Although the one possible way of addressing world hunger is the genetic modification of crops, there are other methods and negative side effects such as the increase in allergies and the negative impacts on the environment. While the solution of world hunger that could possibly come from GMOs could change the world forever, the effects on the environment and the health of the human race could negatively affect the world, outweighing the solution to world hunger.

Every day, between 21,000 to 24,000 people die because of hunger or diseases associated with hunger. In 2010, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that 239 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were hungry/undernourished. However, there are many reasons why these numbers are so high, such as poverty, harmful economic systems, conflict, environmental factors, etc. While people in Africa are starving, other countries have too much food. This is a major problem and I believe that everything possible should be done to end starvation not only in Africa, but all over the world.

In the article, “Can genetically modified organisms feed the world?” by Philippe Demenet it states how genetically modified foods can help people with malnutrition by stating organizations that help people that are suffering from malnutrition and or starvation. Unfortunately, not all people have access to resources especially food. Malnutrition is the lack of having vital nutrients the body needs to survive. Because of the lack of nutrients, people who suffer from malnutrition look very angular and victims are in danger of death. However, when they do have access to food, the lack of vital foods leads to malnutrition. Therefore, there is always an advertisement on television asking for money to help children in Africa for education, water, and especially food. However, with the help of genetically modified foods, children no longer have to worry about food because crops can be modified to resist the environment around them in order to grow until its ready to be eaten. World Hunger is an issue all around the world, where many people are starving due to the lack of access to food. This can lead to diseases, and even death. In fact, 1 child dies every 10 seconds due to hunger (Know Your World). I have chosen to address this issue, as I come from India, a country that suffers from hunger problems. I also chose to address this issue, as I want everyone to have the human rights they deserve. The change I would like to see in this issue is food for everyone, and no child, adult, or senior having to skip a meal, or go to bed on an empty stomach. I know that there are other points of view on this issue, such as worrying about keeping our own population healthy before worrying about other countries. However, all humans are a family, and an effect on one affects all others.

Today, almost one person of every seven does not get the nutritious food they need in order to be healthy and obtain the energy they need throughout each day. 70% of the starving population are women and children. Hunger can be just as bad as AIDS or malaria but yet is solvable. It is possible to feed every person in the world and no scientific breakthroughs needed. We can solve the problem with today’s knowledge, tools and policies.

Millions of people in the world went to bed hungry last night. The amount of food in the world is unevenly distributed and adequately produced to satisfy the needs of humanities growing population. The hunger issue the planet is faced with can be resolved with the conservation of excess food, the increased use of Genetically Modified Foods (GMFs) and the greater funding of global relief efforts.

Every year, millions of people die all over the world due to disease, war, and old age, but hunger is commonly overlooked. Diseases like cancer are constantly being studied in order to find a cure, but for hunger, there is one cure: food. While charity is essential to fighting hunger in Africa, it only meets short-term needs. It feeds people, clothes them, and gives them shelter, but it does not solve the issue of hunger and the reasons hunger exists. Justice enables social change, strikes the core of the problem, resulting in long-lasting changes, and embraces fundamental human rights. Everyone should have the right to food, the right to not be plagued by the perpetual pursuit of filling that void in their life, the right to be free from longing, and the right to life. Although hunger in Africa continues to persist, there are three viable solutions that would help fight it, allowing hunger to be conquered.
