A Place to Belong

“Sometimes to get what you want the most, you have to do what you want the least” -Jodi Picoult. Lonely, sad, depressed, alone and isolated, we all have felt that way before. The character’s condition might be the most depressing state we can be in, being away from your family, friends and home. In The Arrival the author showed us how colors can be a universal language , they may express the message quietly but they convey it strongly. Shaun Tan did not only want us to empathize with the characters, but he also wanted us to understand the character’s emotions through facial expression and colors.

Shaun draws us into that time when we didn’t feel like we belong, so that we can truly understand what the characters really feel. He wanted us to feel how complicated it is to belong in a place where we don’t know anything or anyone. Shaun projected that moment in our life when we felt lonely and sad when we read The arrival. Shaun Tan might’ve had the idea to write The Arrival from his experience, from what I think Shaun or someone he knows, may have had an inconsolable memory of being isolated. He gave us that one piece that is missing in our heart, that says even when we are alone there are always people thinking about us. Tan opened a door to the characters’ life, for us to see. When entered that door it enlightened us, as to how the nameless man and the other immigrants lived in a very strange and bizarre place without being with their loved ones. He gave us a piece of information how you can live in that condition, and how we can communicate without knowing the language or anything about that extraordinary place. For us to truly acknowledge the character's situation and feeling, Tan showed us a very important way regarding how to express the characters’ emotions in
