Not all animals migrate during the winter; such as: birds, fish, whales and sea turtles. On the other hand, most mammals, and some reptiles like the tortoise prefer to sleep during the whole winter, which will usually last up to five to seven months. These months vary from animal to animal; this is called hibernation. Ubeda claims in his article that, hibernation is a deep sleep in which an animal's body temperature drops to just above the temperature of the outside world to conserve as much energy as possible (Ubeda). Hibernation by larger animals, such as, the bear or mountain lion usually occurs during the winter in large dens. On the other hand, if the animal is smaller like a squirrel or a rabbit, hibernation will take place in a small hole or a tree. One reason why hibernation occurs is because food is scarce and harder to achieve, so animals need to conserve all their energy. In Grabianowski’s article, he claims that an animal starts hibernation by slowing their heart rate down (which allows their body temperature to drop) (Grabianowski). Animals need to hibernate to save as much energy as possible for the …show more content…
They do not need to get up for food, but maybe for water (which is very scarce because it’s mostly frozen during the winter time any way) and to rid themselves of any waste they may need to get rid of.Toothman states in her article that if they really needed to wake up during hibernation it would only need to be about once every two or three weeks for a short period of time (Toothman). It may not be safe how ever for an animal to wake from hibernation and move around too much because they could lose a lot of useful energy that could keep them alive during the long harsh winter. Most animals on the other hand, to avoid losing any valuable energy, stay asleep during the whole hibernation process and take care of all they need to take care of after they wake up from there deep
The Fat-tailed Dunnart is a nocturnal animal which means it sleeps during the day and it’s awake at night. The Fat-tailed dunnart is an exothermic animal because it is a mammal and a marsupial. While awake, it spends the majority of its time feeding.( Every night The Fat-tailed Dunnart approximately equals its own body weight of food.) Usually in the cooler months, Dunnarts may enter a deep temporary sleep known as
A lemming is and small rodent animal that lives in the arctic. And the biome called the tundra that is usually up north. The tundra is biome when it is cold, snowy, and dry. Plant life in the tundra is cold. They have a variety of plants there, they have bearberry, Caribou moss, Diamond leaf willow, Labrador Tea, Pasque Flower. Most animals that live in the tundra eats these plants to gain and use energy and season to stay warm. The tundra is a very cold place to be the temperatures start from 20 to 10 Fahrenheit so in Celsius that would be -6 to -12. And also during the summer time the have 50 to 60 of summer growing when the sun shines everyday 24 hours a day. Lemmings do not hibernate through the winter time. They keep on find food so they
One animal that prepares for the arrival of winter is the Rana Sylvatica, it is a species of wood frog’s that freezes it self through winter and then comes back to life. The tiny amphibians can survive for weeks with an incredible two-thirds of their body water completely frozen to the point where they are essentially solid frog sicles . Even more incredible is the fact that the wood frogs stop breathing and their hearts stop beating entirely for days to weeks at a time. In fact, during its period of frozen winter hibernation, the frogs physical processes from metabolic activity to waste production grind to a near halt. What’s more the frogs are likely to endure multiple freeze or thaw episodes over the course of a winter. The frogs have
Rattlesnakes are even known to move around during extended warm periods during winter months, especially if they hole up in a stump or other location that can be warmed easily by sunshine. Snakes do not actually hibernate, rather they become less active during cold weather. It is called
“Black bears are not true hibernators” according to Nation Geographic. Black bears have several reasons they may leave their den during the winter months, mainly if they do not have enough food to last the winter, they will leave and search for more. If the weather is warmer like down in Florida and Louisiana, they don’t necessarily have a winter. They will remain in their dens if they give birth, presumably for the safety of the cubs.
Chipmunks do not enter winter with a thick layer of body fat as do other hibernating animals. Instead they begin gathering and storing food in autumn and live off of that until late October or early November. Length of wintering behavior varies.
Kirk Bloodsworth was 22 when he spent eight years in prison, two of those on death row. He was wrongfully convicted. A 9-year old girl was raped and killed on July 25, 1984. Two boys had seen her walking with a man before she suddenly disappeared. The boys described the man to the police and the police came to the conclusion that the murderer was Bloodsworth. He repeatedly claimed he was innocent but he was found guilty and sentenced to death on March, 1985. After 8 years he finally proved he was innocent through DNA testing. He was released from prison on June 1993. He was paid 300,000 dollars (“Correcting”). The US should not institute the death penalty everywhere in the country because it would put us at risk of executing innocent people, costs us millions of dollars in administering the penalty and there is a better way to help the families of murder victims.
Black Bears are not hibernators, but they do become a lot less active and go into a dormant state during the winter months. This is referred to Seasonal Lethargy. Black bears enter their dens in October and November. Before to that time, they can put on up to 30 pounds of body fat to get them through the seven months during which they fast. Winter dormancy in Black Bears typically lasts 3–5 months. They spend their time
Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia that means treeless plain. It is located in the northern hemisphere, encircling the North Pole and extending south to the coniferous forest of taiga .It has been called "the land of the midnight sun". The sun can't warm the tundra up much. The Tundra Biome has short seasons of growth and reproduction. Their seasons last 50 to 60 days. Some animals that live in this biome are voles’s, caribou, arctic hares, and squirrel, these animals are all herbivorous. The carnivorous that live here are arctic foxes, wolves, and polar bears. Ravens, snow, buntings, falcons, loons, sand nippers, terns, snow birds, and gulls are all migratory birds. The fish in this biome are cod, flatfish, and trout. The plants
Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King are famous for their works in horror. Who are these authors and why do they write these horrifying tales? Edgar Allan Poe’s life and literary works are more ominous than Stephen King’s life and literary work.
This is accomplished through increased feeding and metabolic rates, the specific dynamic action, and its thick dense fur which traps a layer of air to mitigate heat loss. Its behavior is also almost totally based on keeping the needs of its metabolism going. We see this in the large amount of their time they spend foraging, and with how much time they spend grooming which is key to keeping that crucial layer of air beneath their fur. The total metabolic output that this animal maintains day to day is astounding to me, and is unmatched by other marine mammals who don’t have the small body that the otter has. Which results in a high surface area to volume ratio. This means that otters have to potential to lose heat quickly when their fur is compromised. But even then the sea otter has its amazing 16 MJ metabolism to save it and when it comes down to it, that is what allows this crafty and beautiful animal to persist in the harsh elements of the cold Pacific.
Since there are many arctic organisms that are bigger than them, Snowbun are able to swim and hold their breath for
Asiatic black bears are primarily nocturnal feeders and sleep in a tree hole or in a cave during the daytime, but they do sometimes forage diurnally. During the autumn, their nocturnal activity increases("Asiatic Black Bears", 2004). They shift their ranges in early autumn in order to obtain native broadleaved
Nocturnal animals are more active at night than daytime. These animals sleep during daytime and hunt their food at night. They have special adaptation that helps them to survive at night. They prefer to come out at night to escape the daytime heat though some nocturnal animals can be seen during the day and others spend the whole day resting or sleeping.
Many scholars agree that business interest groups are powerful political actors and influence the political process. Business interest groups often pay money to political campaigns in order to influence politicians into supporting the business interests of that company and not the interests of the regular citizens who are voting (Acherman,1975). The focus of this Literature Review is to discuss the research on the topic of voter efficacy and the corporate influence in politics.
