Hatchet by Gary Paulson Dynamic character: Brian Robeson Character trait: Self-Discipline October 30, 2015 Dear Mrs. Quinton, Brian Robeson a 13-year-old boy from New York is the main character of Hatchet by Gary Paulson. The reason Brian is making this plane trip to Canada is because his parents had recently become divorced. His parents’ splitting is the main cause of his instability. At first Brian shows us his fear, frustration and anger. By the end of his experience of being in the wilderness most of those characteristics had changed. Brian does not only learn lessons about survival in the wilderness but life in general. Brian transformed personalities; he is now patient and able to observe situations in a better way. Challenges
“I'm hungry and i'd trade everything I have for a hamburger.”(47) Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is an exciting story about a character named Brian Robeson who is left in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a hatchet and must survive until help comes. Hatchet supports my belief that hard work helps overcome obstacles.
Behavioral Goal: Robert will increase adaptive coping skills when presented with conflictual interactions with others.
In the book Hatchet, a thirteen year old named Brian, is stranded in the Canadian woods because his plane had crashed. Brian was in the woods for fifty-four days. In those fifty-four days, Brian learned how to survive on his own. In my opinion, Brian does what he can to survive on his own. In the following paragraphs, I will explain how Brian survives during his time in the Canadian woods.
Brian Robeson had many different skills, talents, and personality traits that contributed to his survival in the Canadian wilderness. A skill that Brian showed was that he was able to hunt, build things, and use his strength. One talent that he showed was that he was able to hold his breath for a long time. Two personality traits that he showed was that he is very smart and can remember things well. Brian is a 13 year old boy who was trapped in the Canadian wilderness. He used his skills, talents, and personality traits to help him survive.
First and foremost, the story “Hatchet” has a significant turning point. Brian was flying in a plane to meet his father in the oil fields of Northern Canada when the pilot had a heart attack. Because the pilot had a heart attack, Brian was forced to crash land the plane. Then Brian landed in the wilderness and has to survive with a 2 dimes, a quarter, 2 pennies, a nickel, a hatchet his mother gave him, and himself. Brian will have to make serious choices in order to survive this frantic turning point in “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. At first Brian thinks that he can't do anything and that he is weak, but later on in the story he figures out that he is his most important asset and that encourages him to survive this tragic event.
At the start of the book Brian is a typical city boy who takes most things in life for granted. After all the trauma he is forced to go through he sees everything differently.
A wise woman once said, Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me. This quote applies to Gary Paulsen’s novel Hatchet, for it has many elements of adapting. It speaks of Brian Robeson, a boy on his way to his father’s house, only to be lost to Canada’s wilderness due to a plane crash. As Brian faces the harsh obstacles of nature, it reveals that the importance of adapting is one of the main themes of this novel. Throughout the book, Brian encounters countless situations of difficulty, in which his only solution is to adapt and change for the better. As the author gets further into the novel, Brian shows his development t in adapting, when he replaces his pilot, changes his way of hearing and seeing, and gets to work after being hit
Hatchet is a breathtaking adventure novel written by Gary Paulsen. It is a survival adventure story set in the Canadian Wilderness. The isolation of the setting is extremely important to the plot as it is about Brian’s struggle for survival. He is alone, facing many challenges, with only his hatchet and his amazing determination and will to survive.
Through Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet, Brian, the main character, faces many tough situations, emotionally, and physically. Hatchet shows that even though, you go through many hardships in life, there are many good things to think about, which can help a person find out new
The novel by Gary Paulsen, “Hatchet”, shows the main character, Brian Robeson, tremendously growing mentally and physically throughout the story. This story shows the growth of a character from someone who can barely defend himself to another person who is strong and courageous. Brian definitely not only changed as a person, his perspective of everything changed. At the beginning of the novel, the best word to describe Brian’s personality or character is panicked.
Hatchet is a novel about a kid named Brian who’s pilot has a heart attack and crashes the plane. Using his mom’s gift ( a Hatchet), Brian learns to survive in the wild by making fires and getting wood. He survives and gets rescued. Overall, I think Hatchet can be used as a book to pass time about a boy who learns to survive in the wild.

Hatchet's survival story, then, is two-fold. Because stereotypically boys are less focused on the emotional aspect of things, and boys raised on G.I. Joes as opposed to a game of “house” are less interested in domesticity, the adventure trappings of Hatchet serve to mask what is really happening in the story.
