The boys on the island in Lord of the Flies had two different leaders over the course of their time spent on the island, Ralph and Jack. Both of the twelve year old boys had some considerable leadership qualities but also made some bad choices during their time as leader. Ralph was a nice person who was favored over Jack in the beginning. Jack was awful person, but could lead a group of boys better than anyone on the island. He was able to get respect from all the boys at one point in the book. You can be a terrible person, but become a wonderful leader based on the way you lead.
Ralph was the first elected leader on the island. He was favored over Jack by the group of boys put on the island. He had some good leadership qualities. He created
A leader must possess leadership skills, whether good or evil. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph possesses three good leadership skills. Three leadership skills a leader needs to have is responsibility, determination, and initiative.
German journalist John Zenger once stated, “Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths”. When one is forced into a situation where a leader is necessary, a person that displays the fundamental attributes will successfully guide the society. Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island represent various aspects of leadership, characterized by differing strengths. However, the protagonist’s, Ralph, leadership undoubtedly triumph over the other boys because his attributes allow him to be a powerful leader on the island. Throughout William Golding’s novel, he clearly depicts Ralph as an effective leader through his desire for the survival of all of the boys, his adamant
In Williams Goldings novel Lord of the Flies, Jack and Ralph are the two main leaders in the island. Jack leading the hunters and the main leader of the island Ralph. Ralph and Jack have different ways and views on the island. Example would be their leadership style, goals, and their changing power in the island.
The book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding is about a group of students who are on a plane and crash on an unknown island. Ralph, throughout the book, demonstrates a better understanding of people than Jack, which gives him better leadership traits and makes him a good leader. Ralph was the best choice for a leader because of his good leadership qualities. Some of the boys on the island might have thought Jack, Simon, and Piggy might have been the best choice but they had some flaws to them.
“Ralph lifted the conch. ‘Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.’ ‘A chief! A chief!’.”(12), In William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph, whom may not be the strongest leadership candidate but is obviously the better, demonstrates a greater understanding of his fellow tribesmen than Jack, which gives him better leadership qualities. Ralph displays these useful human qualities as a leader by working towards the betterment of the makeshift tribe on the Island on which the boys live. He knows the boys need stability and order if they are to survive on the island alone so he creates rules and a simple form of government to achieve order. Jack, who is another leadership candidate, does not treat the boys with as much dignity and respect as Ralph does. Ralph understands that the boys, especially piggy, have to be given respect and must be treated as equals. This makes Ralph a better leader as he is able to acknowledge that he was not superior to any of the other boys, but as their equal. Ralph has the sense to keep his focus on getting off the island, he insists on keeping the fire burning as a distress signal to passing boats. Ralphs primary character trait of leadership is demonstrated in the people whom he associates himself, his physical attributes, and the symbols associated with him.
At the beginning of the book Ralph was one of the first characters introduced and by the time the first chapter is over its clearly known what type of leader he was going to be. He never liked conflict, but he stood up for what he thought was right. He made sure everyone was included, even Piggy, when making decisions or when he assigned jobs for the boys to do on the island.
When it comes to being a good leader, there are more things that go into it than one might think. Ralph and Jack, from William Goldng’s, Lord of the Flies, compare and contrast these qualities that one would need to be a great leader. Ralph and Jack, along with other boys, have been stranded on an island due to their plane crashing, There are no grown ups on the island, leaving the boys with a conundrum of a situation, and Ralph and Jack seem to be the only two boys to run for the position of leadership. It is seen that the boys like Raph more because of how he holds himself, and he is viewed as the “cooler” of the two, as he is the one who brought all the boys together in the first place using a conch shell. Jack is discerned more in a militaristic
In the story Lord of the Flies, a plane full of kids is shot down. The plane that was shot down could’ve been mistaken because it was during WWII. All the boys survive and end up with no adults on the island. This story uses symbols of characters as savagery, intellect, and leadership.
Ralph is a young boy with fair hair and a tall and skinny frame. He likes to swim and explore things, he is even a pretty good acrobat. He is mainly a very good boy, but nobody is perfect so he does have a little bit of a bad side. He is not a very fast thinker, but he knows what he wants and that is to be rescued. He is the leader of the boys on the Island and was a good one too.
A strong society is built through a good-hearted leadership, not through brute force. William Golding’s Lord of the Flies proves this statement true through the individual yet intertwining stories of Jack and Ralph. At some point during their adventure of being stranded without adults, both of these little boys gain a leadership role on the island, having some amount of control over the other boys. On numerous occasions, Ralph demonstrates good qualities that make him a kind and fair leader, and that also initially make him popular with the other boys. Jack is the opposite, seizing his power through force and violent means. Ralph’s good intentions and strong morales show that he is a better leader than Jack.
When the plane first crashes on the island Ralph is with Piggy. His leadership is shown from the start. Ralph's capability for leadership is evident from the beginning. He is the only elected leader of the boys. During the crisis
Ralph was the better choice for their leader because he believed in form and structure. He wanted the boys to work together so they could be rescued. Ralph attempted to get the boys to build a shelter, gather food, and operate other responsibilities for their survival, but none of the boys were motivated to do any work. In comparison, Jack just wanted to hunt and goof around on the island and ignored Ralph’s rules. Without Ralph’s leadership skills and regulations, the boys would not have survived during their time on the island.
Leadership is a powerful and highly valued trait; however, it is one that not all possess. Look closely at the characters in William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies. A good leader is one who knows how to lead with control and has strong leader characteristics. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, some readers support the fact that Jack was a better leader than Ralph, but others feel that Ralph was the better leader. Although many supporters feel that Ralph is the best leader, it is evident that Jack is the better leader because he can effortlessly control the group on the island.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
