In the United States’ past, the elected Presidents have been blamed for many catastrophes. This includes hurricanes, the Gulf Oil Spill, the decline of the economy from sending jobs overseas and the greed of Wall Street, home foreclosures, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, on the island, Ralph is in charge of all of the boys. Even though there has been so much chaos since Ralph was voted leader, he is not solely responsible for the chaos that has occurred. The boys themselves are responsible for all the things they have committed. Though it’s true that everyone is technically responsible for their own actions, Ralph’s good leadership wasn't enough to prevent the turmoil that happened. This was shown when Simon was killed due to the fact that everyone became so crazy, they thought Simon was a beast. Then, the book said “Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea” (154). This shows Ralph has failed to prevent any tragedies from happening. But, this chaos wasn't Ralph’s entire fault. Ralph’s main goal was to help everyone get safely rescued from the island. “We decide things. But they don’t get done... Now there’s no water. The shells are dry. People drink from the river.” (79) Ralph actually cares about how civilized the boys are, as well as their health. He was one of the only ones that helped with the building of all of the huts they made. “Look at us! How many are we? And yet we can’t keep a fire going to make smoke. Don’t you understand? Can’t you see we ought to – ought to die before we let the fire out?” (81) Ralph is one of the only boys that realize how insane the rest become. He tries to tell the ones who’ve gone insane to change their ways, but they don’t listen, because they were all scared from what has happened, such as remembering the beastie, the snake, the fire, etc. Ralph never caused any of
