Romeo and Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy caused by fate or by society? A play filled with many death's and quarrels, Romeo and Juliet, does not have a clear villain. The person at fault for these tragedies was alluded briefly to many different characters throughout the play. The topic of blame in the play causes many heated debates and controversy . Although many traits contribute to the tragedies showcased in the drama, in Shakespeare's story Romeo and Juliet, the characters Tybalt, Friar Laurence and Juliet contribute to the tragedy of the play because of their instigation, wishful thinking, and recklessness. Instigation between the characters shows responsibility for the tragedies that occur in the play due to the actions they make. Tybalt best personifies this trait. Tybalt is Juliet's hot headed cousin, who instigates many of the fights in the play. He has a certain loathing towards the character Romeo that causes more than one debacle throughout the story. Not once in the story does he voice his doubts that maybe the couple was moving too fast, or that they should rethink their decisions. Instead Friar Lawrence fills their heads with reassuring words and that their love was ‘written in the stars’. Friar Lawrence decided to marry the couple and tells the couple their marriage will fix everything between their families. "For this alliance may so happy prove To turn your households' rancor to pure love." (2.3.98-99). Friar Lawrence’s main reason for aiding the couple was so that their families feud would end.
