Santiago's journey began long before he knew, with the help of his supernatural aid, his sheep. At this part of his journey, he will have the help of his guardians to cross the threshold.
A recurring dream has been taunting him, to go to the pyramids to find his treasure. With the help of a gypsy, he found himself at a fountain with a whole new perspective. An old man with questionable motives led to an even more questionable journeys and decisions,as his mentor he gives him both words to live by “whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it's because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. In the Alchemist Snatiago is symbolizing crossing the threshhold by crossing over the river into Africa, physically symbolizing not only the change in himslef but alsothe enviroment he decided to srround himself in. At this point he is scared, like many of us would,he is in a new place surround by new and strange people. They are simple like his sheep or the valleys of Andulasia. His challenges and temptations, the thief and the beautiful sword, leave him lost and without money. His only mentor is an Arab speaking owner of the bar. Santiago summarizes this with saying “when the sun had risen that morning, he was on another continent ...he had known everything that was going to happen to him as he walked through the familiar fields. Santiago finally has reached the pyramids only to find that his treasure was not there he is devastated, only until he is mobbed by a group of angry army deseters. One of the man tells santiago his dream of finding his treasure underneath a sycamore tree in a delapitated church, but he was not stupid to follow it. At that poin Santiago realized that his treasure was where he first had his dream. "You're not going to die. You'll live, and you'll learn that a man shouldn't be so stupid. Two years ago, right here on this spot, I had a recurrent dream, too. I dreamed that I should travel to the fields of Spain and look for a ruined church where shepherds and their sheep slept. In my dream, there was a sycamore growing out of the ruins of the sacristy, and I was told that, if I dug at the roots of the sycamore, I would find a hidden treasure. But I'm not so stupid as to cross an entire desert just because of a recurrent dream." And they disappeared. The boy stood up shakily, and looked once more at the Pyramids. They seemed to laugh at him, and he laughed back, his heart bursting with joy” At this point Santiago has realized that his journey is officially over and he has achieved his personal legend.
