Why Are Prisons Overused

In order for this trend to be stopped, prisons should focus more on how to reform criminals so that they can go back to their communities and do good for the people and not bring harm to those around them. Prisons should work to reform prisoners because most of them can be rehabilitated.

In society, there will always be people that take and steal and kill to collect what they feel they deserve. People that behave in such a way need to be separated from the citizens of society that are trustworthy, caring, and helpful in order to prevent the malicious citizens from taking advantage of their productive counterparts. There is no argument that individuals that break the law need to be punished so they know it is wrong. There are many types of punishment, but the one that contains the most people and best protects society from rampant crime is prison. While it is typically agreed upon that prisons are useful and even necessary, but what is typically argued is who should oversee the prisons. There are two main beliefs, the first is that the government should control the prisons to ensure prisoners are treated in the appropriate manner, public prisons. The second viewpoint is that prisons should be run by private companies, private prison, which will help cut costs, because storing inmates is quite expensive. Although each side has valid arguments, neither is largely ideal. Private prisons are not regulated enough and public prisons are too expensive, so the ideal prison is a combination of the two. Private prisons are the base that the ideal system must be molded from and it must be molded by creating several laws. Prison’s were established a long time ago to try to put an end to the rapidly increasing crime rate, however over time we are seeing the effectiveness of the most prisons decreasing. As a result of this epidemic, prisons have a higher recidivism rate and over 40 percents are currently operating over maximum capacity (Holder.) Through different types of research, we are finding out that our prison systems are no longer effective and there is a serious need for improvement. The United States has only 5 percent of the world’s population, yet we incarcerate almost ¼ of the worlds prisoners (Holder.)

Prisons are thought of as housing for criminals. This is the place where criminals are sent and become deprived of their freedoms while they serve a sentence for their crime. While this may be true, the original intent of prison was to rehabilitate the prisoners in order to prevent them from doing a repeat offense.

In the United States, many feel that prisons exist for punishment and not to counsel offenders. That may be true that Prisons are in use for punishment. They also have an important contribution to make by reducing repeat offenders by engaging them in rehabilitation programs and purposeful work. Society is wrong in its thinking that by putting criminals in a place away from society we would be better off. To make it worse studies show that more than 60 percent of Americans are against social reform because they have made up their mind that once a crook, always a crook.

There are well known documented issues that have been known to cause overcrowding in prisons. Some of these issues include poverty, lack of education or employment opportunities, drug or alcohol use and abuse, and mental

The prisons in America seem to cause more problems than assistance in today's society. The country's penal system is overcrowded, expensive, and some argue that is ineffective as well as inefficient. The costs to staff and support these facilities increase dramatically every year. Prisons, which are supposed to be correctional facilities, are currently filled with violence and hostility. These institutions are created to control crime by deterrence, incapacitating criminals, which protects society from potentially dangerous criminals, but it is hard to tell if this is being accomplished.

Today’s prisons do not effectively rehabilitate criminals, they are likely to reoffend and be incarcerated multiple times. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “At least 95% of inmates in the U.S. state prisons will return to their communities upon release, and more than 66% will be rearrested within three years.” (Beyer 2). The majority of prisoners who are in the same environment both before and after they were arrested continue to break the law. If jails and prisons focused more on rehabilitating criminals rather than only punishment, this number is likely to decrease. Prisons in the United states are overcrowded. This became a legal issue in 2011, when the Supreme Court required a reduction in California’s prison population by over 40,000 inmates. (Beyer 1). Cramming too many prisoners together does not benefit any party in the correctional system, and it is likely to cause more issues between prisoners. This also puts the safety of prison guards and correctional officers in jeopardy, because physical altercations between prisoners are more likely to occur. 676 per 100,000 people in the United States are imprisoned, which is the largest incarceration rate in the world. (Beyer 2). This number could decrease with a prison system that focused on a prisoner’s need as an individual. This includes education, job preparedness, and a plan for life

There are many people who are critical of the US‘s prison sysetm; the idea of locking up those who commit crimes against a society simply to keep them from doing harm. Since the begging of any form of judicial system there has been some way to hold those who break the law. Prisons have never been something that held a positive ideal, to most people they are dark, grey, and clinical. Differing opinions on how to treat prisoners have been around probably just as long as prisons themselves. However, because of recent increase in prison populations as well as the tightening of the laws, treatment of prisoners has gone from rehabbing them to just locking them down and leaving them there to rot. Not only do I think that rehabilitation is a vastly better system, treating them as cretins just makes them worse off than when they went in.

The nations prison system must be changed because of major problems with the system such as overcrowding and the fact that early release programs do not work. Building more jails is expensive and does not solve anything. These problems can be solved by giving prisoners no chance for parole
