British Empire
Throughout the British Rule the government had the desire to expand and lusted to gain as many resources as they could. In the beginning of the Industrial Revolution the economy was booming and the stocks were thriving. The reasons that caused the British to go for a search of new colonies were that the British population was growing fast and they needed land to export their population and they also needed new markets to sell their excess of product and get raw materials. Though the British Empire had the intentions of creating a better way of life for foreign lands as well as themselves, they had also created a corrupt society for once peaceful countries.
The British empire had the intentions of creating
Since the beginning of time various groups across the globe have fought for their freedom, and territory. Some groups failed and found little fortune while others prospered giving way to powerful nations capable of seizing land from the less fortunate for their own benefit. This is what modern day historians refer to as imperialism. Throughout history these powerful nations have used imperialism to their advantage. In simple terms imperialism is a powerful tool used by powerful nations in order to spread their influence into other smaller less powerful nations, whether it be through religion, pop-culture, technology, or military force. Which eventually results in total domination over the area in which the powerful nation has spread its
The motivation behind conquering colonies in Africa starts with the opportunity to thrive economically. In document 9 from the Resolution of the German Social Democratic Party Congress 1900, it states that acquiring new lands, “…corresponds…to the greedy desire of the bourgeoisie for new opportunities to invest… [in] new markets. This shows one of the motivations for colonization; to invest and open new markets in the new lands in hope to make a profit. The desire for new markets in Europe was getting bigger and bigger now that the population was rising and jobs were becoming scarce. Colonizing new areas in Africa would lead to more imports and exports leading to more jobs which seemed appealing to most people. Supporting the idea of creating a better economy is document 4, which is a speech in 1888 by Joseph Chamberlain. In his speech he says, “We have suffered much in this country from depression of trade. We know how many of our fellow-subjects are at this moment unemployed.” This quote shows that Britain’s trade is declining with other nations and many of the people are unemployed. This is motivation for the British to colonize in Africa because with new colonies in Africa, trade would
Like in document 3 Raymond Aron says "One of the colonial undertakings was motivated by the quest for capitalist profits", which explains another cause for imperialism. Also in document 4 Cecil Rhodes says "..the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race", he's explaining the idea of spreading power. This idea is still applied to
The Taiping Rebellion and Indian Mutiny were both revolts caused by Britain's actions, motivated by their wish to control international trade in stride towards their Imperialistic goals of globalizing their trade network to maximize profit and control. As information was gathered on Southeast Asia, Britain became increasingly interested by the potential value of native goods. With the additional help of developing technology at the time, Britain was able to gain control via despotism. The imperialistic rule was successful as encountered regions in Southeast Asia had always easily controlled by global powers, until indigenous voices in India and China were finally heard in their fight to push back against Britain's greedy actions. Britain had found it necessary to expand their reach in India and China for various reasons, some of which being to spread Christianity, creating more ports for sailors, and benefitting trade networks. However India and China found fewer benefits in Britain's motives and their message was eventually heard as the indigenous fought Britain's globalization tactics that were not mutually beneficial but could be found on the agenda of British Imperialism.
Industrialization added to Britain’s desire for raw materials and new markets and the British were motivated by this desire and looked for colonies to obtain. Adopting the policy of imperialism was economically beneficial for Britain, since it helped supply Britain with raw materials for industrial development, along with cheap food for Britain’s developing population. Britain chose to become imperialistic, because it would bring them prudent and economic benefits.
The British colonies in America began not by the government but as profit seeking corporations. King James chartered a joint-stock enterprise as a religious mission to convert the Indians to Christianity but a lot of their intentions were motivated by the lure of profit. They were looking for a source of gold and other minerals, products like wine, citrus fruits and olive oil, and forest products.
British Colonization of China. Britain was power hungry and craved more money, they saw the opportunity in China (Green). The problem with that was China was not so willing to let them take over. The British went about their plan to colonize China, by slowly gaining control of the trade (Bentley, Ziegler, and Streets-salter). However, China was not so eager to hand over trade.
The country had suffered a period of political instability followed by a strong government, which, most importantly, was not very involved in British industrialization. At the time, there was also demand for goods from within the country as well as a demand for trade with other nations. (Zanden)
Britain's need for expansion due to the industrial revolution lead to the colonisation
The empire has many good things but it also has bad things to it. On the positive side, it created better means of transportation. It also transported goods to other countries including cotton which was in high demand. On the negative side, the rich would profit off the poor. The british empire is a good thing because it helped increase transportation and increased trade.
The most important reason Britain was the first country to industrialize was Government Policies. The government had a really big impact on Britain it changed the ways people lived, how the economy worked and peoples rights and freedom. The government helped people stabilize and have their property fairly. They encouraged people to follow laws and be civilized because without someone setting standards people don’t know what they are doing. The Government also has control so they get to choose how they want to run society. Without government policies people would be lost and and would be getting into trouble all the time because there is no limit nor is there rules for them to follow. The government created patent laws that allowed inventors
Britain established a series of acts to control the colonies and this became the main cause of the revolution. These acts enabled
As R.P Buddicom once said, “The sun never sets on the British Empire.” Due to the Industrial Revolution, the production rates of products significantly increased, leading to low profits from house markets. For this reason, the British Empire felt the need to develop connections with foreign regions in order to acquire raw materials, markets, and other pathways of investment. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the British empire developed a thirst for power, leading to the colonization of India, the Congo, and China. However, the treatment of the Chinese during colonization was far different from the treatment of India and the Congo due to the involvement of trade, rebellions, weakening dynasty. In contrast to India and the Congo, the
So one of the reasons why the Europeans wanted to sail the oceans was to find new trade routes to Asia, and as well as India. The British succeeded in controlling the Indian Territory, but also colonizing various aspects of the Indian society like religion, economy, politics and education. Because of this Britain had two goals and those goals were to make a profit and spread civilization among Indians.
The UK led this renewal in a variety of different ways, including their natural resources, agricultural abundance, and imperial power. Before the industrial revolution, they had a great abundance of wood and coal, which allowed them to power factories and easily transport these resources due to their geographic advantage. In the 18th century, a larger percentage of land was used for production that fueled a growing population. The result of people moving to urbanize contributed the need for labor. Industrialization also prospered because of the country’s large colonial empire. By the early 19th century, the UK dominated oceanic trade, advantaging the factory owners since their exports could be transported abroad. British dominance of world trade meant that it efficiently controlled the economies of regions that the UK had formally exerted control over.
