John Proctor always seemed to be a well respected man in the Salem town.
But everything changed when Abigail sought revenge. John Proctor struggled the most with was keeping his household’s reputation. John Proctor’s wife was convicted of witchcraft because Abigail plotted a plan in order to get her lover back. One main thing John Proctor struggles with is keeping his families reputations under the shadows. When Abigail begins to accuse His wife of witchcraft. However John tarnished his name when he went into the court knowing he had little chance of winning over the court. He knew that the majority of the church was for the witchcraft trial, and that going to the court was a bad idea. He knew what he was getting into, he knew he would be condemned as a liar and tried if he did not win over the court.
The play’s theme about “One’s name” suggests that a character's names is very sacrait to one’s name. The theme talks about how in a Small town like Salem has so much conspiracies and theories roaming around the town, but the Salem town is so holy and observed that one’s name is so important to them that the townspeople often shy away from things that they consider to be “outrageous.”
Varieties of households don’t like the idea of tarnishing their household names. For example, John Proctor did not want the court pinning his name on the church doors.
His name was all he had to represent him. So One’s name means something to these characters, they don’t take these things lightly. In my opinion theme represents the characters, That things like “one's name” means something to them,
