Have you ever wondered why baseball became such a popular sport or how it began? The reason why baseball came to be started is because it originated before the Civil War as Rounders, a humble game played in sandlots. In rounders, the fielder put the batter out by hitting him with the ball unlike baseball which would have to have the fielder at a base to get an out by catching the ball from a throw. Other researchers say that baseball came to be by the game of stoolball. Stoolball was a game which would have a batter stand in front of a target, a stool, while another player pitched a ball. There were two leagues,the National(NL) and American(AL); the difference between the two of them was the Designated Hitter rule. The American League had this rule so the pitchers wouldn’t hit for themselves and if the AL played a NL team, the rule would only apply to the games in the AL ballparks and not for games played in NL ballparks. Some teams from the AL are the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners, and the Baltimore Orioles just to name a few. The teams from the NL include the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs, and Milwaukee Brewers. In each league, the two most successful teams would win the pennant. After the end of the regular season the two pennant winners met in the World Series; to determine the champion of that year, a team had to win at least four out of the seven games each team played. This rule is still regulated till this day but the leagues are now subdivided and pennants are decided in post-season playoff series between the winners of each division.
