Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau were two more victims of the Zodiac killer. Ferrin died on July 5th, 1968 and Mageau was only injured. She did not die and later on she identified Arthur Leigh Allen as the Zodiac killer by looking at pictures the police showed her. “It was at this point that Mageau got a look at him. The man was white, 5’8′′ to 5’9′′, in his late 20s to early 30s, stocky build, round face, and brown hair” (“Confirmed Zodiac Killer Victims”).

The horrors in California began on Friday, December 20, 1968 in the city of Vallejo when sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen and seventeen-year-old David Faraday were killed while out on a date. At the time, according to Haugen (2011), they had driven to a remote lover’s lane on Lake Herman Road. It was while they were there that a vehicle stopped nearby and the driver got out, shot out the rear passenger window of David Faraday’s station wagon, and then shot the left rear tire. The man shot Faraday behind the left ear, while Betty Lou Jensen was running for the road. Unfortunately, she was unable to escape and was shot in the back five times by the assailant before he fled the scene.

On September 27, 1969, Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard were picnicking on the shores of Lake Berryessa, on a small island connected by a sand spit to Twin Oak Ridge. Zodiac, wearing a black executioner's type hood (but square on top like a paper bag) with clip-on sunglasses over the eyeholes and a biblike device on his chest that had a white 3"x3" version of his cross-circle symbol on it, approached them with a gun; Hartnell thought it was a .45. Yes it was, his intent to kill was connected by the actions he took by reporting his killings by phoning and mailing evidence of his murderous actions.The Zodiac’s killer also had enough presence in his mind to kill in hided areas, he also brought rope to tie his victims, a knife to stab the couple, a gun to kill his victims, all these actions showed intent.

The Zodiac Killer was an infamous murderer who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. He killed with zero remorse and even stated in one of his letters that “I like killing people because it’s so much fun” (“Zodiac Killer”). Between December 1968 and October 1969 had killed a total of five people and severely injured two others. He made his first appearance on December 20, 1968, when he shot and killed 17-year-old David Faraday and his 16-year-old girlfriend Betty Lou Jensen. The police were unable to determine the motive for the crime or a suspect. In Northern California the self-proclaimed Zodiac was connected to five murders from 1968 to 1969. Zodiac is also claimed to have been responsible for more deaths. The first murder to be confirmed was of Seventeen-year- old David Faraday and his girlfriend, sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen, on December 20, 1968. The zodiac killer is one of the most notorious serial killers of all time. He has killed somewhere between 23-38 people from the 1960’s to early in the 1970’s all of which were being done without leaving any clues behind. In the case of who was the Zodiac Killer, we have learned very little about what really happened to the Zodiac killer because of the fake names he would give himself, the coded messages he would send to cops, and the false information that was on these messages when and if they were solved.

The first murders widely attributed to the Zodiac Killer were the shootings of high school students Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday on December 20, 1968, on Lake Herman Road, just inside Benicia city limits. Shortly after 11:00 p.m. their bodies were found. Robert Graysmith postulated that another car pulled into the turnout, just prior to 11:00 pm and parked beside the couple. Jensen appeared to have exited the car first, yet when Faraday was halfway out, the killer apparently shot Faraday in the head. Fleeing from the killer, Jensen was gunned down twenty-eight feet from the car with five shots through her back. The killer then drove off.

With this attack, the Zodiac took a Paul Stein’s bloodied shirt, wallet, and car keys. The shirt was later sent to the police along with a letter in order to take credit for the kill. The Zodiac signed all his letters with a circle and a cross in the middle, therefore, his signature; with the third attack, he scratched it into the side of the door with the dates of his first two attacks with the knife he had used in the attack. This predator searched for couples either in their vehicle or outside their vehicle in remote areas either in the evening or early into the morning. The remote areas were within the Vallejo area, Twin Oak Ridge area, and an intersection in Presidio Heights. The murderer, who referred to himself as "the Zodiac," made contact with the police and area newspapers throughout his reign of terror through a series of menacing notes. Although the police were never able to apprehend Zodiac, they were able to gather information about him via the letters. Zodiac boasted of killing up to forty victims, however, police estimated he may have killed over 50.

Once again, he killed the female and failed to kill the male. It seems like he was intimidated by another man's power, maybe he was afraid to lose to a struggle. People say that killing women-for him-was the only intimate relationship he could have with one. The error was pointed out in the media that this serial killer seemed unable to kill the males. It was mysterious to people. This angered Zodiac enough for him to prove people wrong. Two weeks after his last attack, he shot a young male cab drive in the back of the head.
