't know how to handle money. Among NBA players, 60% file for bankruptcy within five years or less of retiring, according to Wyattresearch.com, and the percentage of former NFL players filing for bankruptcy within the same time frame is even greater--78%. Golden State Guard Jarret Jack may have not made the most expensive purchase of all the athletes on this list, but after all, he spent $375,000 on a shoe collection. Shoes? That's right, he spent almost $400,000 on 1,500 pairs of sneakers. It takes 2,000 cubic feet of space to keep the shoes, and if he wore a different pair every day, it would take him four years before he would wear the same pair twice.

9. Okay, so nobody knows how much Detroit Piston Small Forward Danny Granger has paid for his bat cave. We can't criticize him for spending a lot of money. What possible useful purpose could a subterranean bat cave have in a home in Albuquerque have, however? If he ever wants to sell the house, who would want to buy?
