The holocaust was a very sad point in all of history. And one of the best things to ever happen to germany. Trude Silman was one of the “lucky” people to survive the holocaust. Very few people survived the holocaust. The holocaust started off when Adolf Hitler was put into the office for germany. He started off slow by making the jews wear yellow stars and took away some of their privileges. Then he started to destroy all of their shops and homes, that night was called “The night of broken glass.”(Rice 42) Then Adolf Hitler forced 17,000-18,000 polish jews out of Poland and dumped them at the border, they were sent in railway cars and were not treated very nicely. Trude Silman was a little girl when all of this started to happen. She has a lot of videos and documentaries of her life and what had happened to her and how she survived. I am going to sum up all of the documentaries and videos for you in this “essay.” Trude Silman grew up in Bratislava and lived in a happy middle class family and had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Her sisters sadly died and so did her two brothers. Her parents died on the train to the concentration camp, and saved Trudes life, by taking bullets for her and her siblings. She didn’t say much about her holocaust experience but what she did say was absolutely outstanding. She has killed one of the nazi guards there at the concentration camp. She killed him by taking him by surprise and snapping his neck and no one saw her do this. She said that “she regrets her decision and wishes that she didn’t do anything to harm him but she saw an opportunity and took it. Now after the holocaust she is living in the UK with her 9 cats and 3 dogs. Her husband died of a heart attack while he was sitting in his chair at her house. She says that many ask why didn’t you fight back, or why did you go like sheep to be slaughtered without any resistance? The questions made her rethink her experience. In her 70’s she began to write about her imprisonment, and after the times of 9/11 it is crucial that she felt she told her story. If she shared her experiences, this will be one more convincing piece of evidence against the possibility of interment camps in the United States every happening again.
First, we start off with the main character named Sophia, she is in love with a man who not only beats her, but abuses drugs a lot. This man’s name is Nathan and is a bad influence in Sophie’s life. Later, we discover that Nathan is no longer abusive to Sophie, because he kills himself with Cyanide, the same drug used in the Gas chambers at death camps. At first, we see Sophie’s character as just a regular person that has bad taste in men. But, we realize later in the story that she has been hiding her secrets of her past from her friends all this time, which is hinted at, when we discover a blue number tattooed on her arm. We now know she is a concentration camp survivor that not only was abused sexually by Nazi’s, but is not even Jewish at all. She is actually Polish, and was not a labor worker at the camp digging and doing various physical demanding tasks. Sophie’s job at the camps was to translate things for the Nazi’s, which resulted in helping her not die from weather or weakness, like many victims went through. Although she is not involved with the killing of people, she does however still feel guilty because she helped her racist father make Pamphlets for how the Jews were pollutants. She also underwent the tragic event of being separated from her son after being admitted into the camp. Lastly, we see another major character named Stingo, he ends up being Sophie’s
After her husband Rudolf got killed, she lost her job because of the communist party. As long as the communist was running things she was not allowed to have a job. Thrown out of every house she moved to because the party controlled that as well, this goes to show that they truly had control over everything. She studied how the people act under a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state. “Loss of Father , loss of Husband , loss of honor , loss of Health , Loss of Employment and opportunity to complete education “ (Kovaly pg.174) all under a party that her and her husband joined, the had to let it be known that the party wasn’t going to do anything that they
21 years ago, she began devoting her time speaking to the public about her experiences. She has talked all over the world, allowing everyone to hear her story. Along with traveling all over the world to tell her story, she has her own film “My name is Noemi” and her own book “Sharing is Healing: A Holocaust Survivor’s Story.” The film and the book both provide insight into a different perspective of her story. They both add to her credibility, and allow a more in depth look of what it was like. For someone who has been through such a difficult task to talk about, her overall presentation was outstanding. She was even able to add some humor to such a dark topic, which helped alleviate the saddening
