It is common to idolize others. However, the majority of people go too far in trying to be like someone that they wish they were, losing sight of their individuality. Being accepted by society and following common trends as opposed to being unique is much easier to do because it is a way to avoid criticism. A person like McMurphy is a role model for people like Chief and myself because of the way he doesn’t care about what other people think of him. Once someone like Chief or myself takes their first steps out of society’s perception of normal, they never look back.

The underlying themes or principles of good and evil are fed to us at young ages, through stories,other means of media, or even our parents. Each and every one of us has a role model we look up to or admire as the hero in our metaphorical storybook of our life. Heroes are prevalent in everyone’s life. Whether someone’s hero is a living person or a fabled character from a movie, everybody has come into contact with some sort of hero. In fact, the concept of heroes has existed for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it. Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern day heroes have less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed differently than ancient heroes.

Do celebrities make bad role models? I believe they do. Kids see celebrities in the news everyday and mimic what they do, thinking that they should be like them. But that is wrong. Most celebrities don’t know what they are doing in their life because they have a hard time telling reality from fantasy. They are like you and me, but people think that they are more than that. Most magazines and movies have pictures/videos of airbrushed celebrities and when teenager look at these they start believing that looking like how celebrities do is the only way to be popular and loved.

When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.

If everybody was satisfied with himself there would be no heroes.” Mark Twain said it best when saying this, no one thinks of themselves as a hero. People are constantly looking up to other people. Having a hero is a good; it makes people strive to want to be more like their hero. It makes them want to strive for excellence, and be a better person. Having a hero helps make a person better. It makes that person want to have the same qualities as that hero.

For example, a role model who is a thief may cause a young person to believe that stealing is acceptable and tolerable, which it is not. Community role models definitely need to step up and take a more prevalent role in the lives youth.
