Why did you choose health care management as your career?
Twenty-four years ago, my dad boarded a one-way flight to the U.S. He was coming to a new country filled with vocational opportunities his homeland could not provide. He was not limited by his place of birth or the reality that no one else in his family had ever left their village. He trusted his gut and took a leap of faith. A year later he called for my mother and I to join him in the U.S. and we left our life in Kenya and my future was ultimately changed. Throughout my life, I have been keenly aware that had my father limited himself to only opportunities that he could see, I would have never even been able to consider opportunities such as the UNC Medical Center Administrative Fellowship.
I chose a career in healthcare management because it provides me with an opportunity to align my personality with my purpose. One of my gifts that I have to offer is that I

I am interested in pursuing an administrative career within a major health system. The UNC Fellowship Program will provide opportunities for me to : (1) gain operational and financial exposure to health care delivery within a nationally competitive health system; (2) acquire a diverse leadership perspective through shadowing and mentorship with Senior Leaders; (3) support UNC operational initiatives by leading at least one significant project that improves patient quality of care within a service line(s). In addition, I hope to learn more about how research interacts with clinical care and gain further insight and to see how the overarching strategy of UNC Health Care interacts with the School of Medicine and medical staff organization. My goal at the end of the Fellowship is to smoothly make the transition to a young leader in health care administration armed with the knowledge and foundation in health care management that I have acquired during the
I found the program to be well rounded in the health care field and I am happy that I chose to continue with this program as an entry into the health administration field. This program has given me more opportunity to prepare an entrance into a professional environment of being of service in various health facilities and agencies, clinics and hospitals. The responsibility of the health administrator will encompass a wide variety of duties including but not limited to administrative, medical, legal and ethical requirements and brilliantly combines the overall knowledge of the business administration and the health care system.
CHHMP is one of Columbia’s student run free-clinics and is my second clerkship. Because there are only 10 students per class that are a part of CHHMP, students must take turns being “clinic managers”. I asked a couple of second year students about their experiences managing versus being a part of a clinical team, and drew upon my recent experience being a clinic manager for this assignment.
“He who has health has hope. And he who has hope, has everything.”- Benjamin Franklin. The decision to pursue a lifetime of service within the Healthcare industry was quite easy for me. After witnessing the importance of having exceptional health care first hand, I want to do everything I can to assist others by ensuring that healthcare policies and procedures are followed properly. Without proper health care, a person can feel lost and hopeless. I believe that an Administrative Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital will enable me with the necessary tools to plan, direct, communicate, and govern effectively in a health care facility.
My career commitment as a nurse has grown tremendously over the past three years; through my daily experiences as a Medical Assistant. I have devoted my time as a full time student and employee of the health care profession. Both of these occupations have helped shape me into the person I want to be for as long as time allows. Daily I witness these community role models that posses abilities such as problem solving skills, promotion and protection of an individual’s advocacy all tied in with compassion to meet the health care needs of an individual.
Since the inauguration of my health care career at Keck Medicine of USC, I knew there would be no other academic institution that could better prepare me to excel at becoming a leader amongst the health care community. I have inquired with multiple USC hospital employees about the EMHA program, and all have spoken with high regards that USC offers an excellent healthcare administration master’s degree. I hope to be challenged intellectually while developing leadership skills necessary to mature into a successful leader. My work experience has prepared me to undertake the challenges that would be associated with remaining a full time employee at USC while pursuing an Executive Master of Health Administration.
Medical office management jobs are one of the fastest growing professions in the health industry in 2012 predicted to grow as much as 22% in the next 8 years. What is a medical office manager? How much can they earn? What type of person would be a good candidate for a medical office manager position? What would be their responsibilities? How can a person become a medical office manager, and what are some the current issues affecting medical office managers
I’ve worked for DaVita dialysis for two years; before changing careers I worked in early childhood education for 8 years. I decided to make a career change because I didn’t feel in my heart that I was being challenging myself enough to my full potential. I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to help others. My mother has been an LPN for over 36 years, so I spent countless hours at her job at a hospital when I was growing up. I would spend time in the office of the her director of nurse and I would ask questions for days. I’ve always had a passion for healthcare, but, I was afraid of blood so decided that nursing was out the question for me. So I chose the business side of healthcare to focus on. I want to advance my career in healthcare.
Healthcare and healthcare planning are vital in today’s ever-changing world, without education and experience one cannot help patients or make policy changes that benefit all stakeholders. In addition, many people do not understand the ever-changing medical policies and treatment options that are available. Therefore, I am compelled to use my knowledge and education to coordinate healthcare needs of the people in my community. Whether this is managing outpatient care, inpatient care needs or healthcare resources. Therefore, the Marylhurst Healthcare MBA program and all three concentrations will enable me to obtain the skills I need to succeed.
Above the requirement of my master’s degree program to complete an administrative residency for a period of 9 to 12 months, my decision to pursue a fellowship at a hospital was based on the educational and professional opportunities the program provides. The practical experience and exposure across the organization will truly lay the groundwork for a successful career and bridge the gap between academic theory and technology and practical application. Leadership is an applied skill, but too often, it is left to chance as something to be picked up on the job. Progressing as a successfully leader requires more. The fellowship will provide opportunities to develop and strengthen my leadership skills, which will maximize my level of contribution in a permanent entry-level position and increase my marketability significantly.
I have seen the benefits of the physician fellowship model in my current practice, having watched as they grow into confident clinical leaders. I hope to emulate their growth as a learner, teacher, and leader in nursing through my own fellowship experience. Just as I have done as a student and nurse, I hope to participate and lead initiatives such as ground rounds, journal club, quality improvement projects, and evidence-based practice change.
I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. I feel it is important to have a goal in life, and it is important to me to show my daughter the value of goals, and achieving them as well. I love meeting new people, and being able to lend a helping hand in any way I possibly can. What better way to help the general population then to have a profession in the health care industry.
Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. With the new presidential administration and different changes in policies, people are putting more focus on hospitals and health insurance companies to make sure they give people the proper care that they need. I want to major in Health Administration because in a world with growing uncertainty and fear of the future, I want to make sure that people aren’t afraid and can afford to get medical care when they are sick or injured. The Bloustein School is the perfect place to help me achieve my goals and start my career in the professional world.
My goal is to have a career in health care management. While researching careers, I discovered health care management. I choose health care management as my career option for two reasons. I’m looking for a career where I can do what I passionate about and impact lives. These are important factor in my career choice. Health care management met my two requirements and at that point I knew this was the career for me. I firmly believe that any career I pursue should be one that I’m passionate about. One of my passions is helping others. Health care managers help patients just as much as doctors, nurses and other clinical professionals. For me it’s very imperative that I find a career were I would have impact the lives of others. This would ensure that I’m fulfilling one of my purposes in life. I 'm ready to experience the emotional and intellectual rewards my MBA will
My mission is to become a professional who would manage, lead, and improve a dynamic healthcare system. Understandably, marketing and public relations in healthcare require financing and regulations to make positive impacts in the lives of clients and co-workers. My interest in taking a healthcare career was founded on three factors: leadership, quality improvement, and healthy aging. My career mission is founded on emerging as a skilled servant leader by not doing the job for myself, but to fulfill the organization’s mission. I would prefer serving my clients without an ego and I will include both paperwork helping patients, staff members and official meetings. Overall, I am passionate about a client-directed philosophy that puts the health needs of patients above the convenience of my organization. The current situation demands that healthcare practitioners build healthcare models in the needs of clients served rather than the customs of staff.
My clinical experience for this semester was an opportunity to follow the house supervisor at Trios Healthcare in Kennewick, WA. The courses at Washington State University (WSU) consisting of leadership and management have taught me the value of collaboration as well as communication. With the opportunity to follow the house supervisor I was able to apply this knowledge to my clinical experience. This was especially good because one of my learning objectives was to participate in the management of admissions and transferring patients in the
