Since the beginning of time people have always had to deal with bullies. Just like anything else, however, things tend to evolve with technology. With the evolution of social media and technology some adolescents and even adults are simply unable to escape harassment from their peers in school and in the workplace. This social phenomenon is what has come to be known as cyberbullying.

Cyber bullying is a terrible thing our world is dealing with one reason it is horrific is because it can be anonymous, someone can be saying nasty hurtful things that can't be controlled. Another reason is a person who is being bullied online can't really stick up for themselves. Bottom line cyber bullying is wrong and needs to be put to a stop.

Bullying is described as the ongoing physical or emotional victimization of a person by another person or group of people. Cyber-bullying is an emerging problem in which people use social media and texting, to harass and cause emotional harm to their victims.

Because of the circumstance in which this form of bullying can happen anytime or anywhere, it can cause a lot more grief for the victims. About 97% of today’s youth are connected to the internet in some way, and about 20-40% have experienced some form of cyberbullying at least once.1 This means that about 200-400 million people between the age of 15 and 24 have been cyberbullied. Cyberbullying has been an issue since the internet was first introduced for public use, and it is still a rising issue today. That is why it is our job to fix it.

There are many damaging types of cyberbullying. One of the most popular forms of cyberbullying is harassment. Harassment is sending offensive and malicious messages to someone repeatedly. Cyberstalking, another form of harassment, is constant criticism or threats of physical harm. Flaming refers to an online fight through emails, instant messaging, or chat rooms. It is very similar to harassment and involves large audiences. Masquerading includes a bully making an unknown or fake identity to harass someone anonymously, as Megan Meier’s bully did. There has been multitude of cases in cyberbullying. There is one case that has stood out. In a radio interview, Eden Foster talked about a girl named Megan Meier she got into a conflict with cyberbullies and she ended up getting mentally hurt by all of the terrible comments online and the conflict went to court. An act was made for Megan called the Megan Meier Prevention Act because of what Megan went through in cyberbullying. This act was created to help define “cyberbullying” and let children, even parents know about Megan Meier’s story and have her incident unrepeated by another person. In conclusion, many incidents of cyberbullying have been reported and cyberbullying should be put to an end.

Imagine that every time you log into your Facebook account you look at your inbox hoping that each day will be different, only to find a plethora of messages filled with cruel insults, taunting, and name calling from classmates. “No one likes you!” “You’re an idiot!” How would that make you feel? One can reason that victims of cyberbullying should grow tougher skin and stand up to their attackers or stop visiting social networking sites all together as a response to bullying. It’s hard to sympathize with a victim of bullying if you’ve never been bullied or have always played the role of the bully. While I agree that cyberbullying should not be taken lightly, people need to understand that bullying, be it traditional or through social networking sites, can have long-lasting negative effects on its victims, it’s dangerous, and both types equally need to be taken more seriously.

Cyber bullying is quite different from the old traditional bullying. The traditional bullying has a combination of physical abuse, verbal abuse, and emotional abuse. While in cyber bullying it would just be emotional and verbal abuse because the person being bullied doesn’t get physically hurt. The traditional bullying would be face to face usually on school grounds during the school day, and it would have a smaller audience. Cyber bullying is at school and at home, all day, everyday either by the form of a text message, or chat room, or on social networking websites, and it has a large audience, for example if somebody posted on your wall on facebook everybody can see it and then people will comment and it will be a lot of people.
